      @moz zo I've heard some people say "That's what the creative team is there for" Kinda just saying that they should be at their A game every single issue. creating Five Star villain's. And Besides , having Batman not kill can be rather interesting for when you want to have somebody that has the Ideological Difference, or...I dunno......uh...someone who kills yet impersonates batman? I...I'm not creative enough to get more Ideas than that.

      @moz zo At this point, DC has been milking Batman and Joker way too much, imo.
      Does anyone actually enjoy Joker comics at this point? Joker never has any consequences. He always escapes from every situation and even if he gets thrown in Arkham, you can be sure he'll be back in a couple of arcs. The most Batman is willing to do to him is either punch him really hard or try and appeal to his obviously non-existant humanity.
      Joker is walking plot armor att his point and he's only bringing down the other comics.

      @moz zo " Like I'm tired if seeing the vigilante who kills go up against batman."
      I can agree with that. It does get rather Bland after a while. Some of them can be interesting, like the...crap, forgot the name...The uh, the kid going after Joker's guys. And I guess Ghostmaker is something I'd like to see continue, but it does get tiring seeing "Well Batman, you don't kill people so I will, Including You!!!" and if the Vigilante is Popular enough, they may be brought back. Which is what's noce about Batman's No Kill Rule. It's far easier to bring back Bad Guys.
      It would be incredibly hard to just continuously write new bad guys Over and Over again, and I wouldn't be surprised if they just ran out of Ideas and Batman ended up just failing as a comic book series.

    The problem with murdering criminals as a vigilante is already seen here. Clownhunter hunts the murderous clowns and gunning after Harley. However, this still makes him a wanted murderer and thus a target for Ghostmaker. Basically, you become the target for someone else like you.
    There's a danger with playing judge, jury and executioner.

      Though there is truth to that, the main issue with why Ghostmaker is going after Clownhunker is that he is putting other lives at risk by attempting to blow up a building. (putting other lives at risk). at it is clear that Clownhunter is acting purely out of vengeance and the personal desire to kill, not out a moral obligation to stop crime. That being said murder is murder, it is wrong. this is why Batman does not cross that line. Killing a killer still makes the person a killer themselves.

    The issue Rob and the "you're a half measure" people never want to acknowledge is that it really is a slippery slope. I get that's not what you want to hear, but it's still the truth.
    If Batman kills the Joker, killing is now "on the table" when dealing with criminals. If it's "on the table" what determines who gets axed and who doesn't? Does the Riddler get to live because he doesn't fill _as many_ graveyards as Joker? What about Harley Quinn or Poison Ivy? Both have their own graveyards full of people. Are their sins retroactively brought forth or are they ignored "just because"?
    I mean, look at what's happening right now. What makes Clownhunter and Ghostmaker demonstrably different? Both think killing criminals is fine. Both feel they are making Gotham a better place *by* killing.
    Only problem? Ghostmaker is bigger and stronger than Clownmaker and sees his actions as criminal. Now, with that "You take a life, you die" attitude, two people with the exact same viewpoint are pitted against each other because said viewpoint is so definitively destructive.
    That's what happens when you say "killing is required and no killing is lazy".

    • @RhoneM
      @RhoneM 4 роки тому +19

      The difference between the two is that Clownhunter seems to not care for the collateral damage. He was about to build a home made rocket launcher to take out Harley with no real forethought to the surrounding civilians. Ghostmaker on the other hand seems to have fine tuned himself to be Bruce's better, to take down and kill solely the criminal in question. Difference in approach and philosophical outlook.

    I still find the argument Rob is making kinda flimsy.
    No, he’s not wrong that the justice system is screwed up, and that it’s getting people killed, but I’m still against the idea of telling Batman to kill people NOT because of t slippery slope “he’ll keep killing” argument, but because I don’t like the idea of a single point of failure.
    For clarity:
    While the justice system is still kinda flawed in practice, it fundamentally relies on people coming to a conclusion as a collective, meaning that there is a system of checks and balances to make sure people are not convicted via bias.
    Sure, nowadays it’s more a game of who can craft the most convincing argument, however I still point to the fact that if Batman’s rogues gallery keep getting thrown in jail instead of getting the death penalty, that’s kinda the fault of the jury, since it’s society deciding to spare their lives.
    While I agree that, in reality, people like the Joker should be sentenced to death, I heavily disagree with the idea that ONE MAN should have the power to make that choice.
    After all, Batman’s not a king, why should he have that kind of power?

