  • Support The Interview with Karan Thapar - fij.mojo.page/support-the-int...
One of the foremost scholars of the Pakistan army and the brother of former Pakistan Army Chief Gen. Asif Nawaz Janjua, Shuja Nawaz, analyses the challenge Imran Khan has posed to Army Chief Gen. Bajwa, the ISI and the army as an institution. He reflects on the army’s response and whether that has created differences within this critical institution. He also comments on how the army will handle the situation if there is violence when Imran Khan’s long march reaches Islamabad. In that context, what are the stark choices facing the Pakistan army? And, finally, is there a danger of another army takeover, whether under the present army chief or the new one who is yet to be appointed but will take over at the end of this month.

27:00- Karan, your next question to Shuja when he said it’s very unlikely that he may win a majority in next elections, should have been how did Imran win 6 seats out of the 7 seats he contested in recent by elections from different constituencies of the country against 13 opposition party alliance & without military support. Imran’s party PTI has been on a winning spree in provincial by election seats as well, a total of almost 29 wins of 35 seats. It’s not a question of simple majority but a combined strategy of all opposition forces to deny PTI a 2/3 majority. That’s what everyone is afraid of.

Karan Thapar is the most agenda ridden journalist you can find in India. He thinks he is too clever to lead his subject to where he wants to lead them, or he can bully them to that effect. This has been his style and motto ever since he came to the scene in the mid 80s in Rajeev Gandhi’s India. He wouldn’t ask this question as it doesn’t suit his agenda. Similarly, he quietly accepted Nawaz’s arguments that religious fundamentalism is sustained in Pakistan for the right wing turn in India whereas this could easily be the other way around. Thapar never examined this view of Nawaz as this is precisely what he wants his subjects to tell for the general people to believe. That’s why he is a cretin!

Pakistanis whose lives are directly impacted by the unfolding events in their country, hold their own, very clear, distinct, and justifiable opinions as compared to those of Mr. Shuja Nawaz. He analyses the situation mainly from an academic’s mindset and perspective, living and working in America for many years now, far removed from the everyday problems and hardships of ordinary Pakistanis.

When it comes to Pakistan, are the Indian liberal platforms any better? Karan Thapar every now and then invites Pakistanis, ostensibly to inform his viewers on the current political situation in Pakistan. And for that he invites people like Hussain Haqqani, Najam Sethi and this guy, people having publicly known hostile views on Imran Khan. If he really wants to inform his viewers on Pakistan, he can engage with people with diverse views as well. But that is not the purpose. Imran Khan is still known in India. Tapping into hate for him is profitable.

Excellent interview again. Questions were most pertinent. Shuja Nawaz is an eloquent speaker.
Unfortunately, I found him highly pro army, all his answers were tilted to portray good face of army.
The challenge put forth by Imran Khan, is to limit the role of military, only to look after the affairs that has been assigned to them in Pakistan's constitution. This narrative has become very popular among the masses, and a reality which can't be denied.

Karan seems to have gone overboard in introducing Shuja Nawaz and his books, "The Crossed Swords ..." & "The Battle for Pakistan". Both these books represent a sanitized & uncritical perspective of Pakistan's most powerful institution of which his brother was Chief a few decades ago. What stood out in his narrative is his anxiety to rationalize the trends and events in Pakistan's polity that are seen by other scholars as abnormal and repugnant.

Keen observers of the Pakistan situation can see a colossal people’s uprising. It is a people’s peaceful revolution, because their patience has run out and they will not be silenced by any power, internal or external, until they achieve their long denied rights, rule of law and early elections to enable them to choose leaders who are their genuine representatives in decision making positions. Nothing can stand against the people’s power and resolve. Simply stated, the people want an end to autocratic and dictatorial rule in the name of democracy.

Army has no business in politics and especially bringing corrupt and controllable elements in the government.
Why Army doesn't let free elections take place to let people decide who has support whether Imran Khan or others?
So please don't play Army's puppet to verdict who has country wide support.
In Pakistan is respect and righteousness belongs to all (Army, Courts, other all government organs), except people of Pakistan. The actual culprit are power greedy army generals, including this one.

