  • In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges Iraq's former National Security Adviser Dr. Mowaffak al-Rubaie on ISIL strategy, foreign intervention, and whether the Iraqi government is to blame for fuelling the Sunni-Shia divide.
We explore the myth and reality of sectarianism, the legacy of the Iraq War, and whether the Iraqi state can survive as a single entity. Who is responsible for the rise of ISIL and will Iraq be able to forge better future?
    Joining the discussion:
Dr. Anas al-Tikiriti: A British-Iraqi political analyst and CEO of the Cordoba Foundation.
Dr. Abbas al-Hussaini: a former executive member of the Iraq Reconstruction Group and a close ally of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
Professor George Joffe: a senior fellow at Cambridge University.

Lots of people in comments arguing that Mehdi doesn't stop talking after asking questions, he has already clarified this elsewhere, this isn't an interview, it's a head to head confrontation, the point is to push the guest on every little point

    • @BigDaddyBlais
      @BigDaddyBlais 3 роки тому +2

The question is does he allow the other person to push as well against him and the panel? Head to Head only works if one person is not the moderator, that's the issue. I like that he doesn't let people use misleading facts and rhetoric and pushes, but we need to fully see their ideas so we can then separate truth and lies. Most good lies are based on points of fact that are skewed to fit agendas.

I'm not sure Mehdi (?) is so much an interviewer here as he is an interrogator. The title states: "Iraq's former National Security Adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie debates ISIL strategy, sectarianism, and the nations crisis."
That is what drew me to watch this posting.
But is seemed more like an interrogation of Mowaffak al-Rubaie's part in Iraq's history.
And for the record M'laud, I would like to say I only have a vague recollection of this chap being interviewed, (Mowaffak al-Rubaie) I am not a Sunni or Shia - so have no hidden agenda.

All I read on these blogs are racist and abusive comments throwing blame at each other and claiming their right to feel oppressed and mistreated. I'm not saying that people shouldn't have the right to feel aggrieved for things that have happened.
My thoughts are simple, until people realise that we are all human and we all have the right to live in secure and peaceful environments sectarian crimes will continue.
You should never forget but you have to learn to forgive and move on for the greater good...
Peace for all my brothers and sisters in the world....

Mehdi's tactic here seems to be: How can we make a superficial appearance of contradiction in the guest's statements that will make the 'enlightened' audience giggle, and then cut off or edit out any nuanced responses and explanations.

crushing the tender grass under their feet.
    You can read the bitterness
    on the faces

    During this difficult
    and bruising time
    In which all solidarity
    has gone.
    The strongest impose their will

omg Mehdi. You should really learn how to listen people's answers. I am extremely annoyed by his style even if he sometimes attack well the guests that i hate. It is very annoying that he keeps cutting people's talk, ask ridiculously demagogic questions that is completely not helping the discussions. Especially when there are guests whose mother language is not english. Though the topics and guests are amazing most of the time, Mehdi's style and "sarcastic" comments make it impossible to watch the program till the end. This is not journalism, sorry but trying to win the last word like a frustrated teenager.

the biggest problem was trying to unite a bunch of tribes/ religions/religious sect and races together. kurds need there state, the shias need theres and the sunnis need theres. we should of did that when we invaded in 2003. Iraq lives in lah lah land. they thought that when they invaded iraq everyone would be cheering and celebrating. they thought they could unite iraq as one government. well that doesnt work. same goes with africa. africa needs to be split up into tribal states and not nations.

The debate and blame game goes on, I am writing the comments in 2017 where as this head to head debate took place in 2014. Has the condition on ground in Iraq and neighbouring countries improved or deteriorated? In my opinion which was formed in 2001 after the attack on Afghanistan, I strongly believed then and believe now that bigger game is at play to counter the increase in factor "D of IM" in West and also factor "IFR" is on rise. The Arab countries have to blame themselves for the the existing situation which can be only addressed by engaging in a dialogue based on trust and faith by all the party's involved. The region needs more investment in the education and industrialization so that youth can focus on long term economic goals for their own good and nation's well being.
I also see a challenging time for Saudi Arabia starting some time in 2017 and lasting till 2019 when the final incident will take place which would have been started by a rulers family member after he has attained the age of 33 years.

Mehdi Hassan is a wit Shia journalist, but clearly he tries to show that he is hard and terse with Shia-Suni equally, in order to do so. he has to ask question that are almost irrelevant and not true. If the Shia wanted to marjinalise the Sunni, There were not Suni in IRAQ now. 65_70% of Iraq are Shia the rest are Kurds, Sunni Arab, Turkman and Yazidi etc.. Sunni Arabs are only 10 % of polupation.. yet they got more than they deserve. the same number of Sunni are in iraq more than that is Shia in Saudi Arabia.. how is that?

I think this guy Mehdi should learn how to conduct an interview and listen to his guests; i also think that he's very rude and always interrupt and overtalk the people's he interview. He should respect them and shut his mouth untill they answer his Goddamn questions.

Medhi Hasan is so arrogant he thinks he knows how others will respond before they do. I'm baffled that The Oxford Union gives him venue.like this.

I can see you've started to assemble a rudimentary vocabulary. Keep up the good work and one day perhaps someone will care what you think.
