  • When I buy antiques I often wonder how they were made and if anyone has the skill these days to recreate them...and if they do, how much would that cost ?
In this video I take an antique coopered jug umbrella stand, around 120 years old to show one of England’s last Master Coopers Alastair Simms and ask him how much it would cost to make a new version and for him to show us what’s involved in the making...in other words...How To Make A Barrel!
With thanks to Alastair Simms and Jensen’s Cooperage in Ripon, North Yorkshire
See the antique stick stand here www.david-harp...
Do you have any interesting antiques for me to feature here on my channel? What about interesting antiques or art you want to sell?…let me know and if I can make an informative, entertaining video on the subject, I’d love to get involved…get on touch!

@@DavidHarperAntiquesTV I absolutely loved it. So much so, I'm attempting to cooper a small tankard from birch to start. Then move up to a few gallon barrel for my wine.

In this age of buy cheap and chuck away to landfill, plastic everything and planned obsolescence, it was so refreshing to see a Master craftsman using skills - handed down and copied over thousands of years. Dump the media studies and graphic design courses at Colleges and Unis and lets promote apprenticeships in worthwhile skills such as this, that are as relevant today, in an environmental sense, as they’ve ever been.
