  • In today's video we add a passenger train to my existing roster. Where will it depart from and how will the already busy mainline cope?

Take a look at the Walther's Doodlebug. I think it comes out to about 60' long, and is a combine for baggage and passengers. The Bachmann Spectrum is a bit too long for your needs. There may be a shorter gas-electric doodlebug out there as well.

Yes I see the shorter doodlebug. Great tip. And the front truck is close to the body edge so less overhang in the curves. Wikipedia speaks of "55-foot long or 70-foot long units".

Hi! Interesting video. I live in Nebraska and small town passenger service was a problem for the real railroads also especially as the automobile started being the preferred way to travel. The course of action was 1) reduce or eliminate service to many branchline towns, or2) change over to a motor car (like your RDC) or 3) use a "mixed train". The mixed train did operate one or two passenger or express cars with a freight train. These were common on the Union Pacific, the Burlington and others. The UP used a 60 - 65ft combine car that carried express, a few passengers, and had space for the train's conductor. The combine acted as a caboose for the train as well as handling a limited number of passengers, mail and express shipments. Near the end of branchline service the combine car was replaced by having the few passengers ride in the caboose. Some railroads modified some cabooses by adding a side door (for express shipments and milk pick ups). So, you can add a side-door caboose to serve a few passengers or you can add a 60' combine. The operations challenge is to spot the combine off the mainline as switching would hinder loading and unloading plus the passengers would find the jolting to be annoying. So the combine or modified caboose needs to be spotted at the passenger depot before the freight cars are switched. A combine would probably need to be turned but a caboose might not. That give your towns some passenger and express service without having to use a "proper" passenger train.

Interesting comment! That makes a lot of sense. I never realized that the mix freight is (can be) a result of reduced passenger demand.

Shown very well. I think it's nice that you pay attention to the appearance of the length of the wagons. I also don't think it's nice when the much too long wagons drive around such tight radii. Greetings Tino

Hi Tino. Everyone to it's own liking! But yes we are in agreement. ;-P It is also one of the reasons why I chose for this time period, because the cars were not all 60 to 80ft. If I wanted to model modern times the track plan would be very different than what I have now.

make long caboose that due around as passager and end car like one use branch line
like video detail as great understanding with the operation on your layout

I have been looking for a short passenger coach for years. I agree the 60+ coaches look stupid going around tight curves. I have not found anything short in n scale.

Its a tricky balance. The 35ft overland coaches just look too old-fashioned.

I can't say too much more than what has already been said. Railbus service could be an option. Another possibility is modify something to fit your railroad. Real railroads did that too.

Thanks for the tip. My mind was wondering on that direction. I found that there were very few american railbuses. The real characteristic and small railbuses where european. So i was thinking to get one and convert it for use un america. I.e. knuckle couplers and chop off the buffer.
As an intermediate solution, i have found a few 50' converted box car troop cars.

@@DubaiTrains troop cars can be a great idea. They were used into the 70s in some cases. Is there much railroad action in the Emirates?

We are building a railroad as we speak. The first phase is finished carrying mostly sulfur and now we are expanding geografically and into intermodal and passengers.
Apparently back in the day Aramco bought a few budd rail cars. I have never seen them but how cool would it be to find those!
