  • If you want to drilldown multiple levels in a scatterplot, this tip is for you. In this tip, I show you have to create a 3 level drilldown with a scatterplot.
    Naturally after I showed how to create a 3 level bar chart drilldown, someone immediately asked how to do it with a scatterplot. Unlike the bar chart drilldown, the scatterplot will only show you marks for the current level.
    For example:
    1. When I’m at the highest level, I see only regions.
    2. When I drill down one level, I only see States within the Region selected
    3. When I drill down one more level, I only see postal codes that are within the region and state I selected.
    This example shows you how to drill down from Region to State to Postal Code. To use this for yourself:
    1. Download the workbook
    2. Copy all of the calculations into your workbook
    3. Swap out the dimensions
    Note that you will need to recreate the sets and set actions. This will work with any combination of 3 dimensions.
    If you have any questions, please leave a comment.

    I keep watching your videos to help me as a data analyst, so thank you for everything. Do you have a video that shows how to lock the top-level view despite changing categories-the opposite of drill down? But Tableau keeps changing the high-level view to lower. I can't find anything on it. I want a view to lock to my first one at the highest level in a dual axis, for example. It keeps going to a lower filter...😢. If can do this will make query much easier in tableau.

    Thank you soo much!! This video has been very valuable. Would the same logic apply for a heatmap drilldown? I have a use case where I am working towards creating a drill down of heatmaps but with different measurements.

    Hi Andy, both Drilldowns (Bar&Scatter) are great! I use the 2 and 3 level dd a lot. Would be nice to have it dynamic with swapping the Dimension. Possible? greetings.

      It should work if you use the "replace references" functionality. I haven't tried, but it should work.

    Hi Andy, Just a question how would you deal with "null values" in my 1.Region set (1.SubType Set) I have null values, in my 2. State set (2. Subtype cat set) I have null values, and my 4. Postal Set (4. sub type cat set) I have null values. I need to show the null values as they may be null in 1 set but not null in the other sets. Also, how would you deal with the same names within each set?
    BTW - I have learned so much from your videos, keep them coming they are great

    Hi Andy. I must say that you are one of the best in explaining the solutions and ideas you supply. At least I feel like I easily can follow along.
    I do however have a question for you: Is there a way to "select" or "filter" on the last level instead of going back to the top. I have a case, where I am drilling down 1 level, but then would like to filter on only that last level instead of going back to the top (maybe there could be a "button" to reset the view/return to region in this case??).
    To make it specific to the case in the video, let's say I have a dashboard with the scatterplot, but besides this, I have a more detailed view in a table that filters on the drilldowns like in the video --> and when we then are at the postal code level, all postal codes are present in the detailed view. I would then like to being able to only see a "selected" postal code from the graph in the details. Is this possible?
    I hope that you can follow me, and hopefully invent a stellar solution! :)
    Keep up the good work.

      @vizwiz  Рік тому

      A couple options wouldn’t be to add a reset button to the dashboard or another action as a menu action which appears in the tooltip. I’m sure there are others as well.

    Super helpful Andy! btw Is it possible to have different colors within the same categories?

    • @vizwiz
      @vizwiz  Рік тому

      Yes. You’ll need additional fields on the color shelf, but definitely possible.

    How about a drill down tree map where the next drill down level isn't necessarily the next step down in a hierarchy

  • @DanielWeikert
    @DanielWeikert Рік тому

    Any Ideas how I can change the set action from 2 different worksheets without resetting? Both worksheets target the same set but when I make the selection from the second worksheet I always need to click twice because table resets the set first.
    Thanks

    • @vizwiz
      @vizwiz  Рік тому

      If they update the same set, then both worksheets should be updating. If you want them to work independently, then set up two sets and two actions. That's if I'm understanding you correctly.

    Hey Andy, great video and getting a lot of great feedback on incorporating this in a dashboard.
    I'm having 1 issue, I think since my level 1 (my Division) and level 2 (my Region) have a value with same name I am unable to get to level 3.
    What I tried to do was create a case statement. When Region = Headquarters, change the name to 'HQ' but I am still unable to get to level 3.
    Any ideas/suggestions?
    Works for all of my other Regions and Divisions, just not when they equal the same thing (in this one instance).

    • @vizwiz
      @vizwiz  Рік тому

      Something like If level 1 = level 2 then level 2 + '-' basically add a string to the end.
