At first I was disappointed this was not one of the non-live MVs.. but as soon as Ian started playing.. and Jimmy started singing.. I was glad this video was posted.. they were as good live as they were in the studio.. not many bands like that any more..
Just saw Chisel in Perth on their 50th Anniversary tour. Dang they were so, so great. Still have it all. Proved why they have been voted Australia’s number one band in 2024, 51 years after they started. 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Jimmy, Ian, Phil and Don … luv ya all. RIP Steve 🕊
Great songs shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will still sing them.
My parents owned sweethearts back in the day and to see the boys coming down was and always will be one of my fondest memories ever. Sweethearts was across the road from Macdonalds and big John the bikie the leader of the pack.... Ahhh the cross and the memories... Thanks Jimmy
If there had been the Internet in the Early 80s Cold Chisel would have been one of the biggest bands in the World. Keep up the good work nzoz with your videos
You just told my life story...I was the DJ at the Manzil Room.. when I started I was given a pair of Ray-Bans... it was always daylight when we finished !!! That and a job at DOUBLE JAY RADIO... Hottest music - hottest life !!!!! - Great memories of a golden age of aussie music !!!
"Sweethearts" was a cafè in Kings Cross, Sydney, Australia in the 1970s and 1980s, but has since been demolished. It was located where the present-day McDonald's is now, in the middle of Kings Cross.[2] The song "Plaza" refers to Sydney's Plaza Hotel, where Don Walker was living in Kings Cross at the time.[2] Walker later said, "As a whole set of songs, it painted a picture of a certain time and a certain place which is very close to my heart. And in many ways that set of songs is quite personal to me rather than any of the other guys because they all moved out of the Cross within three weeks. It was a good time of my life."[3] Author Louis Nowra described the song "Breakfast at Sweethearts" as, "the most immediately identifiable song about the Cross."[4] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakfast_at_Sweethearts
...and there was the time we were 3am chilling with a couple of friends who worked the street, (Sweethearts was a safe haven for working girls to take a break and for us musos who were wired after gigs), and we commented how much the bloke on his own at the back looked like Bowie. Next day David Bowie was quoted in the newspaper saying how he'd enjoyed coffee and people watching at a little joint called Sweethearts. Damn! Missed a chance there.
@nzoz1979 As I have said before (maybe a year or so ago) need to nominate you for the Order Of Australia, or Australian of the Year! I grew up in the 90s in Hong Kong to expat parents who loved Chisels despite the pom, local and yank neighbors. These songs remind me of summers in a beauty of a place call the New Territories in Hong Kong. I remember going to some wanker international school in Dads car and he would have chisels blaring at full bore and hell everyone knew who it was! Love it!
he only coughed up blood after A gig (or 2) around the last stand time because he had a throat infection of some description... the way he screams (as you micko0101 says... the good way), he warms up properly, he has the range, he has FULL control over his voice... without a doubt he CAN SING
some of the bohemians are still around or at least were about 5 or 6 years ago. if you want to find the bohemian / unique side of darlinghurst and potts point you have to go off the beaten track, definitely not darlinghurst or bayswater rds. But its mostly just style, not really a scene / people
I've actually had breakfast at Sweethearts, it was on the corner opposite 'Les Girls'. The place to go in those days was 'The Manzil Room'... I remember spilling out of there at 5am, what else to do then... have breakfast at Sweethearts. They made a really nice 'hot bananas and ice cream', but that was munchies BEFORE going to The Manzil Room... One of Jim's favourite places to go after a gig... aaah, the memories (actually don't remember much of those nights ;)~ heh heh heh...
I'm writing to Marianne , she's in a lot of pain today, and we have some hilarious memories from this place, special things that we can laugh about today ,
Sweethearts, never been there, was too young, but apparently it was where the train station is now on Darlinghurst Road,. The Bourbon and Beefsteak took over it's role in the 80's and 90s, similar scene with loud music.
18 years old 1971, 1st beer in Kings Cross 10 oz handle 26 cents. $10 could get me pissed and walking back to my ship in time to sling my hammock and sleep until wakey wakey @ 6am. Pack of 20 smokes 12 cents on board and yes we dined there and the Bourbon and Beefsteak on Sundays looking for early openers down at Wooloomooloo. Watto Bat Pub Sunday Arvo and Doyles for fish and chips and Lady Jane Beach perving on all the topless women being taken away by the cops. Oh man what memories and dipping in the alamien fountain just for fun.
John farnham himself said that one of the peaks of his life was singing when the war is over with jimmy (jimmy sung the part he normally does). he (farnham) said he got a bigger treat out of it than the crowd would have... (and look at JB now - 9 solo no. 1 albums? plus... 4 or 5 with chisel?
Oh man, I remember coming out of The Manzil Room 6:00am, shielding my eyes from the urrrk 'brightness'... it was only a short walk up to Sweethearts, straight opposite from 'Les Girls'. Aaaahh hot chocolate and cinnamon toast cleansed the palate, hehe... felt like doing it all again then. Mind you, I was actually back where I started 10hrs earlier... eating the other Sweethearts 'special'... Hot Bananas and Ice cream... lol
@naganokumas very astute observation.thanks, its a bit of an acquired taste but once you get into the spirit of the music, totally unique and addictive
What I'd give to see them like this again.. Not with the modern sound like an angle grinder Barnsey. nor with his kids... Just Chisel. Another song from round when i was leaving school... No plans for life, just take it as it comes, school is nearly over, enjoy life, make the most of it... Shame we never really knew what life and the future had in store for us... ... or music. Thanks NZOZ, another winner.. Hook up for a coffee sometime.
and about wilson pickett, try: land of 1000 dances, i found a love. Otis Redding - respect and also to love somebody... (otis didnt record as he died) Jimmy covered these bloody well as the absolute undisputed aussie music legend he is! (response to micko0101)
You can tell all the people who never went to Sweethearts... Theyre talking about The Cross...Sweethearts was at Cabramatta... Just at the very start of the big heroin run..

1st thx nzoz1979 for post , Sweethearts was across the road from Maccas , thin long coffee ,pastire ,shop , deals done down the back , circa82-3,
...and there was the time we were 3am chilling with a couple of friends who worked the street, (Sweethearts was a safe haven for working girls to take a break and for us musos who were wired after gigs), and we commented how much the bloke on his own at the back looked like Bowie.
