One of the foremost scholars of the Pakistan army and the brother of former Pakistan Army Chief Gen. Asif Nawaz Janjua, Shuja Nawaz, analyses the challenge Imran Khan has posed to Army Chief Gen. Bajwa, the ISI and the army as an institution. He reflects on the army’s response and whether that has created differences within this critical institution. He also comments on how the army will handle the situation if there is violence when Imran Khan’s long march reaches Islamabad. In that context, what are the stark choices facing the Pakistan army? And, finally, is there a danger of another army takeover, whether under the present army chief or the new one who is yet to be appointed but will take over at the end of this month. - Розваги
Clearly, Shuja Nawaz is an Army's man and hence does not support IK's efforts against corruption in the Army.
Agree
You don't know a damn about Imran khan he is the biggest puppet of military in the history of Pakistan . He is still striving for the support of the military . The people who do not have know how of the history of Pakistan's politics are branding Imran khan as anti establishment .
Agree, he is boot licking for the sake of launching his "book"- the old man's last source of income or recognition 😁
Shuja Nawaz is completely detached from reality, never heard of him before. Please get more balanced guests on in the future, this was a completely lopsided interview against IK.
Nitin you are a smart man and absolutely right!
Shuja Nawaz is the mouthpiece of the ISPR (unaware of what's going on the streets of Pakistan)
So true
I felt same
In any other country, if there is a difference of opinion between a head of the government and head of military, the military man goes home. But in Pakistan, it is the other way around.
Shuja thinks army is disciplined and bloody and inferrior civilian are not.
So Army had to throw him out.
Shame on even such low mentality superiority complex generals.
SHAMELESS PAK ARMY . THIS NUISANCE ARMY , THEY'RE MURDERERS , THEY EVEN HANGED MR Zulfi BATTO , THEY'RE MURDERS
Indian media loves to invite anti Imran Khan people.
Clearly Shuja Nawaz is speaking his new masters voice that of the US. The Pak Army often dubbed as 'rogue' is a darling against Imran Khan.
I do endorse your views about this man shuja nawaz
27:00- Karan, your next question to Shuja when he said it’s very unlikely that he may win a majority in next elections, should have been how did Imran win 6 seats out of the 7 seats he contested in recent by elections from different constituencies of the country against 13 opposition party alliance & without military support. Imran’s party PTI has been on a winning spree in provincial by election seats as well, a total of almost 29 wins of 35 seats. It’s not a question of simple majority but a combined strategy of all opposition forces to deny PTI a 2/3 majority. That’s what everyone is afraid of.
Imran Khan also won the Kurram seat later on, making it 7 in total
It was quite obvious that he alluded to the possibility of the Army interfering this time to prevent IK win a majority
Exactly. Seems Karan has joined the 'Neutrals' 🤪
Karan Thapar is the most agenda ridden journalist you can find in India. He thinks he is too clever to lead his subject to where he wants to lead them, or he can bully them to that effect. This has been his style and motto ever since he came to the scene in the mid 80s in Rajeev Gandhi’s India. He wouldn’t ask this question as it doesn’t suit his agenda. Similarly, he quietly accepted Nawaz’s arguments that religious fundamentalism is sustained in Pakistan for the right wing turn in India whereas this could easily be the other way around. Thapar never examined this view of Nawaz as this is precisely what he wants his subjects to tell for the general people to believe. That’s why he is a cretin!
Pakistanis whose lives are directly impacted by the unfolding events in their country, hold their own, very clear, distinct, and justifiable opinions as compared to those of Mr. Shuja Nawaz. He analyses the situation mainly from an academic’s mindset and perspective, living and working in America for many years now, far removed from the everyday problems and hardships of ordinary Pakistanis.
Exactly Imran khan is more popular than Bhutto.
