I have seen them several times and I have ALWAYS had an amazing time! They know how to put on a show that makes you sing and want to scream...YEAH!! :D They have never disappointed. Adore Tommy Shaw

I was at this concert, front and center! I still have the ticket stub: MON APR 13.1981. It was general admission and I pushed my groups way to the front during the opening act. Then they announced they were going to film the concert so some guy let me sit on his shoulders for most of the concert so we might be seen. The crowd was pushing forward so hard you could lift your feet and not fall! Styx was a kick ass good show and truly delivered on all fronts. Thanks for posting!
this is one of the great things about STYX - each of the big three - Dennis, Tommy, JY, each wrote their songs and did the lead voice on their own tunes - and you can tell in the first few bars of each of their songs who wrote it and who is singing lead - CLASS
Not necessarily true. There are several songs through out Styx's recording history where two (& sometimes all three) singer/songwriters wrote a song, and they had to decide who would sing lead on it. "Best Thing" (written by JY/DDY) "Lorelei" (DDY/JY) "Born For Adventure" (DDY/JY) "Superstars" (TS/DDY) "I'm OK" (DDY/JY) "Borrowed Time" (DDY/JY) "Rockin' The Paradise" (DDY/TS) "Snowblind" (TS/JY/DDY) {TS wasn't given writing credits on the Lp for this track} All of these songs (there are others as well), were written by at least two of the guys, (in a few cases all 3 songwriters). And they decided who would perform lead vocals on it...
this is the video that made me a Styx fan. I was already familiar with their hits, but not much else. Stumbled across this one day about 13 years ago and was just blown away. In their prime, they delivered on all fronts.
I knew there was a good reason this was one of my favorite songs on the album. It is because the lead guitarist is in control. It rocks harder than other songs. A change in voice is refreshing also.
It was taken at the Capital Center in Largo, Maryland which is about 15 minutes outside of Washington DC. If you watch the clip for Lights from this show Tommy makes a reference to being in DC.
JY and TS are one of the best pair of guitarist I've seen on stage. I've seen Richards and Woods together in their hey day and even people like Eddie Van Halen with Sammy Hagar, along with others never measured up as a working pair the way these guys do.
Wow, so great. Styx were, and are, so fresh, feel-good music, stage presence, banter, audience involvement. I got a few of their albums in the late 1970s. The opening here by JY ,has essences of Free Form Guitar, by the incomparable Terry Kath. I just like Styx so much.
Yeah. My mother took me and my sister and some of our friends for my b-day. Back then shows were comparatively inexpensive. I think 10 bucks a ticket. That show was GREAT! I remember Rush played a couple of nights later and the school had a contest the next Monday something like Styx shirts vs. Rush shirts. It seemed like everybody in the school was at one of the two shows. Great memory.
You got your moneys worth, about six years earlier I saw my first show. Bought floor seats to see Led Zepplin for $7.50! The damn T-Shirt I came home with cost more than the ticket I think/
James Young is under rated. I guarantee you Eddie Van Halen learned a lot from this guy. Of course the whole band at this time was killer. Tommy Shaw is still one of my favorite guitarist but James Young was the star in this band.
@styxtoury, my parents yelled at me and told me to turn down the "record player" with the Styx album.... about this same year. Wow, I remember this tour.... was, the best of times, was the worst of times..... good concert though. great group.
He was stuck and frustrated just a bit. I can relate some with my own experiences. Glad he ended up on the winning side even if it wasn't his side be blessed sometimes to be the benefactor of what you didn't ask for. I mean he was frustrated to be a soft band, but it paid him I love the whole band Styx even the frustrated ones
Question for true JY fans only : Take DDY, TS, JP, they aged, but they still have the same attitude, the same expressions. I cannot find the Styx 81 videos JY in the other videos. I wouldn't have known JY could be sexy, beautiful, exciting, expressive, extraverted, 1000 volts radiant and fun to look at if I had not watched this. In older videos, he doesn't smile the same, doesn't move that way on stage, he doesn't even hold his guitar the same way ! Does anybody know what happened to him ?
Bill Simon I couldn't agree more. How could they rock like this and then write a song like Babe. Other bands have done the same....REO Speedwagon comes to mind!
Blame punk rock! Genesis beat Styx with selling out to ballad with "Follow You Follow Me" a year earlier. Even Rush and Pink Floyd ixnayed long songs after 1978 for shorter songs with more varied lyrical themes.
They were all great together. But nothing lasts forever. No use casting blame. Many blame DeYoung for MrR destroying the band - but to me it was all just part of their creative journey. Tommy still has a huge fan base and I adore him. Most bands end up imploding at some point. But look at all the great stuff they left us.
@PhilistineTheArtLuvr idk if that'll ever happen, ive seen styx without young and it was alright, and i saw deyoung by himself and i can honestly say that he was 100 times better
It's kinda funny. There are different guitarists and there are different genres that these guitarists thrive in. But it seems everybody has a little Hendrix in them.
No you are not, but without Babe there would be no Styx today. Not to many bands would refuse to play 80% of their top 10 hits. Many of todays fans don't know the classic lineup.
Sometimes you might not like a band at all but they might have a Killer, Killer song...Like for example: I Hate, HATE 'Journey'..But 'Wheel in the Sky' is a great song...Don't like 'Van Halen' much. But 'Cradle', and 'Mean Street' are Killer Kick Ass songs (See how this works).. Don't like a lot of 'Styx'. But Maybe 'Grand Illusion', and 'Blue Collar Man'..But this here song...FUCK!...This here song should automatically get 'Styx' into the 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame'...if they're not already in...Why? Just turn it the Fuck Up!...Full Blast!.....That's why....frankm62yroldwhitekid
Great memories. Styx was THE band for me... until "Babe." They lost me from there. I've seen them a couple of times since. Am I the only one who thinks the band is better without Dennis?
Babe was big but not tops .. Mr. roboto was the bullshit that broke them up Dennis wanted to go Broadway and the rest of the band wanted to ROCK AND ROLL.. Lawrence Gowan filled in nicely and they kicked ass.
Chuck, I know you also love KISS who also went to crap after Ace Frehley and Peter Criss retired. Also you are a liberal and an Atheist and watch Family Guy. You also think Roger Waters was Pink Floyd.
SRV a jerk? I've read and listened to a lot of interviews with him as well as heard stories from people who've met him and they all indicate that he was a genuinely nice, down to earth person.
+hamtrak That's because back in the 80's songs were well written and played with true passion. Nowadays the songs are shit and phony onstage personas and flashy onstage gimmicks are in.
James Young is such an underrated guitarist.
I have seen them several times and I have ALWAYS had an amazing time! They know how to put on a show that makes you sing and want to scream...YEAH!! :D They have never disappointed. Adore Tommy Shaw

