Great. My Killick, Gatland, Bryant, Rose, Church etc extended families all lived in and around Warlingham before the Great War.

Thanks for this Phil. Two questions about the war memorials on The Green - did the soldier on the memorial plinth ever have a bayonet? There is an old story that it did have one but this was broken off, not sure how or when. Second question - what was the field gun and when did it vanish? I'd guess in a scrap run in WWII - it looks like an 75mm Model 1897 field gun but WWI is not my area of expertise.

Hi, I couldn't find anything to suggest there was a bayonet on the gun. My thought is that if it did it would easily get broken off as you say, so I wonder if they excluded it from the outset? It was designed by J E Taylerson but I doubt if any drawings remain - the early photos I have seen don't make it clear. I have one in the Warlingham Bourne Society Village Histories book of the unveiling ceremony, and taking the flag off it may have caused an issue if there was one - so that may answer the question! The same book refers to the Howitzer gun that was positioned there on 10/01/1920 by the 17th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, they had captured it at Cambrai, which was 1917. You are correct! It was given up for salvage at the start of WWII.

I can just about remember the Green when it wasn't one way. Any idea when it changed?
Great work lining those old photos up with now.
    Thanks for this.

It might be a challenge but possible if old photos are around that show landmarks that are also recognisable today. I’ve not seen that many old photos from this area but there must be some out there!

Do you think you would possibly be able to do this with Shirley? There are a ton of old photos on the internet.

Possibly, yes. As long as I don’t breach any copyright or get permission to use them with credit given then I’d be happy to.
