I always wear Safety glasses when I'm soldering. I had some rosin core solder Pop once and spit a tiny piece of solder onto my cheek. I also set up a Fan close to my workbench to keep the lead fumes away from me.
What have you done with your hair George???? Nice job Mac" ! Is that a Weller soldering station ? A great tip on de-soldering using flux, that is not often shown and makes a huge difference. Also I changed the standard tip on my Weller Iron to a smaller one , much better especially for working on decoders installed in locos. Cheers Gregg.
Hey Gregg! Love your videos. That does look like a Weller soldering station. Perhaps the WES51. I have the same station and it is an amazing one at that.
@@capnsean520 Hi Sean , thank you ! I also have that one and just got some finer tips for it, the standard one is a little too big for fine work , but they are a great Iron, and Aussie made at that! Cheers Gregg.
@@FishplateFilms Same here. I just bought the finest tip I could find and have been doing so many decoder installations. They're especially helpful for those tight spots or soldering SMD LEDs! Sean
Great tutorial. You make it look so easy. However, I am a novice and klutz at soldering. I wish you had also shown what you did every time you said you cleaned your soldering iron. That also would have been very helpful for me. You make it look so easy!!!
This was one of my 1st times soldering, if I can do it you can! When I cleaned the soldering iron I just wiped the tip on a moist sponge. I think the hardest part for people is having a steady hand. If you can do that its a breeze!
-Here’s the Flux George uses at home: www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/chip-quik-inc/SMD291NL/SMD291NL-ND/1160000 It’s about $12 per ‘syringe’ The stuff we have here is Alpha OM-338. You can search online or here’s a link to a random website: www.solderconnection.com/P1186/ALPHA-OM338-LEAD-FREE-FLUX-GEL.html Because it’s an industrial use flux, most of the links want you to contact them for quotes.
Great video! I still have to get a soldering station for my workbench when i install your dcc mobile and sound decoders. Still using my weller 25watt iron that is my only one i have. There are 3 LEDs that illuminate what I am working on. Also know that I only use soundtraxx decoders in all my dcc installs! I also have many athearn gen and rtr with tsunami2 and economi factory installed! Love your guys products! Daniel
I'm sorry that link doesn't work anymore. This is an industrial flux so it is difficult for an individual to get a small supply. Here’s the Flux George uses at home: www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/chip-quik-inc/SMD291NL/SMD291NL-ND/1160000 It’s about $12 per ‘syringe’
Soldering with soldering iron from stone age... If you buy modern soldering iron in pen size with thin tip, everything is much easier. Also use 3rd hand tool instead of clip. Everything then goes alone and you reach high quality connections.
"Max"... the soldering iron used might not be as hi tech as you require, but I'd say McKenzie did a fine job, with good quality on her soldered connections.
@@marklewis298 Poor old "Max" , he doesn't know the peg protects the board while holding it unlike a third hand tool that has sharp metal clips? Also, that is a professional soldering station and it looks "modern" to me ...but then again I'm old and have only installed about 100 decoders ..LOL. Your right Mark , Mc Kenzie did a good job and is easier to look at than George..LOL.. Sorry George ..only kiddin' ! Gregg.
There are a lot of different kinds of soldering irons out there. Use the one that is comfortable for you and works for the job you are doing. :) Thanks for the feedback.

Great tutorial, McKenzie. Looking forward to more in this series.

I like the cloths pin idea
It comes in handy for sure!
Amazing tutorial! Learned a lot!
Thank you!

@@capnsean520 Yes , I haven't used my new tips yet, only got them a week ago.
This is just what it looks like when George misses a few hair cuts :D haha. Yes our soldering station is a weller with a fine tip on it.
I had no idea you could de-shoulder something, thanks for the tips

I'm interested in the flux you used, where to get it and the type you used ? Loved the video thank you

Thanks for the feedback and for being a loyal customer! We appreciate you. :D
Thanks McKenzie, Very Helpful. Bear🐾Creek🚂RR, KY.
Thanks for watching we are glad that you enjoyed it
I use 60/40 rosin core solder so the extra step of applying flux is not necessary and makes it faster. .
We still recommend flux. It is a great tool! And it does not add much time to your install.
Where can the syringe type flux like Alpha OM338 be found. Used link for Soundtrax other post and comes up unavailable.

Hey can you install a speaker to the MC2H104AT just wondering
No. It doesn't have the tabs on the pcb nor does it have the sound files.
Why do you guys in the US pronounce solder - soder?????
I don't know, that's just how we learn it.
