Hi, a Chinese viewer here, just wanted to point out. 72 forms don't mean he can only do 72 transformation. In ancient literature of my culture, numbers don't have a literal meaning. 72 simply means 'a lot'. Another example from the poem about Mulan: 'A decree was issued yesterday night of a conscription from the general. In all the twelve scrolls of the parchment with enlisted names, Father’s name appeared in all.' That's a wrong English translation, because 'twelve' here simply means 'many'.
Honestly, this video made me realise perhaps you will do a good job covering mythology in general .Maybe during dry periods between games you can release 'the lore of greek mythology' or something like that? i'd definitely watch it.
Hearing the stories about Sun Wukong, I love the fact that he was such a chaotic nuisance that the forces of Heaven gave him all sorts of boons and benefits in an effort to make him behave himself...but no, he just had to be the biggest troll in Chinese mythology. In fact he was so chaotic Buddha had to bury him under a mountain for 500 years just to calm him down. Amazing just how dense the mythology around this old tale is.
he was just aNor bellion kid until a compassion person buddha wish him to realize powerful magic don't mean anything. However, don't worry, you won't be locked up forever, someone will come and save you. quite different from western religion ideology, no forever burn in hell despite the wrong doing. Nor go to heaven even you repent. You have to pay what you had done.
The written version of wukong is 悟空 (pronounced as Goku in Japanese), it's consists of 悟 and 空,here 悟 means to comprehend or to become aware, 空means empty or emptiness.悟空wukong is a Buddhist concept,Buddhism believes that "emptiness" is the essence of all things in the universe, and "color" is the illusion of the instantaneous birth and death of the essence of all things (emptiness).so 悟空 generally means ‘’to understand that all things are created by the combination of various conditions, all is illusory and all is constantly changing, don't be bewitched/fooled by the world's appearances‘’
Ive always loved the idea that Wukong being so mischievous in his early years, he ended becomin multiple times immortal. And then goes on to become super OP until the heaven manages to "seal" him under a mountain.
26:17 Funny thing is, in one of the Boss Fight Demos with the Tiger Vanguard, the player character is defeated, and they actually do revert into a strand of hair, so the Destined One could be a clone after all. However, the strand of hair in the death animation is a shiny gold color, while the player and Wukong's fur is more light grayish. This could mean that the Destined One could possibly be an upgraded, specifically-designed clone created from one of Wukong's three Golden "Special" hairs given to him by the Bodhisattva Guanyin before he set off on the journey.
What if the protagonist is the Six-Eared Macaque? He could've been spared by Buddha after Wukong killed him, and given his own chance to reach enlightenment. Now instead of impersonating Wukong, he tries to re-live his journey to achieve Buddhahood.
@@hjhghj462 Yes, because i've given a initial idea for the character. What matters is how you use that to create a story around it. Even the theory of the main character being a clone of Wukong sounds boring without any story around it.
The macaque is almost as powerful as wukong. He transformed himself as wukong and in the book only Buddha himself was able to tell the difference. Monkey here is likely a clone of wukong transformed from a hair
@@Chopzi11a Shadow of the Erdtree literally would not be allowed for such an award at the official TGA’s. On a technicality, it would be omitted as a GOTY contender due to it being an Expansion - even if it may still be better than a lot of the games on that final list lol.
Seeing you get sponsored by Game Science for Black Myth Wukong is wild. I was interested in the game because it looked to delve into Journey to the West few other adaptations would do. I even liked the fact that a couple of the trailers teased us with the 80s series' theme song. Beyond the fact that for certain the monkey we play as will not be Wukong himself, I'm not gonna speculate much. I will let others do that instead and just watch
"The journey to the west" also briefly touches on the existence of 3 equally special monkey's that existed alongside Sun Wukong on Mount Huaguo and while each of those are significantly different from Wukong not even being of the same species. it does kinda prove that Celestial Monkeys are not a unique phenomenon so i personally theorize that the protagonist of the game is an entirely separate younger Celestial Monkey that essentially came into being when Wukong ascended as a buddha. essentially my belief is that due to the absence of 1 of the celestial monkeys from the mortal world or the jade emperor's palace caused the birth of a new Celestial stone Monkey to fill that gap left behind by wokong's ascension.
