White heron on the hunt / Birdwatching

Chepuura veliyka, or great white heron (Ardea alba) is a large wetland bird of the heron family, common in warm temperate and tropical latitudes of both the Western and Eastern hemispheres. On the territory of Ukraine, it is nesting, migratory, and partly wintering.
A large bird, 94-104 cm tall and with a wingspan of 131-145 cm. The weight of adult birds is about 912-1140 g. As a rule, males are slightly larger than females. The plumage is completely white. The beak is long, straight, yellow. Paws and fingers are long, dark gray. The neck is long, S-shaped. The sixth cervical vertebra is somewhat elongated and built in such a way that the bird is able to quickly extend the neck or, on the contrary, pull it into itself. The tail is short, wedge-shaped. After the autumn molt, males and females grow long white feathers on the upper part of the body from the shoulders, sticking out from the sides and behind the tail. During the breeding season, these feathers are compressed and flattened, showing needle-like extensions behind the tail. At this time, the beak acquires an orange-yellow shade with a dark ending, and the bridle turns green. The bangs on the head, which are found in other types of herons, are absent in the great white heron. Sexual dimorphism is not expressed.
Chepura is widespread in warm temperate and tropical latitudes of Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
