  • Social formations have welcomed the Government of National Unity's focus on tackling poverty and the high cost of living.
One of the instruments President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted in his address at the opening of Parliament was the extension of the benefit of VAT zero-rated products to other products.
A noble intention perhaps, but zero-rated goods come with their pros and cons.

Tackling poverty is a joke as long our minerals and natural resources are not fairly distributed under state control we are still playing hide and seek. Privatization of SOEs is an impediment to fight poverty. Apartheid nationalized and even life was cheap for blacks who were oppressed because of nationalization and jobs were plentiful under railways and harbours, general post office air ways . Now ANC is privatizing all of these and how are we going to get jobs when this system cuts jobs for huge profits. We no longer have local trains enough to make traveling to work cheap .We don't have main line long distance trains making traveling expensive and hazardous. Textile factories have closed down , we import clothes from China and even toothpicks. Poverty could be easily tackled if we had lands to plough or even gardens where we stay. Our places where we stay have no yards . We all cramped in congested areas . Most of our places are like barracks to sleep and wake up and go to work as a feeder of the white monopoly capital. Cape flats are examples and black old townships of Capetown , informal settlements are worse. This government says this whilst doing the opposite. It is no surprise that the appear as lunatics to the opposition.
