*Great **Latest.Bike** , good looking, good suspension and love the gearing. I've tested some bikes that were more then twice the price but not as good. Get lots of looks when riding.*
The most thorough video I've seen on the subject, yet simple enough!
This was really useful for me. I appreciated the functional perspective on this set of problems. Thank you for taking the time to make this. SUPER GOOD !
Definitely different from what other's try to teach re: bike fit and knee pain. You explained the WHY and that's WHY this is the best explanation :)
Your channel is fantastic no nonsense information. I'm sure you're going to get a lot more subs in the near future. I love your channel man.
Thanks so much! If you find my videos helpful, please share those with your friends. Cheers!
By far the best video on knee pain for cyclists. Thank you
I saw like 50 different videos about this topic. This is the best that I have ever seen.
Thank you so much. My knee pain only happens on my right leg, on the outer right side. I’ll have to look into clear alignment
Having the same issue here , have you figured it out, friend?
Wow. i was searching for answers on shin pain, but this video articulated knee pain fundamentals in both an easy to understand manner, and presented with class.
A big THANK YOU as I eagerly go to the saddle height and cleat adjusting videos next!
I have to say I find this chap's posts excellent. He really does help us understand, rather than just saying "do this". And his advice totally works , such as not going higher with saddle height than backpedalling with heels on pedals without hip rocking as a starting point. So many bike shops and books suggest going 5 or 10 mm higher, which will mess everything up.Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
I've looked at numerous knee pain videos and bike forums as well. I had major pain in the back of my knee. Your video as usual is very in-depth and explanatory. Great job at giving a different perspective from other videos. This is why I've subscribed when I found out about your channel a week ago. Thank you.
I recently got upgraded to roadbike. Before I purchase bike I used to watch your videos a lot.
I liked your content... To the point. Good explanation.
Just like that now I got this video. I experienced pain on back of knee but now I have technical reason why that pain.
Thanks a lot!!! Wish you all luck... Keep going
really helpful video, you didn't specifically explain all the anatomy like all other videos do, BUT you showed the physiology of it really well that most videos lack greatly.
I would like to comment on this guys ability to get his point across he has great way of explaining in order for the listener to be able to understand. Thank you.
Another important factor affecting knee pain is the crank arm length and this was not mentioned in the video. The most common form of this problem is a short rider with a short inseam riding on a bike with cranks that are too long. Even when the seat height and set-back are correct, the too-long crank arms cause the knees to rise too high at the top of the stroke.
Many riders can handle a fairly wide range of crank arm length comfortably but knee pain can be severe when the mismatch is extreme -- especially for long distance riders. The crank length fit also changes with age (older rides may feel more comfortable with a shorter crank length compared to when they were young).
For example, my wife is 5' 2" tall (157.5 cm) with a 27" inseam (68.6 cm). When she was younger, she felt most comfortable with a 150 mm long crank arm. She's in her mid 60's now and feels more comfortable with a 145 mm crank. Unfortunately, such short cranks are virtually nonexistent for road bikes (165 mm is the shortest that most offer). She was forced to get a crank for a BMX bike in order to get a comfortable length that eliminated knee pain.
Regarding a rider with unequal leg lengths, adding spacers between the cleat and shoe is not always the best solution and can make knee discomfort worse in some circumstances. You need to consider how the leg is shorter. If the knee of the short leg is closer to the hip than the knee of the long leg, then spacers may work. However, if the knees of both legs are the same distance (or very close) from the hips, then a better solution would be a shorter crank arm for the short leg.
Thank you for sharing this info!
I have to agree, I got rid of my knee pain by going to a shorter crank,
I'm 5'6 tall with short legs and a standard crank of 170mm was too long, I could not buy a shorter crank so I had to modify my cranks by drilling and tapping them, I now have 150mm cranks, which feel great.
D.Eldon that probably makes sense. I'm 5'4.5-5'5 and been riding pain free for bout 100 miles up until my last 20 mile ride experiencing front knee pain .I think I do need to raise my seat a lil and I'm currently have 170 crank arms so time to experiment and hopefully be pain free
I'd actually go even further than this. I got really bad (I mean REALLY bad) back pain after lowering the saddle too much. It felt great for an hour , but then awful hip and lower back pain, due to my thigh actually coming too close to my chest with each pedal stroke. Sounds weird I know, but all was cured when I went up by 5 to 10 mm, despite initial hamstring "ouch" moments.
Actually one of the best videos on the topic. Straight to the point. Thanks!
Too much to the front make your knee flex more... can be countered by put the saddle higher which make your knee flex less.