Organised institution it is, but to what purpose ? Shuja Nawaz sahab has skillfully defended all their weaknesses and downright lies. The fact is that Imran is loved by the rank and file of the army. If Imran were'nt popular within the armed forces, he would have been history. And one more thing Karan sahab, Imran Khan is by far the most popular leader in Pakistan's history and he has certainly eclipsed the popularity of ZAB. There is no doubt that Imran comes from a bourgeois background and has the paraphernalia not only to be part of the elitist culture, but to stand head and shoulders above the elite class. However he went through a genuine transformation and became an aberration to the status quo. The army's plan to foist just another invented leader went haywire at a certain stage and turned into a violent personality clash. Please remeber that there would be hardly anyone in the military brass who reads Tolstoy, Pushkin or Dostoyevsky ! There certainly is a human side to everything.

The central question before Pakistanis is the role of the army in its political affairs. That will not change with a new army chief and we have history to prove this right. At this time we cannot afford a new army chief without any change in the governing structure.
What Nawaz Sharif is up to is not as important as finding a solution to a governing structure for the country.
I had proposed a governing council comprising of civil and military to run the affairs of the country till the political situation stabilized or a national government comprising all walks of political life and professional technocrats to take charge.
If Imran Khan succeeds which does not seem likely to me, we have not changed the system and the army is still there to thwart him.
Bajwa is still holding the fort and we may deteriorate like Iraq, Libya and Egypt in our governance if we insist on a change on 29 November without shoring up the planks of our house first.

I respect Shuja for his books, but the fact that he not been in Pakistan for the last 3 years. He's clearly way far from current ground relaities. People all across Pakistan are supporting IK from farmers to industrialists. Why? They earned alot during IK's govt and during 6 months the country's economy is at halt & worst inflation ever in Pak's history. He's acting as Zardari's mouthpiece

This is where the fault line lies, as the army, think a most disciplined force. But in reality, it has the political wing of ISI through wish they try every best to disrupt the political system through different tactics like coerce, intimidation, torturing, kidnaping,of political parties members. A very patriotic journalist has been killed by this our very own disciplined force.we have seen the worst kind of dictatorship in last six month.Need to end this drama and army should be held accountable for their unconstitutional activities.

An excellent interview. Mr Shuja Nawaz is, indeed, one of the most well informed authorities on Pakistan Army. I have two observations to make on his statement.
One, that appointing DG ISI is the exclusive prerogative of the PM. In the past, Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto have appointed the DGs ISI of their choice, not that of the COAS. Nawaz Sharif appointed LG Ziauddin Butt and LG Naveed Mukhtar, and BB appointed LG Rtd Shamsur Rehman Kallu as DGs ISI, without recommendation of the COAS. Why should Gen Bajwa get offended abt IK not accepting his advice on DG ISI. As per which law, rules did Gen Bajwa appoint Gen Anjum as DG ISI without approval of PM. In fact, it is the PM who appoints the DG ISI, without any input from COAS.
Two, everybody knows that NAB is not under the PM and takes orders from elsewhere.

Sadly Shuja Nawaz is slightly out of touch with the current realities on ground in Pakistan.
Recent events strengthen the thesis that 'Pakistan Needs a Peoples Army and NOT Rent-a-General Enslaved Mercenaries'. Army has long lost its Professional dignity and Honor due to persistent history of meddling into Political Engineering- for evidence Retd Gen Durrani gave an affidavit in front of Supreme Court in famous Asghar Khan Case.
Army needs reform: so that its elite is not above law; any dispute on promotions should be given right of appeal in Supreme Court; Its Officers and Soldiers be able to live as Free Citizens after retirement without fear of repressive measures or have their pensions stopped for partaking in national politics.
The Elites of this Army do not consider Corruption as a serious issue.
Army should serve interest of people of Pakistan and not protect the Corrupt Few.

Imran Khan is trying to put the Army leadership at its right place, it will take some time and effort, he will succeed because 60% of the population (youth) is listening to Imran Khan. Karan sir,
I'm surprised in your both interviews why you have not asked questions regarding the root cause of this Mess. I mean ( Regime change ). The other thing is that it is not only imran's personality that attracted youth but the steps which were taken by PTI government mainly foreign policy ( independent at least trying to copy India at some level and making our own decisions).
Third point is that at least khan showed his serious willingness for the betterment of 🇵🇰 which include cutting of prime minister special funds to influence the situations using people's tax money for his own circumstances. Not throwing large parties in PRIME MINISTER OFFICE, etc...

And very important point is in 2018 elections khan could have won more seats if there wasn’t rigging but establishment knows that khan will be difficult to manage so they took 20 seats from khan and gave it to PMLN in punjab and now in vote of no confidence we saw how they use it against khan.