I feel like most of the soulsborne community has pointed at this one and said "yes, you are the chosen one." I never preorder but I'll def be picking up day one unless it reviews super bad for some reason
The Ruyi Golden Cudgel(ruyijingubang) mentioned at 24:48 is Sun Wukong’s exclusive weapon. Meaning, the weapon is a stick that can be used however you want. The material of this weapon can be simply understood as the vibranium in Marvel, which is not available in the mortal world. It can become larger or smaller, lighter or heavier, and cannot be destroyed, making it an extremely powerful weapon.
This Ruyi Golden Cudgel was first used by the Dragon King of the Sea to stabilize the sea. When Sun Wukong shrank the Ruyi Golden Cudgel and turned it into his weapon, the sea began to become no longer calm and became rough.
I hope it's an achievable upgrade in-game. Like a max upgrade really high-level staff or a gimmick or special perk/ability that's really strong. I remember in the most recent gameplay footage against the bear, the frog, and the giant bronze baby the player character had a unique staff with the ends opening up in a swirling pattern. I noticed that if the player ran around for a second or two without attacking the ends of the staff would glow. I have no idea what it does, if anything, but it looks cool.
It is originally a measuring tool, forged by the Lord Lao Zi. King Yu borrowed it to measure the water during the Great Flood(Great Flood story exists in all cultures). That’s why it can change size and length at will. He then put it in the East China Sea to stabilize the sea. it was there for thousand years until Wukong mastered the skill to control space and mass of objects and stole it.
The white dragon that the destined one (player) fought in the UE5 trailer is very likely to be the Kang Jin Long, represented by its unique horn, not the white dragon horse.
Also, in the original script, Tang San Zang is the reincarnation of the golden cicada, so it is a bit weird for the destined one to transform into a golden cicada. But I'm sure it has something to do with the story.
In the first 13-min gameplay trailer, the wolf boss said "Why don't you let go of the stick and learn Dharma (Buddha's teaching) with me", which is very unlikely to happen in the original story. In the original story, Yao Guai (monsters) are very "inhuman" and their only goal is to eat human's flesh, especially Tang Sang Zang's, because they believe by doing so they would become immortals. There was never a case for a Yao Guai to practice Buddha's teaching.
In the UE5 trailer where the Red Butted Monkey sit on the roof of a temple, the decorations on the roof were rats, which represent dirtiness and bad omens. In traditional culture, heavenly horses and immortal creatures are the things often used. In addition, the Tu Di (local god) who turned the destined one into a bat was a bird with a human head, which is also not a common appearance for a Tu Di. This type of combination was for Yao Guai (monsters). So it is very likely that the story of this game happened at a time point after the original story, where Buddism shatterred, no human is around, and monsters took the world. And player as the destined one could have a central quest of re-glorifying the Buddism (my guess). There are many other evidences like the wall painting including Da Peng, which is not a common worship in Buddism, but I'm not an expert so I'd better say nothing. Good video!
@@starerror Nah you're wrong. Dharma's main goal is to persuade people to practice goodness and kindness, the white elephant and the fake Maitreya were defeated by Samantabhadra and the real Maitreya because they stole, scammed, and killed, which were nowhere close to Dharma. They were indeed once a pupil or a mount of gods, but they absolutely betrayed the teaching once they escaped the heaven. In the original story, the interpretation of "Dharma" is controlled by the gods and people's common sense, so there was no reason and no way for YaoGuai to claim themselves practicing Dharma when they were about to do something inhuman. However in this case, the wolf guy said that without hesitation. Keep in mind, knowing Dharma isn't equivalent to practicing Dharma, let alone teaching Dharma.
Oooh! This is a cool sponsorship and very creative and way to integrate a creator’s strengths into the marketing in a natural way! Been looking forward to this game for a while, and awesome to know there’s not going to be any MTX
I love that they came to you for a lore dive. Your unpacking of Elden Ring lore has been feckin wonderful and I can't wait for more. Been looking forward to this game a lot!
Honestly, I think the destined one is actually Wukong’s son. There is a trailer of an old man telling a child that his destiny is to “cleanse the world in blood and grow lotuses in it.” This would explain why you go through the game as someone so similar to Sun Wukong. You’re literally following in your father’s footsteps to become just like him.
