How is your sense of self-worth currently? and what are you doing to cultivate self-worth?

Doing for others helps to take the focus off of self! Also, not constantly comparing one’s self to others keep negative self talk at a minimum.
I heard it said once: comparison is the stealer of joy!
I stay off most social media platforms because it exacerbates feelings of inadequacy.
Simply believing I am a high value person helps keep my mind right!
still working daily to improve! Setting small goals for change helps keep on course!
Great advice! I am going to start journaling for personal growth.
      🙏

It is fascinating what you touch on about the social networks etc. It's connected to branding and marketing, which has no room for parts of reality! I love coming here and listening to your words about this.....hmmm maybe i should go to a monastery too.

Honestly, rock bottom lately, so your video found me at the right time.
Been on a self-improvement journey this year, improving my health, skilling up as well, but struggling to see a point in it all. Been trying to be more active in cultivating a world outside me the last couple weeks, though. More time with friends, more doing things for other people, and more taking risks and getting out of my comfort zone. With time hopefully it'll rebuild my confidence.

When I have feelings of inadequacy after seeing my friends doing things I would love to do, I look up at God and say, “I’m jealous! Help me to be joyful for my friend.” And then I look around my beautiful home and at my wonderful life and I am grateful. I appreciate you reminding me of this trap we can get caught in.

Nick as a 65-year-old man I learn so much from you. You bring a very good perspective from a professional therapist as well as a monk. Nobody’s perfect and I appreciate you helping myself and others. As a person who has had severe ADD my whole life and didn’t know it not having the music in the background is really helping me absorb Your thoughts.
I have many Thai relatives and friends that I wish could hear or read your thoughts.

Thank you for the kind reminders 😊 Comparison has become so easy and rampant these days that we default to that judgmental inner voice as we scroll addictively. Assessing ourselves neutrally may not be easy but is the basis of compassion and kindness of ourselves

A professional occupation that I enjoy and serves others, a great financial safety net, which I am regularly expanding, stable housing, enough to eat, reliable transportation, in good health, a spiritual life, few cares and no worries, no toxic people in my personal life. I am blessed and fortunate.

I have started sharing your clips with friends and we are enjoying some great conversations because of this. As I work with young people, I know self worth is an important topic, Thank you for giving me more food for thought on how to think about this in my own situation and how approach this topic with them. Please keep making these clips. You are doing important work for all of us.

When I see myself as separate, an individual, I tend to compare and compete.
When seeing and feeling the same as "others", as we are one, then self worth isn't a factor.
Daily I work on seeing things this way.
Thank you for being so thoughtful and caring to everyone. 💕

As a woman I associated my self worth with my physical appearance. Going through the aging process has been challenging for me. My continuing study and practicing Buddhism has helped me with realizing there is more than the physical. Our bodies are here to be an opportunity to learn the dharma and grow spiritually. I must say that all the degrees in the world doesn't always result in increased self worth. That's why the idea of non self in Buddhism is so helpful to me.

My self-worth is much better than it was a few years ago, and I'm currently making sure to notice what I do well. For years after my trauma, I focused on my weaknesses and ignored my strengths - and yes, I did need to work on certain things, but I needed to do it with compassion and I needed to also recognize that I have strengths. I am now reclaiming my strengths, and believing that I do have something to bring to the table - in career, in relationships.

Love you dear Nick 🙏🏼 this has to be some of the most clear and practical advice on UA-cam yet 😅
Work on your physical skills as we live in a physical world - these don’t happen overnight but through a step by step approach a daily routine of practice. Time is part of the physical world so we need to give time to develop in the physical realm.
Then comes the hidden gem 💎 in each and everyone of us- the spiritual realm hidden in our depths of existence- found through contemplation, gratitude and a daily dose of quiet time to be within.
    Thank you 🙏🏼 so much

You are reminding of a verse in the Dhammapada: "Man delights in craving and false values. The awakened are free from both."
My point: What are we basing our self-worth upon?
For me, this teaching is a confirmation regarding my reflection this morning. In summary: It all gets down to self-esteem and/or self-worth. The way that we respond to anything, even suffering and how we bear it, is reflective of these.

Kindness, compassion and patience towards ourselves can be far more difficult to cultivate than towards others, when it is just as important, if not more so.
As you mentioned, Pra Ajarn, comparing ourselves with others is mentally and spiritually unhealthy. I have come to compassionately compare myself NOW to myself in the past and never address myself negatively, but rather with patience and understanding.

Thank you for your ongoing wonderful teaching Ven. Nick ❤
One of the biggest lessons I have learned in DBT therapy, is that a life worth living is built on living according to our own values (not the values or morals of others).
As we allow our own values to guide our actions, we will inevitably live a fulfilling life.
As we accumulate successes based on listening to and fulfilling our values, we build self-confidence and self-esteem.
In this light, it is impossible to compare yourself to others because each of us have different values (or put difference importance on those values). Our values are part of us from birth, and are uniquely ours.
Note: the actions we take based on our values need to be effective in the long term.. so based on wisdom. You accumulate this wisdom through practicing mindfulness and building skillfulness.

Hola Nick! Thank you for your message about self worth. I am in a state in my life that I have to regain my power in the physical world.Really it takes time and the years go by so I decided to at least try as best as I can and if not I shall make a better plan in my next human life.. At least this gives me hope for a second chance.. Namo Buddhaya ❤️

Thank you, Venerable Nick. I struggle terribly with self worth. Especially what you call external self worth. Internally I know I'm trying to be a good person but what I perceive as my external reflection of that is my difficulty. I will watch this video again to try and investigate this. Sadhu. 🙏