Lol bhutto had more support than Imran? Joke of the century. The army hanged Bhutto openly and no can came out to protest. Whereas IK is openly threatening the ISI cheif, why? Because he has the people support and army is scared of him
TRUE ... BUTTO WAS HANGED INNOCENT ...! ZIA HAQ N ARMY WAS BEHIND . SO HE N ARMY ARE MURDERERS . IMRAN KHAN IS DEFINITELY GREAT . SHAME PAKISTAN ARMY
you are right
Yes and bhutto knew that our awam won’t stand up for him and before he died he said to tell my coward awam of this country this is what happens to a bahadur leader. Well I’m glad that the awam won’t make the same mistake again and must stick with imran khan
For Bhutto many people burn themselves alive when he was hanged many people of Pakistan faced jails prisons & torture and many other problems during 77 to 1988 time
aare ruuk yarr ruuk. Thoda time de. Itna jaaldi nahin kaarte... Naya Army chief ko aane de 29th ko... IK ko bhi Faansi hi milegi...
Dekh ta reh. Bhutto seh bhi battar halat hoga iskaa. Fauj chup hai iska matlab yeh nahin hai ke woh Bharwan hai. Action legi Fauj
When it comes to Pakistan, are the Indian liberal platforms any better? Karan Thapar every now and then invites Pakistanis, ostensibly to inform his viewers on the current political situation in Pakistan. And for that he invites people like Hussain Haqqani, Najam Sethi and this guy, people having publicly known hostile views on Imran Khan. If he really wants to inform his viewers on Pakistan, he can engage with people with diverse views as well. But that is not the purpose. Imran Khan is still known in India. Tapping into hate for him is profitable.
Wire is anti IK and anti Modi as simple as that
Please dont bring in silly conspiracy theories everywhere. Karan invites whoever he trusts to be well informed, intelligent & objective. You may disagree with his choices but that doesn't mean he has any agenda. Sensinle Indians are not like Pakistanis.
That's right. Liberal or not, you can never expect an Indian (especially in media) to provide an objective unbiased picture of Pakistan.
It is ironic that in extremist Modi India, any difference of opinion is not tolerated or considered, where as if people in authority sincerely wish to resolve disputes in the interest of & for the good of people, peace, prosparity & harmony, they have great opportunity in visionary Imran Khan.
Shuja Nawaz is an authority on Pakistan army and matters related to the Army. You can't discuss Pakistani politics without having expert insight into Army's viewpoint.
Shuja showing stupidity. He is living in 1990. He shoould take rest now instead talking nonsense.
Hi Karan this is your 3rd show I am watching about Imran .in three months, but unfortunately all are Imran haters
Sir please , bring someone from the other side of isle as well ...
Thanks
Suja nawaj tried his best to look Pakistan army good towards Indian audiences. It's understandable. His brother was a army chief and he himself belongs to high political class who rule Pakistan whimsically
Excellent interview again. Questions were most pertinent. Shuja Nawaz is an eloquent speaker.
Unfortunately, I found him highly pro army, all his answers were tilted to portray good face of army.
The challenge put forth by Imran Khan, is to limit the role of military, only to look after the affairs that has been assigned to them in Pakistan's constitution. This narrative has become very popular among the masses, and a reality which can't be denied.
Karan seems to have gone overboard in introducing Shuja Nawaz and his books, "The Crossed Swords ..." & "The Battle for Pakistan". Both these books represent a sanitized & uncritical perspective of Pakistan's most powerful institution of which his brother was Chief a few decades ago. What stood out in his narrative is his anxiety to rationalize the trends and events in Pakistan's polity that are seen by other scholars as abnormal and repugnant.
Yes, True.
shuja nawaz is giving vibes more of a military establishment spokesperson than an indepedant voice
Sorry to hear from Shuja Nawaz ..expected some truth.i am your college mate but was junior to you. A courageous man that you are..
Sorry to say this Shahjee sahib but Shuja Nawaz has blinders on and cannot see the reality on the ground. He is towing the US line. I guess he wants to continue his cushy life in Washington.
