Let's see if the 1932 Morris Minor still runs!? Pre-war car tinkerings.

  • The first video here on the Old Classic Car channel many years ago was of the 1932 Morris Minor's engine running. That was a long time ago, so it seemed only sensible to see if it's compact four-cylinder sidevalve engine was still capable of running. We dug out a suitable 6v battery, a funnel, and a drop of go-go juice to try just that and see if the pre-war Minor would actually start. And if it started, how well would it run after little action in recent decades (I think it was last on the road in the early 1970s-ish). My youthful assistant dealt with the complex controls in the driver's compartment, while I busied myself with dirtier and (slightly) smellier fuel-related matters in the engine room of this 91yr-old car.
    I'm still pondering a further cull of old vehicles at OCC HQ in a bid to free up time and space for the A40's long-overdue rebuild, so nothing's really off the table on that score, bar the Dodges and MX5. I did moot the idea of parting with the Standard but that didn't prove popular in a certain quarter. Maybe the post-vintage Minor should go, or the Anglia, or perhaps even the Renault? All have their pro's and con's, not least the fact that Mrs OCC isn't too keen on driving either the Anglia or the 4CV. Hmmmm.
    Anyway, thanks so much for watching. If you're new here then - HELLO! - and please take a look at previous uploads and look out for more videos like this in future. If you're a regular, then thanks for sticking with us! Likes, subs and comments welcomed as always.

    I do find it wonderful that HJ shares your passion for these old cars and it is interesting to see that interest develop and expand. Many youngsters his age would have zero interest at all in them and just view them as piles of junk and show little or no curiosity in the history of these machines or how they work. When many young people are only interested in fashion and the latest iPhones etc, and I am not saying that HJ isn't also on the ball in those areas, it is refreshing to see classic cars are important to him. It is first class experience and a knowledge gaining learning curve for him for the future. I wish my kids were even remotely interested, their vision of a classic car is a 3 year old Audi A1. He is a credit to you. and Mrs. OCC.
    Now, it occurs to me that perhaps, just perhaps, a structured approach is needed RJ to tackle in an organised , structured and methodical way to get these vehicles all "fettled" and brought back to life. You do have a couple there that run the risk of drifting into obscurity. Good Video as always and the intro to it is creative.

      Thanks, I always wanted him to understand this old car thing, even if he wasn't as invested as I am. That way my stuff doesn't just end up in a skip when I shuffle off. Plus he gains an understanding of real things as opposed to the virtual world around us, and as a result we spend a lot time doing stuff together. I've also been very keen for him to pursue other hobbies that I have no involvement in, and fortunately that has happened so it keeps a balance.
      As for the non-runners, the plan as discussed last year was to move on a few projects and replace them with fewer runners that just need looking after. This worked partially but I've found myself having to spend a lot of time, more than anticipated, on the new arrivals. I should have expected it really. So just when I think I've cleared the decks a little to turn attentions to the A40, something else goes wrong elsewhere. What I really need to do is just reduce numbers.

    Such a great video, something about the beauty of simplicity. Your video reminds me so much about time spent with my dad in the 60's/70's in our driveway doing the weekly service on the family car. Then you could fix everything went technology was just a timing light and a screw driver stethoscope. Your son is getting a first class education on this and I give you both great respect as you both share and listen to each other... so wonderful!

    I'll be taking my 1932 Minor two-seater on a holiday from my home in Worcestershire to the Highlands in the next few months. It should take me two days to reach the area around Fort William. It's done 8,000 miles since it returned to the road at Christmas 2020.

    Most cars in the 1920s in my experience were negative earth and the switch came about around 1935 , certainly in the case of Austin .The reversion back to negative earth came about around 1971-2 , presumably in the hope of reducing electrolytic corrosion that was taking out so many cars of the period .I fully concur with Vince below , Harley is a credit to you and Mrs OCC !.Seeing this video reminds me of an identical occurance when I was Harley's age, attempting to start my Austin Ruby in the garden with my late dad, it was never filmed of course but still have the spool tape recording !.

    You just can't kill an old Morris Flathead, or most any Flathead for that matter. I had no doubt whatsoever that it would start.Sounds good. Great video!! Some of the old Ford's in 300 six or 302 eight's from the 70's used the old style short fat plugs although I'm not sure if they're the right heat range.

    Well done and really enjoyable to watch. It brought the memories flooding (forgive the pun!) back of my tinkering all those years ago before the emergence of electronic, digital mysteries under the bonnets of modern cars. Before electronic ignition my dad always told me not to leave the ignition on for too long with the engine not running in case the coil burned out. Do you agree? And do you ever bother to inject some lubricant into the cylinders before starting a long dormant engine? Hopefully Harley's involvement in these mechanical matters will make him able to tackle practical DIY jobs, rather than having to rely on 'tradesmen' as sadly seems to be the case with most modern youth.

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  Рік тому

      Yes I've sprayed a few things down the bores/valves while it's been parked up, and turned it over regularly by hand just to keep things moving a little. Yep the coil can burn out if the ignition is left on for too long. Thanks for watching as always.
