If it kept it’s original infinite ammo concept then it would actually be a decent weapon, “infinite ammo? Where’d you get that from?” It’s simple, one of the pieces of concept art for the laser musket appears almost identical to the one we have in game, it also lost off what each part is, and when we look at the label for the crank we see “crank operated power generator.” So yes, the laser musket was, at a point in time that was close to the finalized implementation of the laser musket, intended to be powered entirely by the user instead of running on fusion cells. *If* history played out in the way where the laser musket did keep its infinite ammo mechanic, the laser musket would not only be a strong early game weapon, but also a force to be reckoned with late game with perk investment towards the weapon and high tech mods, it would also be a gun that would make perfect sense for the minute men’s lack of resources as once they built a laser musket they wouldn’t have to worry about supplying ammo for it as it generates its own, thusly a cheap yet effective weapon is made for a faction expected to be ready to help at a minutes notice.

When you look at the Minutemen, the first thing you say is 'these guys can barely fight some mole rats, how can they keep the Commonwealth together?' They send their own general on missions that could easily be done by some grunts. They are equipped with the shittiest equipment and guns in the entire game, and they don't have any power armor. That doesn't even make sense; the RAIDERS have power armor!

Sturges should’ve been recruited to be lead engineer for the Minutemen he’d of been more involved with defense making turrets, artillery, fixing up T-45s etc. a drill sergeant character coulda been useful for the areas you claim by killing the hostiles of that area so those areas would become Minutemen bases and training camps and would work differently than normal settlements. Then we needed a master of arms who also tinkers which would give you quests to retrieve basic gear and by doing so you’d either see that gear reflected on basic soldiers or see you get a new unique upgrade for something like the Laser Musket, Gauss Rifle or Revolutionary Sword. Obviously I could go on but I think these three hypothetical characters (and Sturges) would already fix whats lacking in the Minutemen faction gameplay wise

the minutemen are my favourite faction in fallout 4, i feel like the lack of lore and backstory to the minutemen are one of the things that makes it great (this is up for debate because i like the idea of a fleshed out backstory, but also the lack of one, its hard to describe). it gives you the feeling that you are physically building a faction from the ground up and allows you to focus on the future of the faction instead of its past with lack of leadership.
its also a shame that we didn't get many faction based quests like the brotherhood or railroad and only 2 named/functional characters.
there are a handful of mods that can help with the minutemen visually bot not necessarily gameplay wise, (militarised minutemen comes to mind)
another feature i would have liked would have been other factions actually recognised you as the general of the minutemen and not just as some ideological spoon, when i fist encounter the railroad and deacon said something like " boss, this is the general of the minutemen, the whole commonwealth is flying his colours " i was expecting the 2 factions to work together, but after that line of dialogue thats never mentioned again.
laser muskets are nice weapons but having them as the only weapon is a bit daft, the minutemen should have more of an arsenal of weapons like the brotherhood ( pistol, shotgun etc)
great video!!! the minutemen need some more love !!!!

  • @oolooo

Unlike most organizations (And despite their weaknesses such as vulnerability to fall apart without Leadership) , the Minutemen has insane growth and potential for empowerment due to actually being comprised of the population of the area instead of opressing them and lording over them such as Kaiser's Tribe and the NCR do to the Mojave or the Commonwealth Chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel .Their strength is the very people they protect , resources are essentially not a problem .Maybe standardization and formalization but that is another thing .
Also , I use mods to turn every settlement into a Castle (Massachusets will now be Nueva Castilla) and give every Minuteman a spiffy Uniform and badass guns .It feels good .

