Thanks mate,, I would be interested in how you transition to the underside. I do a lot of industrial repair work and my welds tend to get ugly on the underside.
Question from an old pipe welder, but not a pipeliner: Are all pipeline welds 6010 downhill? I've always done the root & hot pass with 5p or 5p+ uphill, then fill & cap with 7018 (uphill, of course). I can run 6010 downhill, but I've always heard uphill is stronger... you know how pipe welders are... their way is the only way, right? 😅
Not all pipeline welds are 6010 downhill. While it's a common technique, there's flexibility in methods. Uphill can be strong too. Ultimately, the best method depends on the specific job and welder preference.
Most pipelines use a 6010 for the bead then 8010 (arc 80’s) fill and cap…… some gas companies are going to a low/high rod downhand 9045dh…… minimizes the heat heat input especially on higher grade pipe x60 or x70 pipe
For everyone who's wondering, you can make good money locally you don't have to travel. Local - 40-60$ hr Pipeline travel - 70-100$ hr Welding is a good job to have cause you can go get certified an your job search increases
Running the pipeline is the easy part there alot of other things to be done building reg stations alot of time in vaults with limited space nice when there above grounds also some very large to very small meter sets and the repair work the pipe lining is the cake
Rod size and amperage depend on metal thickness and desired weld quality. Generally, thicker metal requires larger rods and higher amperage. Welding charts can provide specific guidelines, but experience and experimentation are also crucial.
@@WesternWeldingAcademy indeed im a regular welder i never worked on piping just on regular low pressure vessel like oil and fuel tank thanks for the info :)

That is so strange to me that you weld downhill. Is this a "by the book" thing over there in America? Maybe you guys could do a video with about busting myths around downhill welding. The conventional wisdom says it's not as "strong". My instinct says that downhill is a bad idea when you're doing filets og grooves. He mentions $75-80 dollars per hour. Now who owns the welding machine and rods and the rest of the equipment and consumables? The person welding or the company that hired the person??
Depends on company but usually person owns the rig(truck/machine) sometimes you can single hand and use company rig, As for the consumables usually companies provide those especially if they want specific rods being used but a lot of times you’ll also have to provide your own just depends on the company
The welder provides his own equipment. They are responsible for welding only. They have a helper that travels with them, and does all the preparation and cleaning.
@Eternity_of_Darkness thanks. I’m trying to get a realistic perception of everything that is involved with making that wage. Making that amount of money isn’t really as lucrative when there’s 50k-100k of equipment that one will have to own/buy to be able to properly do those jobs. Thanks again
You’re right, it’s not a TIG weld, however my point is, is doesn’t have to look perfect to pass. The short filler pass on the concavity location, in the test zone, could make or break a passing grade to a novice. I’ve caught slag 3 times before passing my first API 1104 cert. would have been nice to have had this kind of information accessible in the in 1980’s.