JY's always been the coolest member of Styx writing,co-writing and singing on the band's heaviest tunes!!!!!
Agree with you on that...🎸🙂🎶
this is the video that made me a Styx fan. I was already familiar with their hits, but not much else. Stumbled across this one day about 13 years ago and was just blown away. In their prime, they delivered on all fronts.
I just love the way JY and Tommy Shaw hang with each other like brothers.
I knew there was a good reason this was one of my favorite songs on the album. It is because the lead guitarist is in control. It rocks harder than other songs. A change in voice is refreshing also.
definitely agree. he's my neighbor. nicest guy alive. played guitar for me :)
We just came back from the south pacific when this came out.all i can really remember is having a good time.nice post.thanks
When rock and roll was still rock and roll, and not the crap of today! hahaha
I love his solo!!!!! JY!!! I've seen Styx twice live...They only sang this song the first time I saw them the second time they sang light up instead
I LOVE THIS SONG...
This is so cool. Styx in their heyday. I love it!!
They were one of the bands of many that had great songs that I enjoyed listening to. The concerts were awesome too.
James should get one of the amps from spinal tap. then he could crank it up to 11.
MAN!!! I remember those nights!
JY is so friggin under rated!
Happy 63rd birthday to JY(11/14/2012)!!
I Was 25..& Lovin' It!

Back when concert tickets were under $15 and most of the time it only cost around $10 to see an amazing band perform live.

Love all the music
STYX---"MISS AMERICA" CAPITAL CENTER
Spot light operator is doing an excellent job. Your an asset to your local union friend.
1981.....A wonderful moment in time.
That mullet kicks ass.
I saw Styx countless times in, like, '78 & '79. Nassau Collesium, Long Island.
Watched them last night on Urban Dead, man they were awesome! ;) All Wulve put your hands up in the air!
Spinal Tap would be proud. Still aweomse. Love Styx!
I love his enthusiasm.
They played this @ DEADWOOD, SD. An awesome concert still on a STYX high...
You got your moneys worth, about six years earlier I saw my first show. Bought floor seats to see Led Zepplin for $7.50! The damn T-Shirt I came home with cost more than the ticket I think/
Most undeserved forgotten and underrated band ever. Styx barely made it till the drugs took over control.
It can allmost make me cry.
this is jy at his finest. He does play that guitar loud.
I was at this show.
great stuff
too much talent
Damn, Rock and Roll is great ! USA!
JY is one of the best. No mistake!
James Young is under rated. I guarantee you Eddie Van Halen learned a lot from this guy. Of course the whole band at this time was killer. Tommy Shaw is still one of my favorite guitarist but James Young was the star in this band.
young's voice was the animal! just like his gitar, mid range graval! The rest were Psam-doved twits.
@styxtoury, my parents yelled at me and told me to turn down the "record player" with the Styx album.... about this same year. Wow, I remember this tour.... was, the best of times, was the worst of times..... good concert though. great group.