@@natn41r Didn’t stop them from making a story where he has a son in the American Born Chinese series. Keep in mind that Wukong is a much bigger free spirit than just any monk. He steals, swindles, harasses, tricks and fights people on a daily basis in his story. Not to mention his ego is bigger than heaven itself. I’m pretty sure he’d have no problem reproducing in one way or another. Maybe even through magical means if possible.
Not likely, the monkey introduced himself to his master:"having no parents, just a monkey out of stone motivated by the QI of sky and land",his kind don't have the ability to reproduction.
Soo “Journey to the West” is one of the Greatest Novels ever written. Give me those battles, with souls mechanics… this might be saying a lot but if this is a hit(which I think it will be) this should open the doors for a lot of Chinese developers going forward
Monkey king without the golden headband is either before or after the actual journey to the west. The headband is made to control the unruly wukong. When the monk chants the headband shrinks, causing excruciating pain
A very common mistranslation is the 72 transformations being 72 specific transformations rather than 72 categories of transformations. That's why he's able to transform into all kinds of birds or all kinds of people rather than just one specific person or one specific bird.
7:30 the dialogue isn’t the guard, the Chinese subtitles say the voice is coming from underground, which could be 土地公, a ground god wukong can summon in the journey to the west story.
Also Aang. If you want more information, look up Overly Sarcastic Productions. Red over there has an ongoing series telling the story of the Monkey King.
This game is the whole reason I went and bought a PS5 my hype level is been broke when I seen you get to fight on the clouds like in the movie an some of them boss fights omg
Great work, i've been reading Journey to the West these days again (Chinese oringinal version) and i have almaost the same conclusion as you. The story of black myth happens after the "journey", and something really dark happened during this time, some gods and Buddhas have died, fallen, been usurped, evene blasphemed. And that's what the "BLACK" in the titile means. Well it‘s also the theory that we many Chinese players currently believe in. Kind of a pity this work missed that video of May 20, there's something extremely crucial in the original lore that comes up, 紧箍,the golden ring/crown/tiara thing(some called it eldenring lol). This is almost as important and representative as the 如意金箍棒 for Sun Wukong. Although its appearance does not indicate directly that the old monkey is THE Sun Wukong, I believe that this object is a good example of the character's inherent contradiction - powerful but beastly in nature (even the original sometimes used the word "demon" to describe him). It would be great if someone could research it and introduce it to players. Thank you. - Please keep up the good work.
So imagine you are a Chinese guy growing up in China, Journey to the West TV show is aired EVERY year multiple time. You imitated Sun WuKong’s monkey moments as a kid, swing a stick like his staff, all your friends are the same. Everybody in China has watch it every year since first aired in 1983 as long as you have a TV. Chinese people have been filming Journey to the west since 1927 盘丝洞 (Cave of the Silken Web) by director 但杜宇. I can not stress how much people love journey to the west. Now you’re a 30 years old gamer and you see this.
Being a fan of God Of War this game is a must-have 4 me the mythology games with all of the characters/monsters will always hold a special place in my ❤️ I can't wait til it comes out...👍🏾
FYI , in the original TV series Journey to the west- there’s a episode where a magical money with similar powers like original Sun Wukong , try to imitate Sun Wukong.
The Later Journey of the West is a sequel to Journey to the West set 200 years later. The main character is the spiritual descendant of Sun Wukong, Sun Luzhan.
There is a theory about the game storyline is that journey to the west is a destined cycle by Buddha or Heaven, while Sun Wukong had accomplished his destined fate by reaching to the journey's end years ago, the destined one in the game now players will play, is in the next cycle and who will encounter Sun Wukong at some point in the game as those previous destined one who accomplished their journey would become the enemies of the next destined one. Another theory about those spider demons is that the old spider matriarch actually is Chang'e, who was a heavenly maiden and Bajie's lover back in the days when Bajie was a celestial general, both of them were published by Heaven for their forbidden relationship and hence they were turned into monsters so as to suffer from killing each other and therefore the captured groom in the game display is very possibly Bajie himself.
I think your interpretation is quite spot on. Well done. Wukong is one of the most beloved characters that almost everyone in China is familiar with. Really excited to see his story presented in this way to a broader audience. There has been widespread speculation about who the player character really is, but I guess we can only wait for the myth to be enveiled in August. One thing is confirmed by the developer that the game is based on the original Journey to the West, not any of the sequels.