This interview is for army people to reassure them what the army is doing is right. ISI is trying its best to build rapport which it lost. If this guy is right and Army is so good, then why did we lose east Pakistan? They hanged Bhutto without thinking about the future. Then went to Afghanistan without thinking about the future. Same in Musharaf time.
@12:12 Pakistan Army, the most popular force in the country? Lol!
I think he has not visited Pakistan since last 7 months.
Army is not anymore the most popular force. It's Imran khan the most popular.
I think, he meant political force
Mr. Shuja Nawaz comments appear like he is absolutely unaware of ground reality in Pakistan.
He is telling Pundits are not correct. His statement suits on himself.
Masses of Pakistan are with IK and PTI expected to win 2/3 majority
Why people of Pakistan are poor whereas army personnel (brigadier and above) rich??
Same argument applies to India too
@@fh8047 not at all
@@fh8047 😂😂 are you serious?!....do you even know about agniveeer scheme....? 😂😂
He is trying hard to fire fight for the army. Infact Pak army & ISI is very scared of Imran coz of current situation. Imran wanna topple this government or make a deal before Bajwa retires . Because once Bajwa retires the PM should appoint a new chief and that chief ll be loyal to Sharif & that ll be a trouble for Imran
Shuja appreciates president for being impartial but shamefully he did not comment anything for Bajwa for not being impartial.
People of Pakistan, especially majority province Punjab, were never so much against army's involvment in politics in Bhutto 'era.
Imran khan is a bigger force than Bhutto.
He may not have government in sindh or Balochistan, but he is extremely popular among the majority of Pakistan.
Is that less popularity??
Seeing shuja nawaz defending bajwa and pak army is like a seeing a mouse singing praises of the cat. Something is not right.
Him, not being in Pakistan how he can honestly opine on the political changes in Pakistan.
Karan you are such a fine journalist but why do you invite anti Imran people? I get it India does not like Imran but dont you think one sided view will only mis lead your audience from the ground realities?
Misleading people is his mission
@@amnazubair73 Exactly!
Same he does in case of India too , always brings anti Modi agenda here
@27:20 If you say that Imran khan will not win next elections because he does not have support of Army, ISI and election commission, then how did Imran khan win by elections in October last month??
He won 29 seats out of 35 despite all other parties having one common candidate and support of ISI, Army & partial election commission.
You have a very absurd argument.
he is saying that military Generals will rig next election massively making sure imran khan does not win next election
Karan, please interview Imran Khan once, you can have answers to all blames these Generals putting on IK.
Don't think IK would withstand the scrutuny of Karan questioning, looking at his interview with the CNN.
yes
Shuja Nawaz seems to be the mouthpiece of ISPR. Clearly not as well clued into the sentiments and opinions of Pakistanis on ground today.
The bi-election results alongside the massive jalsas up and down the country leave no doubt that Imran Khan and his narrative is popular.
Shuja wants us to believe that the Pakistan Army is an extremely disciplined force and all their generals are highly professional & knights in the shining armour. What's the problem then?
Yes he is ! ,,
The most honest, dynamic, intelligent and the bravest leader they've had after Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto
After Najam Sethi,Asad Durrani and Shuja Nawaz now Karan should invite Ayesha Saddiqa to dissect civil military relations in Pakistan
Hahahahahaha
SARCASM 101
👍🙊
🤣🤣🤣
Karan plz come to Pakistan and take interview of Imran in person, have some hard talk with him, then meet DG ISPR take his version and in the end meet Najam Sethi your favorite guest whom u called every time to know about situation of Pakistan and after that call to Hussain haqqani also to know his well reputed and insightful opinion about current turmoil
Keen observers of the Pakistan situation can see a colossal people’s uprising. It is a people’s peaceful revolution, because their patience has run out and they will not be silenced by any power, internal or external, until they achieve their long denied rights, rule of law and early elections to enable them to choose leaders who are their genuine representatives in decision making positions. Nothing can stand against the people’s power and resolve. Simply stated, the people want an end to autocratic and dictatorial rule in the name of democracy.
well said
Total absurd and unawre of the ground reality ,live in 70' and 80's
For India in short term, we should be wary of any Pak misadventure to distract from domestic issues, should the situation within escalate. In mid to long term, be prepared to engage with a strong, assertive and right wing 'democratic' dispensation under Imran Khan.
