- The Chop technique is a dynamic and innovative rhythmic bowing method that has revolutionized the role of string players in modern music. It involves creating percussive and rhythmic sounds by using the bow in a distinct manner on the strings of stringed instruments like violins, violas, and cellos. This technique allows string players to contribute to the rhythm section of a band or ensemble, adding groove and depth to the music.
In this tutorial, Eduardo Bortolotti takes you through the fundamentals. Learn about grip, angle, and bow placement as you venture into the rhythm-rich territory.

Thank u so much for sharing your knowledge, you have a lovely smile
The best explanation I’ve come across yet! I’m a professional classical player looking to expand my horizons in the pop world.
It’s this supposed to be so pinky intensive though?? The tip of my 4th finger (right hand) is killing me trying to do this!!
This is the best video about chopping. I have watched several videos about chopping. None of them explains or shows the step by step process like this one. I have never chopped before. Thank you. With this video I believe I will chop.
Many thanks! Appreciate your positive message!
Thanks for the great lesson and demonstration!
Thank you for your feeback!
physics of sound is fascinating. Going out of the violin's normal singing voice feels enlightening.

This is a fantastic video, I’m a professional violinist (my sister is a cellist, both classically trained) and I’ve been looking for a video for the longest time to teach me the chop but have never found such a well set up lesson on it with all the details needed. I will be practicing with this video a lot and looking forward to getting better at this and adding it to my compositions. You’re a wonderful teacher and performer, thank you!
Great lesson! Thank you very much! 👏👏👏
