When I first got into martial arts I was 10 I am now 70 when I went for my fifth Dan black belt I had to do more than just Kata moves I had to do two different katas then I had to take on three opponents at one time then two opponents then one opponent then it was breaking boards
Every school is different; our school does an exam similar to yours, which in total is about 2 hours, but based on this exam and his technique , Sensei Luis knows his stuff.

My 1st dan test at 15yo was a blindfold for every kata and the last kata in reverse. 30 mins nonstop sparring against multiple fresh black belts. 50 situps/pushups/squats. 20 spinning jumping hook kicks in a row. 20 mins of board breaking. Then, we all had the opportunity to take on the grand Master. I was the only student to tag a point on him in his illustrious 40 year career, and he never let me live it down. I changed schools. I've been a 4th dan instructor for 25 years. Good times!
Good strong technique. I notice this karate site has the confidence to let you leave comments. Many, many TaekwonDo sites do not. After watching some of them, full of young tykes with black belts all tripping over each other and breaking wafer thin boards, I know why.
Why at Godan are they showing kihon, they obviously know they can do them. They should be showing the whys and wherefors of kata application, questioned about different subjects. Its lost its way. I know many high ranks and when i converse with them im sure they havent got a clue what im talking about.
Very... Surprising... In my federation (France), those kind of technics or bunkai wouldn't pass the exam. It's pure fantasy, and I would personnally add that this give a bad image of karate.

For my Shodan I had to perform 13 kata and then fight 10 other black belts, one after the other, two minute bouts, no rest. I am not impresssed. (Gosoku Ryu)
The reason it is done like this it is because only a 7th Dan can be a true judge and is the only one that can permit someone to go from 4th Dan to 5th Dan. There are probably 10 or so people all within 5th Dan and maybe one or 2 that are 6th Dan. Most 7th Dan are in Japan, 8th Dan are like less than a hundred. 9th dan, maybe like in the lower double digits, and 10th dan well, they might no longer exist. 10th Dan would have devoted their entire lives to Karate and even then only had achieved 9th Dan
Not at all I have the utmost respect for martial artists.I trained in my youth graded a few times .Since I have long covid now caught in the first outbreak as a nurse I realise how I took good health for granted it would take real dedication to get to the level of fitness necessary to train at the level shown.I find it therapeutic watching Karate for some reason wish I had that health level of fitness our health is everything.

This is a significant accomplishment for people who want to preserve Karate in it's original form. However it you're interested in true empty hand fighting skills it's an incredible waste of time. Modern fighters stand on the shoulders of the various founding masters but there are much better ways to train for unarmed battle today.
as someone who practiced karate for over 40 years, I claim that 30 years ago this was the level for 1 KYU - many will condemn my attitude, but that is the sad truth of karate!
Ok… I did not look for this and it came up in my feed randomly. And this is why karate is a load of bull. I studied wado Ryu… for a long time… kata kata kata and over protected sparring… had a real fight … and got a beating… bollocks to this rubbish… switched to boxing ( should have been Muay Thai ) and very unfortunately and as much as I tried to de-escalate the situation, was the victim of road rage… except the other guy ending up with a busted jaw…

ABER wenn du glaubst das diese Anwendungen (Bunkai) in einer Schlägerei funktionieren dann hast du echt keinen Realitätssinn.Ich betreibe selbst Karate und Judo seit 17 Jahren ich weiß wo von ich spreche! Kämpfe mal gegen einen Kickboxer oder MMA Fighter da kannst du bei reinem Sport Karate nach hause gehen die lachen sich tot.

Fifth Dan test. Why not demonstrate an extraordinary level of applying skills rather than executing rote memorized movements.
That’s what he IS doing. Each movement is a defense and attack, only without the person being there.