Another PARTISON interview by Mr Thapar.
Perhaps Mr Shuja Nawaz can tell how his brother General Asif Nawaz was killed, & by who?
Karan sir should interview IK
One correction. Imran Khan never criticised the Pak Army, NEVER. He criticises some generals, who are responsible for the current deplorable plight, the country is in.
That's not true. He blamed the entire army for the Bangladeshi partition.
Why on the first place, is Army standing there to which Shuja thinks Imran Khan doesn't have enough support from people?
Army has no business in politics and especially bringing corrupt and controllable elements in the government.
Why Army doesn't let free elections take place to let people decide who has support whether Imran Khan or others?
So please don't play Army's puppet to verdict who has country wide support.
In Pakistan is respect and righteousness belongs to all (Army, Courts, other all government organs), except people of Pakistan. The actual culprit are power greedy army generals, including this one.
Respect will of people and stop standing to a place which this ex general thinks against no people representative can stand.
IN hindsight Mr Shuja opinion is very contradictory to pak army narrative. First of all, there is no divide between Army ranks. Secondly, IMRAN KHAN March to Islamabad is a revolutionary march which will bring about true 'Democracy' as the majority of people are rejecting the imported government. In the context of early elections, the world will see Pakistan rise again, and our institutions will be more progressive than ever before.
Buttering all the generals!
Karan Thapar , Love From Pakistan , I always tried to spare time to watch your interviews ,
It appears that we are more concerned about Pakistan than India.
Here mr.Shuja is totally wrong that young Pakistanis don't hate the political role of the Army. Almost everyone of them does.
Pak army feels Imran is still in control so they are ignoring Imran slightly.....when push will come to the shove army will do the same what they did with Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.
Imran Khan being against the army has to pay the price. Very soon He will be eliminated, because he is real threat to most disciplined and powerful political party. Do you what I mean? I think you do.
According to this genius ..neither Imran Khan Has nation backing not young people support nor majority of army rank and file support .....then why is army and pdm not calling elections to call Imran Khan popularity bluff?
They don’t know about ground situation and that’s why they do miscalculation about Pakistan people and know they have no control in Pakistan
I stopped watching this after a few minutes as Shujaat Nawaz is talking nonsense. There was no social media in ZABs time…the Army has no support among the masses now. So, the outcome will be different from the past. Shuja Nawaz is supposed to be an expert but he is talking complete nonsense.
Bajwa is controlled by his father in law who is part of a nexus including Aleem Khan and other property and land mafia.
Exactly.
But i would also appreciate him for admitting that ISI, Army & election commission manipulate Elections by changing loyalities of candidates and possibly through Fake votes.
He is the brother of former army chief and has actually admitted clearly that Army has deep involvement in political affairs of Pakistan.
Yes it was a shocking waste of time
Asim Munir was removed due to a direct complaint from the Iranians where he misbehaved with the Iranian officials on border tensions during his Bajwa's visit to Iran.
Sir my request to you to please ask Imran khan to give him a chance to defend himself . As my understanding you both know each other personally for over 30 years .
This. Man has no idea about Pakistan ground situation if you minus imran Khan you must minus everything because no hope for Pakistan justice
Organised institution it is, but to what purpose ? Shuja Nawaz sahab has skillfully defended all their weaknesses and downright lies. The fact is that Imran is loved by the rank and file of the army. If Imran were'nt popular within the armed forces, he would have been history. And one more thing Karan sahab, Imran Khan is by far the most popular leader in Pakistan's history and he has certainly eclipsed the popularity of ZAB. There is no doubt that Imran comes from a bourgeois background and has the paraphernalia not only to be part of the elitist culture, but to stand head and shoulders above the elite class. However he went through a genuine transformation and became an aberration to the status quo. The army's plan to foist just another invented leader went haywire at a certain stage and turned into a violent personality clash. Please remeber that there would be hardly anyone in the military brass who reads Tolstoy, Pushkin or Dostoyevsky ! There certainly is a human side to everything.
