The French Defense is a solid and a resilient chess opening for Black which occurs after the opening moves 1.e4 e6. And the counter journey begins with a surprise move: 2.b3. This move throws your opponent off balance immediately, and chances are, they have zero knowledge about this unorthodox approach.

Igor GRAND MASTER
FRENCH Defense: Horwitz Attack, Papa-Ticulat Gambit ! Thanks Igor this is my new Line VS my Fav opening the french defense (when Im Black )
support their pawn on e4 and prepare their kingside for castling. Additionally, Bb2 also serves as an attacking piece that could put pressure on Black's pawn structure.
White opens up their options for future gameplay and sets the foundation for a strong position in the middle game. Therefore, Bb2 is a common and effective move in the French Defense: Horwitz Attack
can be countered by playing 3...exd4 accepting the gambit they can play 3...NF6, threatening to target the d4-pawn.
Black can also play 3...d4 to challenge white's control of the center. Focus on counter-attacking the white pawn structure.
love the simplicity of White's plans( witch is normally the Black that have that privilege in the french Defense !♥
Thanks Igor again really love your work and dedication to teach to thecommunity your tips and trick !! 👌👍
Igor, thank you for this useful lesson! Could you please record a video lesson about an interesting gambit in the French defense: Baeuerle Gambit 1. e4, e6; 2. d4, b5 !?
I'm a French Defense player so you have my undivided attention.
Bro has double the armor

EXCELLENT - I will definitely use it!!
genius...the French defense is super common, I will enjoy using this system, thanks Igor!!!
Very helpful
As a French defense player, I'm not happy with you Igor!!!
Super helpful thank you I have been looking for openings against the French defence for a long time🤩🤩🤩
😊
Thkd
Insane! Thank you so much, I finally have something to beat half my club players!
Cool! Good luck.
As a French player, I really didn't have a thought out response to that but even in dxe4 lines I still have 50% Wins with black against people who were surely more prepared than me. So yeah, an unexpecting player might take on e4 but even then it's still a game. And here comes the caveat for the people watching this video: Prepare something for French players not taking the pawn on e4! Even in their main lines many people won't take on e4 because they don't want to play the Rubinstein/Burn-Variations and go for Winawer/Classical French instead.
J. Watson writes: 1.e4 e6 2.b3 d5 3.Bb2 dxe4 requires theory knowledge and recommends 3...Nf6 or (his main line) 2...b6 instead. But I haven't tried those yet.
Nice line I will give it a try
I have been getting crushed playing the French so a weirdly helpful video for me 😅 thanks
Nice video
Nice video, but perhaps not the most relevant replies for Black - what should White do after 1. e4 e6, 2. b3 d5 3. Bb2 Nc6....one recommendation might by 4. e5 but after 4....d4 the e5 pawn is a bit astray. 4. exd5 exd5 looks very okay for Black, 4. Qe2 is interesting....I'd say 3...Nc6 is a pretty good reply to 2. b2 :-\
This is a cool line, though i find it a bit passive if my opponent plays the move 3 c5 very early to break my center ( in fact i play this line), me personally i find 3 Nc3 BB4 the Winawer the most fun line against the French.
On a side note
I think a underrated opening that works is the Trompowsky Attack with d4 Nf6 which i get very interesting playable positions no matter what my opponent plays after Nf6
Any aggressive attacks or gambits agains the Caro Kahn?
Love your channel Igor!
Thanks for the suggestion. We will make a note.
Von Hennig Gambit is great
Thomas Johansson has written a book about 2.b3 about 20 years ago. It's called The Fascinating Réti Gambit. So I've known since a long time: 2...b6 or 2.. c5.
ND5! discovered attack on Queen and mate threat with unleashing bishop. If they move queen, then BXP, and it is mate a few moves later
This is actually Gotham's (aka Levy) recommendation against the French, and also in his Gotham gambits course
This Gambit was invented by Richard Reti. Reti first played this line against Geza Maroczy in 1920. Many GMs have played this variation. This is absolutely not a Gotham opening.
@@--Mordal-- Yo, I just said that this is in his course, not that it is his opening.
Yea chill out Mordal I use this opening against French cause of Gotham chess (shhh I bought the course) AND ITS REALLY GOOD
Igor I am watching your video and learning french defense today's video 😇
❤
Some mistake here how can pawn B4 can capture pawn C4
Needed this since all my friend plays w black is french😂❤
Basically 3...Nc6 is the best way for Black to get a slight advantage. But only very advanced chess players know this.
Btw which game was this?
Hiii, good gaming to studying
I play e6 and happy to play 2.d5 or 2.c5.. if I saw 2.b3 I would probably go with the latter.
Thanks and remember me because one day i ll play against you okay?
4:48 immediately saw it
Some more video in this line
Take up thy bed and walk! At some point, you need to do your own analysis, which is usually a lot easier to remember than somebody else's.
As a French player I'm not happy about this😮
some of this tactics seem hard to find in a timed game !
That's why knowing these ideas when your opponent doesn't gives you a huge advantage.
This is also known as the Reti gambit. The game in the video is Tamaz Gelashvili vs Mahir Deniz.
A nice way to relegate your opponent's 100 hours of studying the French to the trash heap. And one reader's suggestion that 3...Nc6 gives Black a slight advantage (a dubious claim - being completely equal is not equivalent to having any kind of advantage) may be valid to some extent, but how likely is your opponent to even consider that move? And even if he does, I'm fine with an equal position where I can expect to have good winning chances if I'm the better player - since my opponent can no longer play the first five to fifteen moves from memory. One caveat - White should be prepared to play the Snyder Sicilian should Black play 2...c5.
Being equal means white is losing since they would've likely wasted a move that put him in that position because the white pieces start out with a clear advantage.
That commentator said 3. Nc6 not 3. Nc3....
This exchange variation.
All these lines are never going to happen in a game .
It's him simply showing a game lol
Bro nc3 is the main line
Nc3 is way better for white
And I thought playing the French as black was punishment in itself 😂. I will try these ideas today 😈
Sir if he
My opponent like to move to knight to e7 second move of the game
So basically, deny White all that nonsense by not capturing the pawn :)
More like white is the side that denies black's usual French ideas. White is not disappointed when black avoids capturing the e4 pawn.
What if black plays 3...Nc6
My bot did that
After watching this and playing Bb2 no one has ever taken the pawn 😭
This is like King's Indian but on White Queen Side
OKay you made a youtube video where French defense players only taking your e5 pawn. But WHAT IF THEY DON'T(what usually they do not take e5 pawn)? (I think this video is half like uploaded...). I like your videos but this is like half info that you give to people
Am here after a french player ruined my streak
I used to play the French, thent I ftound out my stats for the French were worse than all other e4 defenses combined.
That's what french players get for playing one of the most annoying openings to ever exist at all levels of the game.
This is what Levy teaches in his E4 course. Very effective weapon.

Three weeks ago: "Best Chess Opening to Counter 1.e4 as Black" is French Defense. Today: if you do that here's how you will die.
Few weeks ago he recommends playing the French, now he's showing how to crush it. He's playing a double game with us.

You videos are superpe. It is pity that you speek so well English - I understand only 50% of what was said.
After some time I see it for the second, maybe for the third time. I don´t know but maybe it is done a little superficially - in only 7 minutes. The black is not obligate to play in the way, like it is said by GM Smirnov. But thank you for your video.
But black can play c5 transforming the game into a Sicilian like set-up which is ummm....🫤.
And you didn't cover anything about this in the video.
