Great video-for advanced and well-heeled anglers. For me, lacking the resources, it was discouraging. These baits are expensive. Any advice for those of us on a budget?

As a fisherman that makes 98% of my own lures I know exactly what you are talking about. I don't weigh mine yet, conversely I do float test everyone before final paint and luster. Also at the sealing point they will all get a cast test. The first is the flight test. If it tumbles I'm likely to change hook design and start the float test all over. Then once it flies straight I will go to the test pond and see how it floats or sinks before the tow test. Any adjustments again will be by bending hooks or adding split rings to get the float and retrieve actions where I want. Then back to the paint shop [of late I am painting ALL, preferring not to have shiney hooks] (Are minnows born with hooks sticking out of their bellies and asses?) to paint and luster. Another casting flight test. If all good the last operation is installing the eyes. More luster spray and final flight and casting test. Yes Sir I know exactly what you are talking about. And you are the best fishermen God created in my book. Oh my what I see money can do with these TV guys selling crap and those with nothing to show but cranking in fish. Thanks, may the Lord Richly Bless you my Brother.
I remember wrapping solder around the hook shanks of my rogues and filling the bath tub with water and adding ice to get temp to match the lake I’m fishing, putting the baits in the tub and adjusting the weight until they would suspend. Weighing hooks, hell that’s simple compared to what we used to have to do.
there is a vision 110+3 plus 3 as well.....a tackle junkie myself......... but you have to order from japan ,I ordered a half dozen last year when they came out......last winter if i remember right. awesome on suspended fish in clear water...

Looking forward to hearing which new jerkbaits you guys like! Hopefully something less expensive than the Vision 110 or the Rerange impresses because I have one of each but am always hesitant to throw them
This video is just in time for me I was out the other day trying to balance some. What are you running on the rerange? They come with much stouter hooks than the 110 and I’m fishing the upper James river where I tend to chip or break the lips off more often than I’d like and I’d rather lose $15 than $25 plus even in the colder weather the smallmouth seem to prefer the jackal over the 110 in the river so I save my 110s for the lake. Thanks in advance and keep up the in depth videos👍🏻
I have had some success stretching out used floro a little to remove coil. Hook it to the dock or something let out a long cast worth of line and put a decent amount of tension on it but be reasonable. It helps.
Fluorocarbon has to be Steamed (heated) and straightened. Then allow it to Cool-down before easing the tension. It’s a bit time consuming to treat a whole Spool but it works every time.
Awesome video Matt! Quick question, what about 10-15 pound braid, using a 12-18 foot floro leader on spinning setup? I realize braid can rip hooks out, but if your floro leader is long enough is that an option since you still have stretch there? Obviously the advantage with the mainline braid is no coils and better sensitivity. Is that worth the trade off? Maybe it is if you’re using spinning gear versus bait caster, because I would not put that small braid on a bait caster. Ha ha. God bless!
Hey matt, I fish a lot of tidal water in Florida that is stained to chocolate milk. Any color reccomendations for stained water as far as translucent, matte colors, shiny. Most of the water I fish is in the 0-12 foot range. Thanks for all the tips! Keep it up!
Matt... for us guys that can’t change line as often as you suggest, can we put more mono or flouro on... instead of 8, 10, or 12 ft of leader, could we put 20 or 30 ft on my braid and get similar results???
Matt, you should talk about drag too. I mean with 10 or 12 lb fluorocarbon should we not horse them in with no drag? Or what. I'm new to fluorocarbon this year, and I really have no idea how strong it really is.
Great content! Is there a reason not to go with a very long leader of flouro to prevent the line memory from being an issue? Other than seeing the line?
I bought a Shimano SLX 6'10 med and the curado 70 and i have been so impressed and happy with the setup. I dont think U can get a better jerkbait combo for the money.
Hey there Matt. I'm up here in Oregon, and my buddy and I have found a treasure trove of a bass fishery. While fishing jerk baits, I have broke off multiple times using 12 floro. I've currently changed up to 15lb yo-zuri hybrid. The only thing I've noticed with this line is that it's a bit bigger on the diameter than most other floros I've fished with, but seems to work well enough and not affect the bait in the water. ie... weighing the baits down, ect.. Was wondering what your thoughts were on helping keep line size down for small jerk baits for catching fish up here that small size 4lbs up to what we belive could be the new oregon state record witch is at 12lbs and a hair over
I've been reading jerkbait threads like mad to determine best replacement hooks for Lucky Craft Pointer 100's and 78's - Really most of their jerkbaits are in sizes 5 and/or 6. But I saw an eye opening video where Matt was weighing split rings with trebles because with jerk baits especially, if you mess up the balance then there goes your ability to suspend the bait as was designed, and u just opened a bigger can of worms than ditching the hooks that still probably work 7 or 8 out of 10 bites! I just bought some of the Gamy, Aaron Martens TGW G Finesse trebles (in sizes 5 and 6), and they're noticeably smaller in size than the stocked Lucky Craft . I know Matt has a ton of the Lucky Crafts and wished he'd remark on this. I can't afford to go out buying MegaBass jerkbaits at $25 or whatever a throw - I've got plenty of these Lucky crafts that have been great for years, just need a solution to an alternative hook (since they no longer market for these Lucky Craft jerkbaits) that someone knows won't alter the suspending characteristics.
Do you find a certain reel speed works better while jerkbait fishing or does it not matter as much due to fishing it on slack? Thanks as always. Great way to start a day👍
As you talked about when you have old fluorocarbon and it kinks it is the death of your fishing. Could you do like 20 pound braid to 10 pound florocarbon leader?
The smithwick rogue is very trixky to get balanced perfect. But if and whn u do.. it will out perform about any other jerk bait. Especially in the midwest..
@@bassman2162 everyone has to make a living..and they do a great service teaching us all the time. Im ok with it. Plus people want to know if the high end stuff outperforms, everybody has cheap jerk baits. They all catch fish tho.
I struggle with casting distance when throwing a jerkbait. Would a standard 70 size reel a DC reel help me more? I know braid to leader instead of straight floro can help but I’m fishing crystal clear water in the Great Lakes so I’m hesitant to try that
It definitely wouldn't hurt by any means. The 70 size in general is pretty decent at throwing lighter baits. You could also try it on on spinning rod/reel. I can actually throw further on my spinning setup.
Braid to leader works fine in the great lakes too. I use a good rod with 8lb fluoro and get all the distance I could possibly need. If you're throwing really light jerkbaits, then go spinning rod.
I know you provided budget rod recommendations, but I need a rod I can use for other techniques as well. What would you recommend to throw small square bills and jerkbaits.
I've heard from multiple people that the vision 110+1 goes just as deep if not a tad deeper than the vision+2. I know the +2 is made to go deeper but does it actually go deeper?
Hey Matt or Tim or anyone who knows the answer....its a little off topic but here goes. I'm changing my hooks and split rings on my LV500 lipless to the size 4 owner st56 but on the original hooks I notice that the front and back hook are 2 different sizes. Are you guys using the owner st56 size 4 on on both or are you sizing one smaller than the other? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Ryan.
Man I’m struggling badly trying to get my first jerkbait fish. Finally had one come up today and look at it but he turned on it visibility was super clear I could see about 15 ft down
Hey Matt, you said #8 for the Junior but the smallest TGW Nano Finesse hook they sell is a #6, both at TW and on Gamakatsu's website. Is that the one you're using? Or is there a #8 available somewhere else? Love the 110 Junior for sure! I throw it on a spinning rod and 6lb Sniper.
That number 8 is not a nano finesse. Unfortunately their smallest hook still weighs too much. The direct weight replacement is actually a 1X round bend. The link in the description is the correct hook 👍
The only problem with changing hooks is many new hooks make your Megabass lures sink if you break them off. The original hooks will make the lure float back to the top of the water and you can find them. On the other hand you can retrieve changed hooks with a magnet if they are not too tangled.
We've covered this extensively in other videos, even going as far as to weigh hooks and split rings on a gram scale. Our hook recommendations are perfect Replacements.
I have some vision 110s and have put them in my tank and they do rise up . This is with stock hooks from the factory . Water temp is about 63. Am I missing something?
Het Matt...you always emphasize when jerk bait fishing that after the jerks, the bait come to a complete stop. Any interest kills the interest of a bass. Well how do you jerk bait fish on a river where there is constant current and a complete stop is impossible? Or even a lake with wind blowing the top of the water? Thank you for all your great videos!
hey got a good question I live in Akron Ohio and I do a lot of fishing at the one lake that does not have a map for it and i fish from shore and there is some big bass in it my favorite bait is keitech any idea for fishing this time of the year