It’s quite nice that the developers asked you to give a sort of in depth breakdown and analysis of the lore. It’s also very nice of them to be upfront and say there’s no micro transactions involved in the game : )
Quick correction on your statement that his hair clones can't make more clones, ngl he outright says they can in the journey to the west chapter 90 “On my body,” replied Pilgrim with a chuckle, “there are eighty-four thousand hairs. One of them can change into ten of me, and the ten can also change into one hundred. In fact, the transformation can grow to millions and billions. This is the magic of the body beyond the body” (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 4, p. 220).
My only problem is I hear it's mission based like Nioh. Don't get me wrong I loved the Nioh games that's why I have the Platinum for them, but I feel as though this game should've tried to be on the scale of Elden Ring. I mean this is Wukong it should be more free and open to explore and run into all types of creatures and secret boss fight's. Hopefully the game delivers I'll definitely be getting it, but that's just my opinion though.
Full lore to be take in consideration: Level 1: [ 西游记 THE Journey to the west (1592) ] a satire novel based on Chinese mythology, story we all eastern grew up and familiar with. Level 2: [ 大话西游 A Chinese Odyssey (1995) ] Stephen Chow movie series, the OG subversion work of JTTW with WK crazy romance story, starting point of derivative work of the classic. Level 3: [ 悟空传 WuKong (2000) ] Web Novel by JinHeZai which inspired by Chow work, a dark re-interpretation of WK life story with a lot conspiracy, was a big hit in Chinese internet at the time. Level 4: [ 斗战神 Asura (2010) ] MMORPG on Tencent, story highly inspired by the web novel, JinHeZai is the game world view chef designer. And the developer team in Tencent at that time, is the dev team of BMW today. In that sense, Asura can be count as prequal of BMW.
I have a theory I saw on a video. In the challenge "Fake and Real Sun Wukong", the one that was killed was the real Wukong, and the Six-Ear survived and completed the journey, thus achieving enlightment and became Victorious Battle Buddha. The Sun Wukong after reincarnation (Because he is basically immortal after he crossed his name in the Book of Life and Death.) went on a journey to reclaim his title and has his revenge. My theory is based on these. 1) The old monkey told us about 3 myths about the journey. 1 is that the journey is real and they all became Buddhas, 2 is that the journey is real but Wukong died somewhere. 3 is that the journey is fake or a plot. The theory I have can answer all these myths. The journey is real, but it was a plot from the gods to kill Wukong, lead by Amida Buddha and finally, Wukong really died. 2) About the challenge, there are 2 individuals beside Amida who recognized who is the real one, but they refused to talk. Some says that they were afraid of the Six-Ear, whose power is comparable to Wukong and can easily kill them all. But if they really revealed the truth and even if the Six-Ear tried to kill them, the real Wukong was still there and will protect them, so there was no reason for them to be afraid of the Six-Ear beside that maybe they didn't, they were afraid of being punished if they go against the plot made by Amida Buddha. Moreover, we have 2 characters appeared in the trailer which is the land god (the guy with the big head and a staff) and the boss (The fat guy inside the shrine). The land god mistook our mc with Wukong, which means our monke and Wukong looks identical. The boss told that our soul traveled through the six realm, which means we died at a time in the past but couldn't "completely die", which can be proven with the fact that Wukong is basically immortal. 3) All the monsters that tried to eat the monk were the deities's pet that escaped and tried to gain immortality by eating Xuan Zang. The Land God mistook us from wukong and told us about him in respect showed that the timeline of the game is after the journey, when "Wukong" became Buddha. Xuan Zang also achieved enlightment and became Buddha, so the monsters have no reason to escape Heaven anymore, so my theory is that they were sent to kill our mc, by who? By the deities of course. 4) The name itself: "BLACKMYTH WUKONG", we can understand it as a darker myth about the journey, what can be darker than the fact that the journey was a plot to kill our Sun Wukong, lead by non other than the Amida Buddha. More lore. Depending on the timeline is how long after the journey, the final boss could be insanely hard lore-wise. Based on my theory and how reincarnation works in Chinese myth, it usually takes a few hundreds years to get a full reincarnation, so the timeline might be a few hundred years after the journey. In the Post Journey to the West story, 300 years after the Journey, Amida died along with his 2 Buddhas who, with him, formed the Big 3 Buddhas representing the past, present and future (Amida being the present) and the resurrection of an entity who I will call "No God" because English is not my native language. No God took over heaven and released demons to wreck havoc all over the 3 realms (Heaven-Mortal-Hell). about 37 years later, Amida reincarnated and needed 17 Sariras to complete his reincarnation and gain his full power. No God, knowing this, tried to kill the weak Amida and take the Sariras. Wukong, knowing he is the 17th Sarira, sacrificed himself to defeat No God and helped Amida to reincarnate, thus saving the 3 realms. After this, Amida recognized Wukong and gave him the highest title of all. He became the successor of one of the Big 3 Buddhas, representing the past. Thus making him Amida's senior and basically has higher authority than Amida himself. If the timeline is right, then our Wukong will have to face an entity even stronger than Amida Buddha.