      To add to this. The slippery slope concept doesn't solely effect batman. Others will be influenced by his actions. "Well if batman says it's ok, then I can do it just this one time." Then it escalades from there with other superheros

    • @justsomeguywithabeardx
      @justsomeguywithabeardx 4 роки тому +11

      I don't agree with you. The whole concept of Batman is to work outside the law and do what must be done. Otherwise, there's no point to Batman. Bruce Wayne could've become a police officer or a FBI agent if he wanted to work within the constraints of law and that would've ensured that people like Riddler and Joker wouldn't have appeared too.
      Why is Batman fighting crime? He isn't a police officer, military personnel or anyone hired by any person in a position of authority. Why does Batman get to pick and choose which part of the law he gets to break and then expect to be seen a s a good guy?
      The whole point of Batman is that the system cannot be trusted to ensure that justice is carried out. Joker is the prime example of this. Just because a person with mental disabilities cannot be given the death penalty, a well known psychopath is allowed to use what amounts to a revolving door, while leaving a horde of dead bodies in his wake.
      Even if Batman won't carry out the death sentence, there are plenty of other people more than willing to do it. Jason Todd, for one. Don't stop Jason from killing the Joker. Don't push Batman's skewed morality onto Jason. But no, even that's too far for Batman.

    I feel like every single Batman video on this channel at this point includes a lecture of why Batman is bad because he doesn't kill his villains. To be fair, that seems to be the same question his writers are asking over the recent story arcs.
    It'd be nice to see this storyline actually go somewhere instead of just posing the same question over and over and ending in the same place.

    • @kurtlindner

Because in the 3 Jokers story they made Jason out to be the bad guy out of Barbara and Bruce cause he wanted to kill Joker and killed one of them. But the argument Rob made here has been Jason’s argument before, and just like Rob said he’s right. I’d almost go so far as to say I would be in favor of Red Hood and GhostMaker teaming up.

Has hard as it is to say Batman is good at defending his city, time and time again he allows his villains to be put in Arkham just to breakout after a while and cause more mayhem

    I don't think I've ever heard anyone quite literally not get Batman more then Rob here. Like, I don't know if it's necessarily because he doesn't understand or isn't interested in the more psychological themes of these stories as well as exploring the sort of moral divide that exists inside these characters or not but... I think the reason Batman doesn't kill as a rule is kind of obvious, especially when put alongside characters that do. You can say "The slippery slope doesn't exist" all you want, but evidently in Batman, it most certainly does. Many characters, even when trying to redeem themselves slip into their old ways because they're easier, including characters like the Red Hood and Damian Wayne. They often try to stay above it, but both often find themselves slipping.
    Sure, Batman COULD theoretically just kill one person and have the willpower to resist killing more... But would he risk it? Would he risk making that mistake? That's literally the Joker's main plan in multiple instances, as soon as Batman kills him, that means he's won. Not to mention, we've certainly seen other universes where their Batman DOES kill, we know he would fall.
    Aside from that, Batman also believes in second chances to an almost unhealthy degree. He would rather spend time, money, resources, and risk his own life to help criminals reform their lives and possibly be rehabilitated into the world as honest members of society then let a single one of his rogues gallery die. He wants to help them, not throw them away. Hell, when criminals do try and reform, Wayne Enterprises is almost always the first to reach out and say they have a job waiting for them.

    That repetitive argument of "if batman doesn't kill the joker knowing the joker is a killer, isn't he worse than the joker" holds absolutely no weight to me. Gotham has a justice system that has the possibility of prison or the death penalty. Once batman gets someone to the propper authorities what happens next isn't on him. Its on the justice system that decided to put him in an insance asylum, or decided against the death penalty. Its different for someone like superman who on many occasions is the only one who has a chance to stop some of the villains he faces. In those cases those villains are omega or beyone and your typical cell can't hold them, nor can your average hero stop them. But for batmans human level threats, the justice system failed gotham not him. He's a vigilante with his own code true, but he does on many occasions maybe even most work with gcpd and never once did he agree to be their executioner, that job belongs to someone else.

  • @tonyolo4591
    @tonyolo4591 4 роки тому +4

    batman is a criminal, and he's aware of that fact.
    I think that's why he refuses to kill. it's his own personal law. he knows if he doesn't abide by some kind of law he's no different from "them". he has to break the law routinely in order to catch the bad guy, so he makes sure not to break the law that created him.
    basically he became a criminal to stop murder, so of course he's not gonna engage in it.