You're right and you should say it! All of this. MM have been my favorite faction, not only because they are the least problematic, but just because of what you can do with them. Also, I feel like the whole settlement system is built for them, hence why Preston is the one sending you out to find them and help them. I like things that I can build from the ground up and make my own, and you can do that with the MM more than any other faction. I think that they just get a bad rap because they don't have some of the same toys as the other factions. Also, I think your flag decided to split because you refused to admit to being a fan boy. Its ok. Embrace it. :)

I agree with everything you said in the video, except for the laser musket. I hate it.
I also hate how poorly written the Minutemen are as a faction by Bethesda. Reconquering Quincy whould have been lore friendly + an interesting ending for the Minutemen after destroying the Institute (and please don't mention the Gunners vs MM Creation Club Content, because it's a joke).
I think it would have been way more interesting if the Minutemen could retake the locations they lost in their way to Sanctuary too (Concord and Lexington settlements). And also if they gave you other quests related to rebuilding the Commonwealth but that aren't just ''a new settlement needs your help''. Like ''we found a boat that sank with some goodies that could help us rebuild this, let me mark it on your map'', or ''there's a crashed vertibird, go search for something useful'', etc.
This would have made the Minutemen way more interesting and less boring to play. I think the reason why most players dislike the Minutemen is because of how boring they are, not because they find them evil or whatever.

They are not endless, All you need to do is find out which settlement is the next in line that needs help yourself. Go there, they will tell you where to go and will give you the award and ends the mission whitout asking/telling Garvey. It happeds that there are always three missions given by Garvey in a line. Then find the three settlements yourself. If you solved those missions yourself, the Castle won't recieve any new missions. Took me a few years to find out though. Oh, and don't free the Minuteman untill you occupied all allready occupied settlements, those settlements will be the only ones choosen to get help from them.

  • @lunchbox997

The Minutemen are such an awesome faction/concept that I'm convinced there has to be some leftover things scrubbed from the creation kit that expanded the faction way beyond what it was meant to be. Bethesda clearly weren't committed to a completely custom independent faction, and didn't go all in when designing them which leaves the Minutemen to be the most desirable on the list of the pitiful factions in Fallout 4.
If they truly wanted to expand how customizable the faction is, they could have allowed us to customize the flag design, or what songs play on Radio Freedom, or allowed us to set a template for what generated Minutemen would wear, similar to the Grand Champion statue in Oblivion how it wears a generalized generated version of your player character because it is a NPC scaled up to 10x, that way it'd streamline the effect of having to equip every single settler in the commonwealth with that kind of equipment piece by bloody piece.
I think also the Radio Freedom could have been expanded to allow responding Minutemen to take your place in Radiant quests. The prerequisite would have to be you have to have a radio beacon or a radio tuned to Radio Freedom in the settlement, and based on the gear those settlers are equipped with and where they are in terms of distance to the troubled settlement determines if they fail or succeed, similar to their own defense system for settlements. They already designed this mechanic to a degree with Fallout Shelter.
I think also restoring the Castle should have been made a bigger deal, something you either did with more progress in the main story and sabatoge from the Institute + Gunners working together to try to stamp out the Minutemen one last time, similar to what happens when you get the Beryllium agitator and get banished from the Institute and have to defend the Castle. Just move that defense and combine it with the initial take over, because it doesn't make sense why Father would attack after the agitator was stolen, when he could have attacked sooner rather than later. The institute doesn't take risks when it comes to the outside, so they would have sent Kellogg and if not Kellogg then coursers from Justin Ayo in a similar style attack to the near end of the main story. While artillery is also a big threat to conventional enemies, it doesn't pose a threat to the institute which has teleportation technology, unmodded Arty is hit or miss, and outside of Nate/Nora controlling them, it's not used in any major assault in the plot. Maybe if there was some other technology that would have given the Institute reason enough to attack, like an indirect technology that would help the minutemen secure their lines at checkpoints or help escaped synths for the Railroad or tech to find the institute for the Brotherhood, then it'd make more sense.
Military Checkpoints should have also been mini-settlements, kinda like Boston Airport, where you are limited on what you can build and setup better defenses/cover in a small 30 meter square.
I agree that more named NPC's should have been in, like having to convince old holdouts like Ronnie that left before the collapse to rejoin, with Nate/Nora having to regain the trust over the course of 4 or 5 quests for these mini-minutemen factions to get them to reintegrate into the main faction, bolstering the ranks. (Maybe having a readiness mechanic like Mass Effect 3.)
Preston should have been more fleshed out, and his character lines needed to be less static, because when he's not acting like a quest giver, he's actually pretty damn interesting. I feel really bad for his Voice Actor because he has the range, it's just the direction they gave him made him be so robotic compared to Piper, Danse or even Nick who's a damn Gen 2 Synth.
There also doesn't seem to be much in the way of explaining how the Minutemen are able to organize after their defeat, sure we get settlements together and get to the point of getting the castle back, but it's not shown or explicitly stated why there's just "Minuteman and Minutewoman" who show up to storm the castle? Who are these guys, they weren't in Concord, how did Preston get in contact with them, unless Mama Murphey uses the sight to shapeshift and clone herself into a platoon. Maybe if we helped recruit some settlers from your existing settlements into the faction, like in Skyrim where you recruit specific followers into the Blades for Delphine. Then it'd feel like, damn it really is the whole commonwealth coming together to fix the wrongs of the world.
There should have been more "minutemen" weapons as well, like a Bayonet melee weapon that can get attached to the end of the musket, or even a Laser blunderbuss that's just an insane version of the splitter attachment, maybe a unique weapon or modification like the Junk Jet?
Anyways this is pretty long winded and after recently getting to 1100 hours in Fallout 4, I have to say that the Minutemen being the way they are in game is fine, I just have visions in my head of them being greater, and it could have been oh so sweet.