There is also this wild conspiracy theory against the budda that the real sunwukong was not the one who acended at the end of journey to the west. Instead he was swapped with the 6 ear monkey and the budda meant for that to happen. Its possible that the monkey we play as is small piece of the real Sunwukong's soul while the main piece is trapped/occupied elsewhere.
I would like to point out that the player character in the early demo is most likely TANG SANZANG the buddist monk disciple who i believe is the only one referred to as 'golden cicada' in the novel. And since he was accompanied by Sun Wukong to retrieve the sutras it would make sense having what we thought in the gameplay was 2 monkey kings
The protagonist of the game has the ability to transform into the enemies he defeats because of his innate talent. This is different from Sun Wukong's acquired skill of 72 transformations. It is speculated that the protagonist might be one of the legendary Four Great Monkeys: the Red-Bottomed Horse Monkey. I'm not sure if this translation is correct. Sun Wukong is the Intelligent Stone Monkey of the legendary Four Great Monkeys, and the game protagonist's transformation ability comes from his own innate talent: Ever-changing.
Awesome video!!! This is my personal must play game for this year (Metroid Prime 4 would be the other but it’s likely Switch 2 bound). The lore is astounding. I hope to read the novel before the game hits.
I read the book last year and I really recommend it to people. It's honestly really fun and the world, monsters, gods, demons and stories just make it read like a great fantasy novel (but unlike modern fantasy worlds its based not just on years of worldbuilding but on hundreds of years of it through legends and myth). You might be scared by it being from the 16th century and thus hard to read but consider that since you'll probably be reading a modern translation the language by default will be slightly modernized to make it easy to digest for today's reader. The character of Wukong especially make the story very entertaining since he starts as a kind of anti-hero and while being strong, courageous and determined he is also really arrogant, aggresive and rash. He constantly gets into quarrels and trouble but then overgoes a transformation throughout the journey which overall just makes for a great story.
I think the main character "Chosen One" is a reincarnation of Wukong.. before he has reached Buddhahood. Pretty sure he hasn't finished the journey, but has somehow had to reloop due to reincarnation and/or time travel.
You are really amazing. Your inference is very similar to the argument of the Chinese UA-camr (龙崎棒棒糖). Another reference is that the predecessor of the Game Science Production Group, Quantum Studio, had a Chinese online game called "斗战神", which was also adapted from Journey to the West. There are many reused concepts and characters in Black Myth.
There'sa manhwa/manhua simply called "Journey to the West" that I think will do well in a theory for the story. We are at a time after Tang Sanzang brought the Sutra from India. As heavens didn't use it well, the Sutra took life and a physical form before going on to live a human life (if I remember well). As heaven spends all of its forces searching for it, demons run rampant, the world descends into chaos and the lowly, isolated gods lament on heaven and earth fate. Tang Sangzan is then tasked to reform his old team, find the Sutra and Bring it back to India, But eveything went awry as the demons wreak havoc everywhere. In the game, it would mean that since Sun Wukon ascended & Tand Sanzang went on his life/Died, the other demons went back to their old habits. Since there's no one fit enough (wether by strength or righteousness), Sun Wunkong Tasked one of his aspects to wait for another monkey to rise from stone. It would give sense to the repeat of the original story without following it to the letter, as in the manhua, Tang Sanzang reforms his team (through a bit of fatherly "love"), add new companions and escort the Sutra toward India while fending off demons and maybe heavely soldiers. In the game, we could be that new stone monkey who is tasked to bring as much order as he can while following the steps of his predecessor. I don't think ther will be much of it in the game, but I love the idea, and it would fit with the examples you showcase in the video (the old monk-ey, the survivor matriarch spider or the dragon-horse being wild again)
I’m not going to lie. I honestly love how these devs are getting our favorite creators to introduce us to the story and help us understand all of its motivations and idiosyncrasies that a western audience might miss. So pumped for this title.
