Leslie Nielsen was asked why the movie was a hit, but the tv series failed. He was very candid that it was a different medium. When you go in a theatre you pay attention, but not tv. You wander around and might pay attention, or play with the kids, dog, or wifey. So kudos to those involved for truly believing in what they had created. Lucky us.

Great reaction Dawn. The 'In Color' reference is a throwback to a time when the majority of TV networks and people only had black and white TV equipment. Colour was mentioned to let people know that their favorite shows were in colour and maybe they would wish to upgrade to an expensive colour TV set.
I remember as a child my parents renting, yes renting, a colour TV (very few people could afford to buy a colour TV) to watch Princess Anne's wedding in 1973. Damn I feel old now!

Except the joke was this: by this time, no shows said “in color”, as by the 80s most people had color. It was ridiculous to market it that way, hence the joke.

Hi Dawn Marie, this has probably been mentioned before, but in case it hasn't, one of the reasons it was so funny to see Leslie Nielsen do these comedies is because he - and the other older male characters in Airplane! - had only ever been cast in serious roles, as "heavies". Airplane cast them completely against their type, and while the writing was great and made things very funny, the fact that they were acting SO differently than their prior acting history made it twice as funny. Leslie Nielsen, of course, built a whole second career doing this "straight-man comedy" routine, which was great, but you really should watch him in something prior to his comedy roles. And as such, I'm recommending that you watch Forbidden Planet (1956), which was Leslie Nielsen's first leading role. This was a 50s Sci-Fi movie, but it has an amazing story (based on concepts from Shakespeare's The Tempest) and surprisingly good special effects for its time. It's family-friendly - no gore or blood - and Disney animators actually worked on parts of the movie, which will be obvious when you see it. There's even a love story. I'm sure you'll like it, and you'll be shocked and pleased to see a young Leslie Nielsen as the captain of the space ship.

As if I couldn't love your channel as much as I do.... you reacted to 'Police Squad!', easily one of My favorite shows when I was a young teen. The show's brief run was like shooting star - if you saw it, it was zany goodness and if you missed it, you felt left out when your friends talked about the episode (and I did make friends who missed it feel like they missed out on greatness lolol). Having seen 'Airplane' and 'Kentucky Fried Movie' already, I was expecting the same from the show and it didn't disappoint. Your laughter and enjoyment reminded Me of Me watching each show for the first time. Thank you so much for watching this short but amazing series!

Awesome!! The "In Color" during the show beginning title is a reference to the TV shows of the 1960s & 1970s when television was transitioning from BLACK & WHITE programs to COLOR. When those shows started to become colorized, they had the same thing on their title screens as well, such as: "The Rat Patrol, In Color". About the mid-1970s or so was when television stopped adding the "In Color" to show title screens.

What a lovely surprise to see you watch these 😊 It's like the Monty Python TV series, they're hugely famous but it's so rare for someone to react to them, so this is delightful! I loved this little world so much when they were on BBC2, even more so then the movies. Plus their unique uses of the TV format like the freeze frame, ep titles etc. Thanks for doing them!
Little bit of trivia, there was a British ad (for Red Rock beer?) that was on TV in the late nineties I think, starring Nielsen, using a bunch of famous jokes from the show you'll recognize. Should be easy to find 😊

The "in color" line was another joke. This series was a satire of a famous cop drama from the early-mid 60's called "Dragnet". The first couple seasons were in black and white like all other TV series. Then they switched to color. And the mid 60's TV show intros would always include the words "in color" because color tv was a novelty back then

I love how the guest star is killed off in the opening sequence. Classic!
Back in the later 1960's TV shows were mostly in black and white and a few were in color. The "In Color" line was to draw attention to that fact with the hope of people buying more color television sets. Also, the voice-over "In color" guy was the same guy who said the line way back when and came out of retirement to do the line one more time.

    • @CommissionerSleer
      @CommissionerSleer 6 місяців тому +8

In the 60s and 70s, I think the main reason was for TV listings: people with colour sets would read the show was in colour so more inclined to watch it (to watch that channel) and get the most out of their sets.
I don't think channels and produces would generally care too much about TV sales but people shifting to colour sets when their channel has colour TV cameras and editing... that's a shift that benefits the channel over less advanced competitors so it makes sense for them to also want and encourage more colour TV sets. I dare say we've seen a similar thing with HD.
It was just a little joke in Police Squad. That nobody was doing that anymore and hadn't for years. Every show was in colour by the 80s and almost everyone had colour sets.

The show was cancelled because "The powers that be" said you had to watch the show! No joking there! What they were wanting was some comedy show that you could have on in the background, or start watching partway through and not feel as though you'd lost something.

The cynic in me also wonders if they didn't want to set a standard they couldn't maintain. They didn't want audiences getting actually funny comedy or they'd come to expect other comedies to be funny.
Cheers, MASH, Mork and Mindy... they were funny. Certainly popular but I always felt very formulaic and predictable. Zuckers and Abrahams' style is a complete departure from that and I can easily believe the average US couch potato might not get it when they're used to the other stuff.

8:19 The line he said was “I am not an animal, I am a human being.” It was a reference to the movie The Elephant Man(1980); it starred Sir Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt.

The reason why it says, "In Color" was because in the '60s, most TVs were black and white, and most programs were shot in black and white. So if you had a color TV set, you wanted your programs in color (and TV manufacturers wanted to sell color TV sets). When Police Squad came out, all TV programs were in color, so it wasn't a selling point anymore and nobody said it, but most people still remembered programs with that "in Color" in the opening credits.
By the way, the narrator saying who the stars and guest stars are was a tribute to (parody of) shows by a particular producer, Quinn Martin who had most of the series he produced with opening credits done that way.
Also the boxer who starts a poem only to end it with, "I'm gonna break your face," is a parody of the famous boxing champ, Muhammad Ali, who would make up poems for self-promotion like, "Float like a butterfly; Sting like a bee; My first name's Muhammed; And the last is Ali."

I love how you are just being you in your videos Dawn. There is no acting for the camera or viewer. You're so real and down to earth and that's what makes you so loveable along with your smile and laugh. No matter what you are watching you can turn it into a humourous situation and that says what a wonderful person you are. I hope you never stop doing videos because you bring so much joy and laughter to so many people. Thank you!! Btw... love what you done to your hair!!
