I find it funny how most folktales were probably just a wild story that people came up with to cover up something stupid and people just bought it because they believed in magic back then.
My favorite kitsune tale is this: There was a young kitsune playing small tricks on ppl in a bamboo groove like cutting their hair or making them carry heavy weights, something like this, until the village organize themselves to hunt and outsmart this fox, they cornered into a room with paintings of the twelve lunar zodiac and noticed one of the paintings had a tail, so they got the kitsune and killed it. Hey Linfamy! When are you going to continue doing History of Japan? Can't wait for your detailed and humorous explanation of Sengoku and Bakumatsu eras respectively.
There are actually multiple versions of the fox spirit myths in China. The normal single tailed fox spirit and the infamous Nine Tailed Fox spirit. The latter is actually a unique entity who served the creation Goddess Nuwa. The nine tailed fox is featured as one of the main antagonist in the classic Chinese novel, "Fengshen Yanyi" or "Houshin Engi" as it's pronounced in Japanese. In the novel, she possessed the Shang Dynasty's last king's concubine, Daji and used her form to encouraged him to do evil stuff, leading to his downfall. The oldest depiction of the nine tailed fox, however, is in 山海經. In it, the nine tailed fox is not considered a spirit, but an actual animal and an auspicious omen. The regular fox spirit can be good, evil or anywhere in between, it really depends on the storyteller and the version of the story.
Thanks for good contents as always ;) I want more Kitsune stories from you! Don't you talk about Soutan kitsune, who pretend to be a famous tea master? He even hosted tea party instead of real Soutan!
One lesser known kitsune tale I like involved a mischievous fox who liked to scare local villagers. One night, the fox was caught by a merchant who threatened to burn it if it didn't knock it off with the pranks. The fox agreed that if the merchant let it go, it would send a daimyo's procession to reward him with gold and jewelry beyond his wildest dreams. So the merchant let the fox go. Sure enough, he saw a daimyo procession outside his window the next day and rushed over demanding his reward of gold and jewelry. Turns out, it was ACTUALLY a real daimyo passing by who did not appreciate some rando trying to pinch his money and arrested the merchant on the spot. Whoops.