This looks interesting. It reminds me of a korean drama from a couple years back that was also based on Sun Wukong that plays on the idea of him having to protect someone special from demons. I am looking forward to seeing howbthisbgame handles the story.
the game is sequel to a much easier game called 斗战神(never released in the west), which was based off a novel(悟空转, got popular around 2010s) that was based on the journey to the west. the novel was successful but the author never finished it. most older Chinese are waiting for this game to finish the book cuz the author said he'd help with the ending of the story.
That tiger demon thing looks like it might be based on/be a Rakshasa. Which is a tiger looking demon from hindu/buddhist mythology 👌🏼 i absolutely love Rakshasa, and hope thats what it is!!
IIRC at the end of journey to the west when wukong ascends he leaves his mortal flesh behind. I feel like the chosen one could be his mortal flesh given life again
There is a theory that the character players play as, isnt Sun Wukong nor are they Six-Eared Macaque but instead is his spiritual descendant Sun Luzhen (Monkey Who Walks Reality) from the novel Later Journey to the West whixh takes place 200 years after the initial Journey to the West. Already i can see similarities with that and BM:W

Im glad you're also getting into the lore of this game. So far it seems great!
Hey brother - great to see you here!
Likewise my man!
That's a good theory
I love that idea.
@@Dannamoroll what do you mean? did some new info get released that supports my theory?
@@akselbuchBoi do I have something to tell you😭 such a good prediction. Not 100% correct, more like 88%
@@yungnash2326 yeah I started playing the game and wow it’s crazy how close I got…
I thought Wukong's clones could also make copies of themselves. But it could also be he six eared Macaque who has made himself to be just like wukong.
I thought I was excited for this game BEFORE this video, now I just can't wait. Stunning cover, thank you!
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it!
It looks incredible i really can't wait to explore more about Wukong power and abilities
I don't think I have been more excited about a game since Elden Ring tbh. August Can't come soon enough

Doesn't it come out in august?

The Ruyi Golden Cudgel(ruyijingubang) mentioned at 24:48 is Sun Wukong’s exclusive weapon. Meaning, the weapon is a stick that can be used however you want. The material of this weapon can be simply understood as the vibranium in Marvel, which is not available in the mortal world. It can become larger or smaller, lighter or heavier, and cannot be destroyed, making it an extremely powerful weapon.
This Ruyi Golden Cudgel was first used by the Dragon King of the Sea to stabilize the sea. When Sun Wukong shrank the Ruyi Golden Cudgel and turned it into his weapon, the sea began to become no longer calm and became rough.
the weight is not variable,一万三千五百斤,按明朝的市斤 its roughly 8t
I hope it's an achievable upgrade in-game. Like a max upgrade really high-level staff or a gimmick or special perk/ability that's really strong.
I remember in the most recent gameplay footage against the bear, the frog, and the giant bronze baby the player character had a unique staff with the ends opening up in a swirling pattern. I noticed that if the player ran around for a second or two without attacking the ends of the staff would glow. I have no idea what it does, if anything, but it looks cool.
It always weighs 108 thousand pounds if I’m not mistaken
Good video!
你对西游记的了解非常的肤浅,很多原著中的怪物本身就是菩萨或者佛陀的坐下弟子或者神兽变化而成。他们中许多都是会佛法的。如白象精和黄眉大王等等

Hmm... Very well. You... Join the Monkey King, as family...
Zhu Bājiè(Pigsy)actually appears in one of the trailers for a very brief moment, the Pigman is my favorite character from Journey to the West
Great shout tbh
I don't think Wukong can have children. He is technically a Buddhist monk.
@@natn41r
Didn’t stop them from making a story where he has a son in the American Born Chinese series.

I feel dumb for never knowing where the inspiration for goku came from. This game looks so sick

Great video, thank you for all the effort you put into bringing it to us.
Imagine when Fromsoftware releases their next game with this type of graphics combined with their excellent masterful art direction?
