I'm so grateful to yeonmi, as a teen who has spent her whole life from the first moment to now in a first world country(at least I think America's first world), I can see I'm lucky, I used to be really jealous of my cousins born and brought up in Canada and India. I feel the same way about America, Canada and all the countries who give shelter to refugees and people in need and help, they take care of them and show them what love is. These countries give hope and restore trust in humanity and also love and value LIFE, period.

That’s the thing about some Americans I see today that drives me crazy, they take their freedom and rights for granted. They are so easily manipulated to hating the very country that gives them a far better life that they are unaware of the struggles outside of America in other countries. But one thing about our history, we wouldnt have any history if not for immigrants who came here looking for better. The opportunities we are able to offer come from that. The jobs, the diversity, the ability to get food, to celebrate your own culture, and religion, the laws all of that came from the understanding that we were all equal, because we all came here for the same purpose. Thats why people come here. It has nothing to do with our age as a country.

Excessive self-centered-ness may be what takes america down. Not being able to get beyond the beliefs of your neighbors, not feeling like a cohesive group that looks out for their neighbors will allow outsiders to divide us and make waste of the society, making America weak. There needs to be a balance of individualism and love for neighbors and country. There needs to be less us/them, me me me.

I'm so grateful to yeonmi, as a teen who has spent her whole life from the first moment to now in a first world country(at least I think America's first world), I can see I'm lucky, I used to be really jealous of my cousins born and brought up in Canada and India. I mean my dad came to the US 3years before I was born and my mom like 2 years before I was born. Why couldn't they have stayed in India or went to Canada, so my sister and I could live happily?? at least I ain't born in North Korea but instead in the third most populous country. I feel way less depressed and wow, yeonmi is really empowering.
As a Cuban, I can confirm what she's saying. A lot of my friends (and me soon) live in EEUU and things like go out with whatever clothe you want without being judge or catcalled, go out with headphones vibing with the music without being robbed and just living without anxiety and with freedom is AMAZING and practically IMPOSSIBLE in this country. You can even choose your education (wich is impossible here) and you can choose wich people you want around you. You can just LIVE. This girl is totally right when she said that EEUU is a hope for humanity. Is heartbreaking that you have to scape just to have rights and the minimum respect as a person but that's our reality, and I really thankfull that at least theres a place we can go to to scape this hell.
