What a painful song. I cry each time I hear it. The murder and destruction of the centuries old Judean Community of Thessaloniki by the German Nazis is unforgettable and unforgiveable. Yehuda Poliker's were born in Thessaloniki and survived Auschwitz. His parents and he are testament to the love of Thessaloniki by its Judean citizens and their strength to withstand the evil of Nazism.

What a hauntingly beautiful Hebrew rendition of Saloniki.
His love toward Saloniki is so apparent & heartrending, considering the Greek peoples' betrayal of their Jewish neighbors.
Yehuda Poliker is a poetic & musical giant of huge proportions.
His songs have been the soundtrack to our life in Israel, and have enriched it tremendously.

i'm so sorry2inform u that greeks during WWII, --even under the german occupation-forces & its puppet-gvrnmt--, were no Ukraine Croatia Poland Bulgaria etc, consult ur history books. W/e happened, sad indeed, was neither "neighbors'fault/betrayal" nor act of any organized antisemitic militia like in those countries which we had none. German monomania methodic-pursue & trickery were the only culprits, still are in much of their psyche

@@alexsiapkaras892 Alas its not my 'impression'..its history & fact.
While there were certainly Greeks who risked their lives to help their Jewish neighbors, many many Greeks were deeply anti- Semitic & hated & were jealous of their Jewish countrymen.
Yes they hated the Germans& truly suffered, but this does not negate the facts of their joy& relief at seeing the Jews' fate.

Actually you are very wrong- there was no betrayal of the community. You need to read what happened. Greeks were two factions (the eventual communists(btw supported by the USSR/Stalin who fought against Nazi regime) who were the freedom fighters & the average people who were old, decrepit, & hungry (who could do nothing because if you talked back to a Nazi soldier he either shot you in the head or bayoneted you in the mouth b/c the greek drachma was bankrupt by 1940). The Nazis came to Greece they killed everyone in their path in order to go after the freedom fighters who eventually became Communists- The community was self evident you couldn't hide it the synagogue didn't have a cross to veer them away- the streets if you go weren't back alleys even if you ran or tried to hide someone (it wasn't like villages where there was a barn or an attic or even a mountain (like in Cephalonia!). you also need to know the archdioceses made fake greek blue ID cards whereby they tried to hide some greek-hebrew citizens as well as greek-moslems by saying they were greek orthodox christians(read about Tom Hank's wife's revelation!!! her dad how he ran from Xanthi). Are you also aware that the first hebrew printing press was run from the island of Cephalonia! During the Venetian times! I don't take offense in your comment b/c the narrative unfortunately is not clear and it never will be b/c people don't even want to think about those times. You also forget- How was Golda Meir going to create a Nation if no one went back? Many Greeks in Cyprus were telling the European Holocaust victims "don't go to the desert , go back to your homes". At that point- we know why they all went East- no more trust of europe. But, hey there are two sides to the coin. The community was 400 years old driven out during the Spanish Inquisition and when you live somewhere 400 yrs; especially Greece, you do become greek. We read the Old Testament- and Yehuda Poliker is great! L'Chaim

I translated the song for you. Basically its about the Saloniki jews returning home after the holocaust
      '"
      Another border, another long eternity
      Wait for me, Thessaloniki
The way to Greece is so long
      Wait for me, Thessaloniki
The heart wonders, The blood freezes
      In Germany's snow
      Iv’e lost them all,
      In the “Lager” at Poland
With the Pale face, Hardly alife,
      Survivors of the death road,
      Closing patched, here we come
      Crying in your streets
      Freedom comes, a new spring
I am getting closer to you
As a pale shadow, a weak body
I’ll come nocking on your gates
      "