@@bebev281 I said, canonically, while acknowledging the gameplay is dumb.
The visuals of the gun do NOT line up with the mechanics. It uses fusion cells, despite there being no where to put the cell. You just crank crank crank crank crank, presumably using friction from the cranking mechanism to generate energy for the capacitor, that then will be fired out in a beam upon the triggers pull. If we go by visuals.
Due to the Minutemen as a faction being a poorly equipped militia, the price for a laser musket would realistically be outweighed by the lack of needing ammo.
TL;DR - I don't see fusion cells loaded into the gun, thusly I assume the ammo requirement was a stupid way to balance it.

I can definitely see where you are coming from with the whole freedom of choice angle to the Minutemen. True to Bethesda standards, they certainly needed to buff the foundation of the faction a bit more; your Quincy example was spot on to this. I think one of the reasons that some people don't like the Minutemen is because of Preston Garvey. He comes of as too idealistic and extremely naive to me and I wish that there was someone else in the initial group the PC rescues that could've served as a counterbalance to Preston by having a more realistic (or even pessimistic) world-view.
I also honestly don't understand why the Railroad is as popular as it is, as you pointed out; Ballistic Weave not withstanding. I'm not sure why they are even treated as a major story faction at all except when you consider who their enemy is in relation to the end of the game. At least the Brotherhood and the Institute (to a much lesser extent) offer a firmer foundation of beliefs and goals.

Finding out that Quincy was not a settlement with a workshop was such a huge let down for me. I spent hours scoping Quincy out for an attack and died several times trying to liberate it. But, it was all for nothing, the gunners just respawn and there is nothing that can be done about it.
I actually questioned my own sanity because surely Quincy had to mean something to Garvey and Jun and Marcy, but not even a single line of dialog from them about administrative punishment of Clint at Quincy.

