Coppélia by Leo Delibes - new production by Alexander Sergeev in Mariinsky Theatre

Choreographer Alexander Sergeev and designer Leonid Alexeev have crafted a family-friendly ballet spectacle that reinterprets a story penned over a century and a half ago about the creation of a doll eerily akin to humans, infusing it with a touch of magic. “We wanted the performance to remind one of a children’s book, hence we strived for a watercolour painting effect in the scenic designs,” the creators explain. The vibrant performance features dancers, dolls, kittens and even a teddy bear! Sergeev endowed each character with his unique choreographic language, offering the performers a mixture of intricate classical variations, spirited character dances, and elements of pantomime.

Looks interesting. Coppelia is one of my favorites. I wonder how they explained and handled the Mazurka and Hungarian Dance, as this looks more modern. I like the look of the Dolls in the Toyshop, but hope they haven't lost the soul of this ballet in trying to be cool.

Самая классная сцена в этом балете была с механическими куклами и то испортили, какой такой интелект ? Ну замените первую скрипку на фуз гитару будет прикольно и современно ! Мариинка всегда бнемного уходила от классики особенно вид щелкунчика вызывает удивление и дисонанс ! Я в Мариинку хожу на классный класический звук и танец с этим всё на высшем уровне ну а с художниками и постановщиками надо прощатся !

Mariinsky should be about performing great ballet, not attempting trash Broadway dance. This looks almost as bad as the Royal Ballet’s Alice In Wonderland (and appears to have been influenced by that inferior ‘ballet’).
