I started babysitting in 1976 until around 1984. I watched all these replays on a Saturday night at 12:00 midnight. This brings back fond memories and I remember all these horses and drivers. When 3 year olds were raced with aged. I always say a younger cannot beat an oldie but goody. 🐴❤
Carmine was the king of wire to wite winners in those days. Wow. Laughing at how a .57 half was a hot pace in those days. Thanks for posting. Great memories
That was a STACKED field. Most of those horses had their moments of glory. Direct Scooter was Aged horse of the year in 1980. I seem to remember Le Baron Rouge beating Direct Scooter in the Mohawk Gold Cup the next year with one of his patented stretch kicks. Lime Time was Canadian Aged Horse of the year a couple of years later. Good Stuff harnessdom!
Was there as a kid with my father and remember going just to see one of the best group of racehorses competing together in my lifetime. For me it was like watching a prize fight having no idea who would win and not even sure who to root for because they were all class animals.
Used to watch this show every week until Dad died a few months before this race, and once Mom started taking me to the track and OTB in late 1980, so 1979 was a gap year for my horseplaying.
I don't think it's the horses, so much as it is the way they bank the turns and the equipment they're allowed to use on the bikes. If the breed could be advanced that fast, then why hasn't it happened with thoroughbreds?

Stan Bergstein was the GOOGLE of Harness Racing in it's glory days!
I worked for one of the greatest horseman in the business Joe lighthill. And he said shelly was best driver he ever seen!!
Sad to see how far Yonkers has fell in class
Where are you Stan, Jack and Bob

They had way heavier equipment, non aerodynamic bikes, non atomic drugs. These same horses today would go at least 8 seconds faster
One of the great drivers in the history of the sport. Died way to young.

not to mention a 9yo old Willie, past his prime by a couple of years .....
Big trip!
race track announcer JACK E LEE

Wire to wire Shelly
My dad died in 1979 so I missed the racing show for the first time in years.
There was no better track announcer then Jack E Lee. one for the ages. my vote hands down. Welcome to the world capital.
He was good though I wouldn't call him the best. Tom Durkin gets that for me.
Couldn't agree with you more. As Jack would say, "Forget the rest"
Oh that half mile racing!!
Ask no quarters give no quarter. Give no ground, park their ass!
Jack e.lee was best.Laŕry Lederman a close 2nd, Tony Salvero 3rd.FORGET THE REST!
My dad died in March 1979 so I stopped following racing until September, 1980, when Mom began taking me to Belmont every other week.
👍👍
As usual, thanks Dom!

Carmine from the 8-hole was a great bet. Once paid $75.00
TWENTY-EIGHT AND ONE! (now they go 25.4).

The bikes were changed to super light weight. Allows for much faster miles
Stan Bergstein. A Icon.
@@geoffreycoleman3346 Standardbreds are a much younger breed. They are still evolving and have more thoroughbred blood now than then.
