- Turtle Calling Sound
Turtles belong to the order Testudines and are reptiles recognized by their unique shells, primarily formed from their ribs. The two main groups of modern turtles are Pleurodira (side-necked turtles) and Cryptodira (hidden-necked turtles), distinguished by their head retraction methods. There are 360 existing and recently extinct turtle species, encompassing land-dwelling tortoises and freshwater terrapins, found on various continents, islands, and, in the case of sea turtles, extensive ocean regions. Like other amniotes (reptiles, birds, and mammals), turtles breathe air and lay eggs outside water, even though some species inhabit aquatic environments.
Turtles exhibit a widespread distribution globally, inhabiting continents, oceans, and islands with various terrestrial, fully aquatic, and semi-aquatic species. While sea turtles are primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions, leatherbacks can be located in colder areas of the Atlantic and Pacific. Pleurodira species are exclusively freshwater inhabitants found in the Southern Hemisphere, whereas Cryptodira include terrestrial, freshwater, and marine species with a broader range. Regions with the highest diversity of non-marine turtle species include the Amazon basin, Gulf of Mexico drainages in the United States, and specific areas in South and Southeast Asia.