Quincy Massacre, bad business that. I think the CC content from the CR-74L creation does great to expand some of the lore behind Quincy. Other survivors not connected to Preston, etc. But the Gunners vs Minutemen creation kinda messes with established game lore for the area. Still a great couple of creations. Planning to use them both on my next Minuteman playthrough, make the CR-74 the standard issue rifle and have PA with the new paintjobs in each settlement

The one dislike I disagree with is gear progression.
I see this as a common complaint from Fallout 4 creators and community but I think it has 2 advantages in terms of story telling.
1: You are the general, the highest rank in the organization, it makes sense you have the best gear and atleast early on the only way to have better gear than them while still having weapons is pipe weapons.
2: The bigger reason for me is what that lack of kit signifies. Inorder to join the minutemen you don't need fancy power armor or creature melting weaponry. To join the group who's whole goal is to fight for safe places to live and making a better world for everybody all you need is some courage and a firearm you cobbled together from a few scrap materials you can find all over the place.
Combine that with the mechanics of the flare gun and later artillery and you start to see a defensive wall begin to from, where neighboring settlements provide artillery support and reinforcements in your time of need and in exchange you do the same for your fellow settlements, each new outpost links into the line providing new locations and thus new angles for artillery to land from and reinforcements to arrive from, giving the potential to hit raiders from the wrong side of their cover, it also provides new safe places to run too if you happen to get introuble while away from your home settlement.

people seem to hate the minutemen because they're "weak" and "stupid" and "preston is annoying."
gee it's almost like being a GENERAL requires to do things. it's almost like you need to LEAD the minutemen because you are the GENERAL.

  • @aaronburdon221
    @aaronburdon221 Місяць тому

I love the minutemen, BUT if you're gonna make me a general, at least let me delegate tasks to my underlings. For example, if a settlement is under attack, you can show a roster of your people in the town you're in and you can send them to help combat the threat. You can calculate odds based on their personal attack strength (calculated by the DPS strength of their gun). That way your settlements being able to defend themselves isn't simply a roll of the dice and once you gain enough support across the commonwealth, you can attack the institute, BoS, or Railroad (these settlements will have an extremely high defense rating so it'd REQUIRE more settlements to be on your side to be able to counteract the odds). Also, you should be able to issue promotions to people (with battle experience) and certain promotions allow them to take on certain battle command situations. For example, a Lieutenant can only interdict when a settlement is under attack (e.g. lead a defense force due to orders from you). A captain can perform small quests like the rescue missions and clearance missions, A colonel can take over and govern settlements. Of course, only you, the general can order/lead an attack upon the headquarters of another faction.

The problem with the vanilla Minutemen is that they are actually weaker than ordinary citizens, ordinary settlers make far better Minutemen. However, the most devastating weapon in the game in not the mini-nuke, but the Minutemen artillery barrage. The default Minutemen need to be brought up to the strength of ordinary citizens or level-up with the player. When you are promoted to General you should be the player issuing the orders and not Preston this is where Bethesda went wrong, the secret of real power is not to do but to delegate.

The minutemen are pointless, you can go the entire game without interacting with them at all, and everything that you can do with settlements you can do without the minutemen , the only thing you miss out on is basically the artillery, some parts of the castle settlement & Preston . They are there basically as a failsafe, if you screw things up with the other factions. You can get EVERY settlement w/out them
I feel like the minutemen shouldn’t be available soo early in the game, you could have had cods worth be the one to teach you about settlement building. And once you complete the main game Preston SHOULD loose his essential flag.

On my evil playthrough i actually sided with the minutemen, i took great joy in taking this idealist moral beacon of the wasteland and turning them into a crazed band of slavers.
Sanctuary became the ture ironic beacon of this civilisation being named Sanctuary yet teeming with slaves. Starlight Drive in became my coliseum, feeding gunner scum to my pet deathclaw "Cupcake" as revenge for the minutemen of old.
There were times this character was worse than the Caesar to the west. The ghoul question for example, where as the legion of Vegas merely butchers ghouls, i asked the question "who turns down an immortal slave?".
The game real does allow complete creative freedom, throw in some mods (lets be honest who doesn't) and the results are amazing.
I also torched Nuka World, not because of any moral reason have you read the things i did, they were competition and we cant allow that.