The most pertinent and truthful comment of Nawaz sahab is about getting someone for the interim government from within.
Army used to be more popular than political leaders or parties. These old fellows dont understand that it has changed. People love and trust Imran Khan and him alone. Army has lost its credibility in the eyes of majority Pakistanis. Time for old army men to wake up from ur dreams!
🇵🇰 Excellent 👏
🇵🇰 🤝 🇮🇳
🇵🇰 Best wishes from Pakistan 🤲
Shuja's had a tilt towards army. Still a good talk as always used to be at this platform.
Karan Sahaab,
Kindly interview someone who is not biased , suja nawaz, najam sethi they have a tilt towards the strongest institution in pakistan
Shuja Nawaz doesn’t seem to be aware of the grassroots situation prevailing in the country. He seems to be biased.
The central question before Pakistanis is the role of the army in its political affairs. That will not change with a new army chief and we have history to prove this right. At this time we cannot afford a new army chief without any change in the governing structure.
What Nawaz Sharif is up to is not as important as finding a solution to a governing structure for the country.
I had proposed a governing council comprising of civil and military to run the affairs of the country till the political situation stabilized or a national government comprising all walks of political life and professional technocrats to take charge.
If Imran Khan succeeds which does not seem likely to me, we have not changed the system and the army is still there to thwart him.
Bajwa is still holding the fort and we may deteriorate like Iraq, Libya and Egypt in our governance if we insist on a change on 29 November without shoring up the planks of our house first.
I respect Shuja for his books, but the fact that he not been in Pakistan for the last 3 years. He's clearly way far from current ground relaities. People all across Pakistan are supporting IK from farmers to industrialists. Why? They earned alot during IK's govt and during 6 months the country's economy is at halt & worst inflation ever in Pak's history. He's acting as Zardari's mouthpiece
Dear free n fair election is the only answer for political stability n economic stability
Not surprised to see PTI supporters criticising Shuja Nawaz. And those Indian friends in comments section, please read his books to understand what he wants to say in this interview.
P.S. Karan Thapar sahib, thank you so much for putting intelligent questions to Shuja Nawaz 🙏
Thanks!
thankyou Karan for a good interview and relevant questions without any snide remarks which are typical of Pak India discussion.
it was great to see that the gest was allowed to speak without being interrupted with another volley of questions.
But really nice question but the answer is like he know nothing about Pakistan
General sahir shamshad mirza is the only General who worked as DG MO as well as chief of General Staff after Gihangeer karamat
This is where the fault line lies, as the army, think a most disciplined force. But in reality, it has the political wing of ISI through wish they try every best to disrupt the political system through different tactics like coerce, intimidation, torturing, kidnaping,of political parties members. A very patriotic journalist has been killed by this our very own disciplined force.we have seen the worst kind of dictatorship in last six month.Need to end this drama and army should be held accountable for their unconstitutional activities.
👌👍
Very informative, Impartial and to the point discussion. Well done. Keep it up.
In what capacity ISI cheif took instruction from COAS as isi cheif comes under PM as by constitution
Kindly invite Dr Moeed Pirzada on your show..
Moeed Pirzada in place of Shuja Nawaz? Looks like a toss up between Tweedledee & Tweedledum > The former is a PRO of Imran Khan while the latter is an unofficial spokesman of the Pakistan Army.
@@srinathmitta661 His views may be inclined towards IK but he is a very learned person who talks about democracy all the time..

How Imran won 7 out of 9 seats . Nawaz is clearly Army man
Great interview. Right on point.
Problem with Imran Khan : Imagine Imran : if he had 3 good slip fielders.
That's the story of our country !! Blind folded and throwing darts to hit the target...