Same apply to put your saddle to the back require you to lower it to compensate.
Q: So there are many point that give you exactly the same knee angle and which one should you use?
A: Any of those work fine but there are 2 spots that worth noting.
1. the point that make your weight balance on the bike well, not too much to your hand not too much to your saddle, just right place of center of gravity to help you pedal, good for general roadie.
2. the most forward point that you still can maintain, this prefer aerodynamic more than ability to generate enormous torque achieved in balanced spot, suitable for time-trialer.
Thank you so much! I'm brand new to cycling and just started having pretty severe knee pain. I had no idea this could be the result of saddle positioning. Looking forward to readjusting and also stretching out more, so see if that alleviated the issues.
I used to get bad knee pain on the front, but was riding in soft trainers on big flats, I now use Specialized 2FO MTB shoes, they are unbelievable stiff for a flat MTB type shoe and using normal sized flats, my pain is gone.
Purchased new shoes and having severe problem getting the cleats just right. Having inner front lower knee pain. Not directly in the front, more on the inner lower side of the knee. I have tried many adjustments with several days rest in between rides. Help??????
Totally relate. Cleat position is huge. I had two different shoes. One that I have always used and never had a problem. I bought a new pair (different brand) and I tried them yesterday for the first time and I had pain on the side of my knee. DEF the shoes!!
amazing job explaining every thing in simple way
This is very important thing. If suffering from knee pain it is very frustating. Thanks for explaining it in a simple way. For beginner riding any kind of bicycle, me incl. the cadence is very common cause.
I've been experiencing the same outer knee pain you've described from a toed in cleat position. Thanks for taking the time to spell that out. Now I hopefully have a remedy for the outer knee pain.
Thanks for the specific info. I was having pain in the inside of my right knee only. I was playing with cleat on last ride and it the pain switched to the outside on my right knee. So your information was helpful. I couldn’t figure out the prob. The stretching is also great advice 👍🏼
Hey, i have the same problem, did you managed to fix it?
@@crackerwhacker6234 Yes, I'm not sure what specially did it. I was doing some cleat rotation. I also raised my seat about 1/4 in. increments. I think it ended up about a 1/2 in. high roughly. So far none of the knee issues.
Great video! I did a century ride in the NYC today where I experienced knee pain (front knee) for the first time while riding. I couldn't figure out the reason for the pain as I have a properly fitted bike/cleats with no prior history of similar pain. I do believe your point 1 is helpful in potentially diagnosing my problem - basically, I clipped/unclipped many many times throughout the day. In the process, I have applied down pressure while in the forward off-saddle position in my right leg (my clipped in leg) in order to gain movement from traffic stops (50x stopping at traffic lights possible). This put a lot of pressure on my knee, similar to having a saddle too far to the front. Thanks man, you are great!
Thank you very much, I had a hip injury some time ago. And I am trying to keep in shape. Getting some pain in quadriceps. And you're video was very helpful.
I realise this is an old video but it was a great help for me to understand where my pain is coming from
I used to ride normal bikes but eventually various body parts started to object to what I was riding and had taken for granted all those years as being a great bike and fit. Great advice here on what muscles do what and how to avoid knee pains , however I will add one more that most bike shops no zilch about. My crank arms are 153 mm cut down from 170 mm and it gives me a better spin , just as much if not more power and is the only way I can ride a bike without pain in my knees. I ride a recumbent now as it is far more comfortable than any upright bike and yes I enjoy speed as well. I can not do a full squat and get up again without assistance but I can do a half squat and that is what the shorter crank arms do for you. Less flex of the knee and more power range. The absolute cheapest way to try shorter cranks is take the B/B and cranks off a kids 24" wheeled bicycle and switch them for yours. Yes they are like Lead alloy but the idea here is to see the difference not worry about competing on the Tour De France, and it may take a week to get used to them. Some people love them and others see no difference, I of course am the former.
nice! I have pain in front of my knee, now I realized that my saddle is too much forward and a little low... THANK YOU! You have earned one more subscriber right after tis video :D. Thank you from Brazil.
Beginners cyclists like me, such a information help me to improve my riding. Thanks.
Nice informative video,
Not sure why bike designers do not pay attention because lately they all pushing towards a steeper seat tube angle apparently to help paddling efficiency but this creates another issue ie: making the knees go way passed the tip of the crank arms!
I tried moving the saddle back but that still not enough to remedy the problem!
I'm 175cm tall and riding a transition patrol 2019 and that thing has a 77+ degree seat tube angle! And this also mean that I could not use my favourite 165mm length crankset either!!
