The first time I heard Keith Whitley, he was singing this song, and he was wearing a worn out Levi denim jacket, and he looked like he had been dragged out of an alley and thrown onto the stage. It was a different episode of Nashville Now. And then he sang this song, and I remember telling my songwriting partner "this guy is going to be a major star". I wasn't far wrong. For several years after his passing, a string of male country singers made good money trying to sound like Keith Whitley. I also cover this song, but I don't think I ever heard a better version than Keith's.
I believe Ferlin Huskey was the first one I ever heard do the song.. Of course Keith Whitley sang like it happened to him last week. A great voice, he sold the song no matter what it was.
Love this tune and love Keith ! My dad wrote a couple of Keith's songs, along with two other incredible writers, so it's a treat hearing Keith anytime. Thank you for sharing !
I like keith but George strait also contributed alot of traditional country of the same caliber back then also and was around quite a bit longer then keith in the 80's
he should be in the country music hall of fame. a superstar that left too early.
He's in now thankfully
Oh how big could this great singer could have been. Whitley and Hank Sr. had a bottle that let them down.
Classic Keith Whitley voice nuances. Man that guy could sing.
As unique as Willie Nelson As smooth as George Straight. As a original As George Jones this was the best voice country music has ever seen.
Keith Voice Is Beautiful Rip
Great song written by premiere country songwriter HARLAN HOWARD. Was a big hit for singer Charlie Walker in 1958.
CW did a heck of a job with Pick Me Up On Your Way Down
As did Ray Price and Martina McBride.
Best country singer of all time
Not a chance.
That's a country singer right there.
Wow. I've never seen this video until now. Keith Whitley could sing anything. Miss his music so much.
Keith was a modern day version of Hank Williams Sr all the talent anyone could ask for sadly like Hank he left the world too soon .
Always loved Keith music so sad he left us so early in his life!!
fantastic KEITH WHITLEY * 💌

Nashville Now performance. Great band.
What a great performance from Keith, as usual. My grandmother and I used to spend hours watching Nashville Now. Good memories.

Your dad had a great voice as well! Thankful for his service also. A Chance & Homecoming 63 are two of my favorites from his pen.