An excellent interview. Mr Shuja Nawaz is, indeed, one of the most well informed authorities on Pakistan Army. I have two observations to make on his statement.
One, that appointing DG ISI is the exclusive prerogative of the PM. In the past, Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto have appointed the DGs ISI of their choice, not that of the COAS. Nawaz Sharif appointed LG Ziauddin Butt and LG Naveed Mukhtar, and BB appointed LG Rtd Shamsur Rehman Kallu as DGs ISI, without recommendation of the COAS. Why should Gen Bajwa get offended abt IK not accepting his advice on DG ISI. As per which law, rules did Gen Bajwa appoint Gen Anjum as DG ISI without approval of PM. In fact, it is the PM who appoints the DG ISI, without any input from COAS.
Two, everybody knows that NAB is not under the PM and takes orders from elsewhere.
CHOOZAA
Sadly Shuja Nawaz is slightly out of touch with the current realities on ground in Pakistan.
Recent events strengthen the thesis that 'Pakistan Needs a Peoples Army and NOT Rent-a-General Enslaved Mercenaries'. Army has long lost its Professional dignity and Honor due to persistent history of meddling into Political Engineering- for evidence Retd Gen Durrani gave an affidavit in front of Supreme Court in famous Asghar Khan Case.
Army needs reform: so that its elite is not above law; any dispute on promotions should be given right of appeal in Supreme Court; Its Officers and Soldiers be able to live as Free Citizens after retirement without fear of repressive measures or have their pensions stopped for partaking in national politics.
The Elites of this Army do not consider Corruption as a serious issue.
Army should serve interest of people of Pakistan and not protect the Corrupt Few.
Sadly Shuja Nawaz is slightly out of touch with the current realities on ground in Pakistan.
Great summing up .You are being very polite by saying slightly
excellent interview
Shuja Nawaz represents the type who have led Pakistan to its current mess.
Rather than bringing this fellow on, might as well have called an official army spokesman
Now karan has done 2 interviews with bery anti imran people, he should get someone from the pti side too
What's the point of interviewing Shuja Nawaz? Confirmation bias?
Host is so smart and highly educated 👏 deep questions.
Shuja Nawaz speaks well. His brother was the military chief and he lives in the US. Whose interests would you expect him to support?
Old man stuck in 1990's .. and watch too much Geo news.
Karan always invite people who hates IK may be IK should at least give one interview to defuse his anger not getting an interview for long time
Here Shuja is again wrong that IK wouldn't sweep the elections. He is now enjoying support of 3/4th of Pakistani and the sense is growing day by day. It isn't my opinion, it is what the elections and polls have showed.
Army is a public institution, not the king maker. Somebody has the place the army at its right place. Imran Khan is trying to put the Army leadership at its right place, it will take some time and effort, he will succeed because 60% of the population (youth) is listening to Imran Khan. This man Shuja has no clue what is realy happening on the ground in Pakistan.
Karan sir,
I'm surprised in your both interviews why you have not asked questions regarding the root cause of this Mess. I mean ( Regime change ). The other thing is that it is not only imran's personality that attracted youth but the steps which were taken by PTI government mainly foreign policy ( independent at least trying to copy India at some level and making our own decisions).
Third point is that at least khan showed his serious willingness for the betterment of 🇵🇰 which include cutting of prime minister special funds to influence the situations using people's tax money for his own circumstances. Not throwing large parties in PRIME MINISTER OFFICE, etc...
Karan Thapar, one of the greatest journalists of his time, respect from Pakistan
An excellent objective interview. Shuja Nawaz was really equal to the job.

Don’t agree with shuja here many of journalists saying it’s first time in the history when ppl stand against military leadership & khan is far more popular than bhutto. And very important point is in 2018 elections khan could have won more seats if there wasn’t rigging but establishment knows that khan will be difficult to manage so they took 20 seats from khan and gave it to PMLN in punjab and now in vote of no confidence we saw how they use it against khan. But overall this guy is biased and not telling you truth. He’s lying or hiding things
