Skills and vision wise, Melo was CLEARLY the BEST on the COURT. He was basically going at about 40%. Once he becomes more COMFORTABLE, U will see how FAR SUPERIOR he is to the COMPETITION.

I want to show everyone watching this something. This is why scouts are torn on Melo Ball. Pause your video at 20:06. You see Spire take a shot and the black team gets the rebound and pushes the ball, Spire gets back on defense. Again, stop the video at 20:13 and you will see four players from Spire back on defense, where is Melo? He has not even crossed half court yet, he is cherry picking. A full seven seconds later, Melo is asking his team to play 5-4 so he can be lazy. No high level coach will accept this. The black team misses its shot and Spire pushes the ball downcourt to Melo who of course is wide open. He makes a nice razzle dazzle play that will be on every highlight. When you watch the highlight package all you will see is the between the legs pass, not the ten seconds before that where his team gave up an easy layup attempt because he never got back on defense. Lots of talent there but without the desire to play both ends Melo will never make it to the next level.

I have mixed opinions on Melo in this game. For one, this is the first time since his freshman year where the whole gameplan is not getting him the ball and getting him his points. He is not really forcing things too much. He is not the primary ball handler which I find a little bit odd, he likely should be. He makes some nice passes. He is trying to fit into the offense and not force his way into the offense. With that said, I dont feel like when I watch him that I am watching an NBA player. I dont feel like I am watching something or someone who is going to be great. He is still terrible on the defensive end. Look at the play starting at 7:02. He has zero defensive awareness on that play. I also saw him gamble for a steal and miss badly, giving up a wide open 3 in the corner. On top of that, he doesnt look to be asserting himself to his fullest. Its still early, only the second game but if he thinks he is a top player in his class he needs to show more than this.

First off this is a scrimmage game it doesn’t count so most players don’t play to their full potential , it’s like this , why waste energy on a game that doesn’t count knowing you have at the most 3 more games in the same week plus school all week , why exhaust myself , plus with the addition of it being the beginning of the season no one is in full shape to even play a full game yet nonstop so the kids need all the energy they can get , another thing is he is in a different system from chino hills , he’s not the primary ball handler because his coach feels like that isn’t his best roll for the success of the team , he is also way taller than his freshman year and in high school a kid with length is a gift so he’s kinda a small forward for this team .