be blessed sometimes to be the benefactor of what you didn't ask for.
I mean he was frustrated to be a soft band, but it paid him
I love the whole band Styx
even the frustrated ones
If you have seen them in the current lineup - they are not soft.
This was my first concert ever as well! Do you remember the weather that day? It was Oct. 10, 1981, and it snowed an inch!
Oops, I meant to write CP, not JP...
Chuck has not aged nor changed a bit.
And oh how they danced..the little children of Stonehenge, Beneath the haunted moon. For fear that daybreak might come....too soon.
Question for true JY fans only : Take DDY, TS, JP, they aged, but they still have the same attitude, the same expressions. I cannot find the Styx 81 videos JY in the other videos. @Azznbad Damn straight! An awesome guitar solo by one of the best in the business!
And where are they now?
The little children of Stonehenge
And what would they say to us?
If we were here... tonight
@MarcusCMarcellus You are thinking of david spade no the other guitarist here is tommy shaw. The person singing and playing is James Young
James Young standing up there in his white suit, and singing the way he does, reminds me of Steve Martin. lol
Oh yeah. I forgot to include the ticket price, $9.90... tax included! Damn!
@manzanadecoco IKR!!!! I think Im the only one who gave you a thumbs up. God what the hell!?!? He is possesed. >:)
how did that Strat stay in tune?! ;)
vintage where was this vid taken..
Styx jumped the shark with "Babe"
Bill Simon I couldn't agree more. How could they rock like this and then write a song like Babe. Other bands have done the same....REO Speedwagon comes to mind!
Blame punk rock! Genesis beat Styx with selling out to ballad with "Follow You Follow Me" a year earlier. Even Rush and Pink Floyd ixnayed long songs after 1978 for shorter songs with more varied lyrical themes.
They were a great live band before blondy showed up.
They were all great together. But nothing lasts forever. No use casting blame. Many blame DeYoung for MrR destroying the band - but to me it was all just part of their creative journey. You out of your fruit loop mind
@PhilistineTheArtLuvr idk if that'll ever happen, ive seen styx without young and it was alright, and i saw deyoung by himself and i can honestly say that he was 100 times better

What are you talking about? He says there ws a time when his parents yelled for playing his music to loud, what kid hasn't?
Maybe thats why Tommy plays the main riff more than JY
ky jy !
Yes,but had to go to Marine Bootcamp. Was only 16 when i joined
:)
Eddie Van who???
No one knows who they were or what they were doing but their legacy remains.
No you are not, but without Babe there would be no Styx today. Not to many bands would refuse to play 80% of their top 10 hits. Many of todays fans don't know the classic lineup.
OMG his voice is too sexy...
so it is called BROTHERS now?
Sorry but I think it was April. April 14 1981. I still have my April 15th ticket stub...
Maybe thats why Tommy plays the main riff in this performance
corbinamondo b n,-; $
That's my point.
sick vid! how did his guitar not go out of tune after all that whammying lol
JY
And I,m a Mormon.
@bearmare
That's nothing. Tommy Shaw turned into Cheryl Tiegs!!
I know he should of played lead more often
@Trashed20659 being silly?
That is a HORRIBLE thing to say. Both of them are happily married to women. I think they just enjoy each other's company.
That's the point. it's called relating to the audience, silly.
I`m waiting for his parents to come out and tell him to turn that shite down.
Gammy
Never liked this song but i suppose in a certain way it is a heavy metal classic
lady
Are you serious?! He's your NEIGHBOR!?!?
If you think Styx is better without Dennis you don't know Styx.
totally agree tommy and jy have their good moments but its dennis who is styx. great band
Sometimes you might not like a band at all but they might have a Killer,

Seriously, with no locking nut...lol
This song never really seemed to fit in with Dennis's ballads.Tommy and JY always wanted to rock, and dennis wrote all the ballads.
@manzanadecoco Edward Van Halen - Jerk, Neal Schon - Jerk, Stevie Ray Vaughan - Jerk...James Young? Not a jerk...
SRV a jerk? I've read and listened to a lot of interviews with him as well as heard stories from people who've met him and they all indicate that he was a genuinely nice, down to earth person.
man.......80s audiences were easy to please.
+hamtrak That's a bad thing?
+hamtrak That's because back in the 80's songs were well written and played with true passion. Nowadays the songs are shit and phony onstage personas and flashy onstage gimmicks are in.
If you can't say something nice, then don't say nothing at all.
they sure don't have much clothes sense
JY is a Jimi Hendrix wantabe
JY looks like a pipe smoker