Appointing a monkey to guard the peach garden is a genius idea, obviously nothing could go wrong there😂
Love the vid smough, love that souls and souls like games are getting the love they deserve, keep it up bud
Being a fan of God Of War this game is a must-have 4 me the mythology games with all of the characters/monsters will always hold a special place in my ❤️ I can't wait til it comes out...👍🏾
Good to know Wukong's master's name is Pretty Sushi.
Great to know that the dev is supporting creators to promote their games
great video and explains background lore so clearly!! well done
Like the other guy said, return to monke
Red from Overly Sarcastic Productions has put together some humorous animated videos outlining the story of Journey to the West.
Great video! I’m so excited for this game!! I think it’s a good interpretation!
It’s quite nice that the developers asked you to give a sort of in depth breakdown and analysis of the lore. It’s also very nice of them to be upfront and say there’s no micro transactions involved in the game : )
Quick correction on your statement that his hair clones can't make more clones, ngl he outright says they can in the journey to the west chapter 90
“On my body,” replied Pilgrim with a chuckle, “there are eighty-four thousand hairs. One of them can change into ten of me, and the ten can also change into one hundred. In fact, the transformation can grow to millions and billions. This is the magic of the body beyond the body” (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 4, p. 220).
Great video and research and effort.
Looking forward to more 👍
I am glad the devs reach out for you. Thanks for enlightening us about the background story behind sunwukong
This video deserves more audience who wants to play Black Myth Wukong ❤❤
My only problem is I hear it's mission based like Nioh. Don't get me wrong I loved the Nioh games that's why I have the Platinum for them, but I feel as though this game should've tried to be on the scale of Elden Ring. I mean this is Wukong it should be more free and open to explore and run into all types of creatures and secret boss fight's. Hopefully the game delivers I'll definitely be getting it, but that's just my opinion though.
In Pinyin, zh usually makes a J sound so Nezha is pronounced more like "Neh-Jah" than like "Nez-hah."
Excellent analysis!🎉
Thank you!
Full lore to be take in consideration:
Level 1: [ 西游记 THE Journey to the west (1592) ] a satire novel based on Chinese mythology, story we all eastern grew up and familiar with.
I've been using the quote my whole life and only now do I know it's from Journey to the West!
Sun Wukong is the Intelligent Stone Monkey of the legendary Four Great Monkeys, and the game protagonist's transformation ability comes from his own innate talent: Ever-changing.
i like your video ,very clearly。In three months, we will all become the Monkey King。
GOTY!!! Ive been waiting for this game for yearssss
The thing i look forward the most is the voice acting and the old Chinese they will be using. 👍🏻
It is 110% set after the events of Journey to The West
Agreed - it is an incredible book and very accessible I found.
Developers knew what they were doing when they approached SmoughTown. Thank you for bringing the myth closer, I am mostly familiar with the old movie.
Black myth wukong is my first soulsborne. Hopefully, I don't die a lot, lol
I think the main character "Chosen One" is a reincarnation of Wukong.. before he has reached Buddhahood. Pretty sure he hasn't finished the journey, but has somehow had to reloop due to reincarnation and/or time travel.
Excited to perform Shadow Clone Jutsu! @13:00
We need an update on this
The game delivered
I’m not going to lie. I honestly love how these devs are getting our favorite creators to introduce us to the story and help us understand all of its motivations and idiosyncrasies that a western audience might miss. So pumped for this title.
This looks interesting. It reminds me of a korean drama from a couple years back that was also based on Sun Wukong that plays on the idea of him having to protect someone special from demons. I am looking forward to seeing howbthisbgame handles the story.
I'm so pumped for this game.
Only SmoughTown to make a 30 minutes advertising, and I loved it!
That dragon is not the bai long ma. It's jin Kang long, one of the other dragons in the lore. You can recognize it with his signature unicorn horn.
One of my favourite tales. I'm wildly excited for this!
the game is sequel to a much easier game called 斗战神(never released in the west), which was based off a novel(悟空转, got popular around 2010s) that was based on the journey to the west. the novel was successful but the author never finished it. most older Chinese are waiting for this game to finish the book cuz the author said he'd help with the ending of the story.
Limegrave soundtrack playing in the background :)
Sun Wukong is the definition of a side character who ends up more popular than the main protagonist.
Bcz the main character is peaceful and non violent
So hype for this. Lies of P and Black Myth seem like absolute classics.
I wonder, if there will be bosses where they have 2 phases/ 2 HP bars.