@@bassman2162 everyone has to make a living..and they do a great service teaching us all the time. Im ok with it. Plus people want to know if the high end stuff outperforms, everybody has cheap jerk baits. They all catch fish tho.
Thank you for uploading this to break up my election blues! I need some serious work on Jerkbaits and this video helps so much! Thanks dudes!!!

I just bought some 110 Jrs I am extremely new to jerkbaits are these baits supposed to suspend right out of the pack because mine did not mine rose
I know you provided budget rod recommendations, but I need a rod I can use for other techniques as well. What would you recommend to throw small square bills and jerkbaits.
Do you use line conditioners on your floro and if so what type do you go with that doesn't stain your line.
I've heard from multiple people that the vision 110+1 goes just as deep if not a tad deeper than the vision+2. I know the +2 is made to go deeper but does it actually go deeper?
Yes. Up in Minnesota i was hitting bottom in 12’ on 10lb fluro. Only thing they would bite in 40.2 degree water
You use a jerk bait from shore or do you have to find those bait balls first.
For 110+1 hook size. Is that a size 5 replacement hook?
ONCE YOU GET IT BALANCE IN A TUB WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES THE LINE MAKE ?
I have some vision 110s and have put them in my tank and they do rise up . This is with stock hooks from the factory . Water temp is about 63. Am I missing something?
Het Matt...you always emphasize when jerk bait fishing that after the jerks, the bait come to a complete stop. Any interest kills the interest of a bass. Well how do you jerk bait fish on a river where there is constant current and a complete stop is impossible? Or even a lake with wind blowing the top of the water? Thank you for all your great videos!
I've noticed that some baits will sink or float in different temperature water rather than suspend. Have you seen this?
Matt...have you tried Sunline Sniper for jerkbait? I see it strongly recommended by Hook Up Tackle. What's the deal between Assassin and Sniper?
hey got a good question I live in Akron Ohio and I do a lot of fishing at the one lake that does not have a map for it and i fish from shore and there is some big bass in it my favorite bait is keitech any idea for fishing this time of the year
Since you are o the east coast now, you should do a video in trout swimbaits for big smallmouth
I fish the delta and with moving water, is it important for the bait to be still or just hold its depth?
Megabass Vision 110 is the NRX of Jerkbaits 😅
Im new to bass fishing and all the bass lures i buy dive to deep i dont understand the bills and what they do i want a 4-10' deep smooth glide not all crazy
So good!
Is the 8:1 to fast for a Jerkbait reel? Or is 7:2 better. Looking at the SLX MGL