I have been tinkering with position for about 25 years. i think I have finally found it. Here we go: 1) have saddle totally level. Not even 3mm up or down. Then place saddle height so you can JUST pedal backwards withyour HEELS on the pedals, without your hips rocking. Might be best to go up til hips do rock, then go down til they dont. Sanity check: hip pain= too low, back of leg and glute pain= too high.. Then put the saddle as far forward as you can without getting neck or shoulder pain after 2 hours (not less), or any front of knee pain. Then just put the bars where they are most comfotable in all postions. Will prob be about 1 or 2 inches below saddle. Ideally you can ride on the brake hoods, but dont go below a 9cm stem to get that. That's it! Dont be afraid to shove cleats all the way back in their slots to get foot well over pedal
Thanks for sharing, Davies.
I was advised against short stems on a road bike but found a 7 degree 80mm stem to dramatically improve my cycling enjoyment, stability and comfort after many incremental tweaks and decreases including flipping stems and messing with stack heights, I think your 25 years of tinkering sum up the fact that perfect bike fit is really hard to dial down and is very specific to the rider
I agree with Michael; all the tips help a bit, but at the end you only get it right by experience
bike-fitting, at least the internet type, didn't help me at all. the handlebar always ends up being way too high
@TEFL, when you say "pedal backward with your HEELS on the pedals", this should be done with my shoes on?
Awesome 👏 vid! Thank you! Made few adjustments and going for a ride.
Thank you for this video of information very vital to me I have a couple of injuries in the past to my knees mostly on the right knee and I have arthritis on both knees however I spoke to my doctor about it and he implied adjusting my seat! now that you broke this information down I'll try it the next time I bike ride. I'm horrible on the littlest hill and incline I tried but my knees gives! I'm going to keep trying!
Thank you for your video. Simple explanations. I've been experiencing pain in my left knee. I now know what to do. Thanks
Thank you for the info about cleat position. I'm experiencing pain on the left part of my left knee. While riding uphill yesterday, it was so painful. Will re-align my cleats again.
Make bike fit. I was positioning saddle and cleats a year, but still felt pain. Then i did a bike fit and now i have less pain, i can't tell you that no pain at all, but less
Simple to understand and very interesting
Whenever I search on an important issue about cycling, your videos always come up as the best and most accurate ones. I freaking love you Danny. I wish you all the best.

You're the nicest Polish man ever. Well done sir.
You are spot on; however, you left too many questions unanswered, which definitely kept some growth opportunities for your channel, go away.
very informative! my knees hurts on the outside. left leg. i thought my left knee is just weak.
I actually went to the doc and he didn't catch on to any of this happening. Got some clips to force my foot into a specific placement and seems to be much better. Still happens, but not nearly as bad.
I've lateral Knee pain and your video helps.
if your tip on cleat position solves the pain on the outside of my knees i will be SO happy!
Nice video. I would add saddle height as well.
thanks for good explanation about what exactly cause pain in different areas of knees, at the moment I am strugling with front pain, I've noticed my saddle is just 1-2cm too low and it needed to be more to the back, I am taking rest while I reposition everything on my bike so will see if it becomes any better in next few days
I am also not flexible person and my core is pretty weak so I guess that's another issue :(
anyways thanks for the video!
You might also consider shorter crank arms as this will reduce the flex of your knee. I had 170 mm and now ride with 153 mm ,all the power and a better spin.
well after a month from this comment I found very good position on my bike, the trick was to raise the saddle just slightly above the recommended height, I have no more knee pain and I am ridding 3x longer distances comparing to before when I was ridding a little bit and I had a lot of pain
Thanks a lot!!! It's was very helpful for me. Today have strached flexor, and know I do understand why. Thanks again 👊🏻🚴🙏🏻
Just come across your useful videos, subscribed.
I had pain behind the knee and I'm pretty sure it was because my seat was too low. I raised my seat considerably and seem to have less pain.
It went together easily in less than an hour. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Your channel is very helpful and informative. Awesome!
Tanx! And those drop bars are exactly what I need. Might you mention their maker, please? Sempre avanti, from SW FL, USA

Good morning, I had a guru bike fit an electronic bike fit they said my inseam was 740mm, but if I use the method as you say I get an inseam of 710mm, that’s 30mm less then the electronic Guru fit
Very good explanation
Thanks for the video. Especially helpful and simply explained
Truly good connected and understandable explained. Thank you!
liked for no nonsense and straight to the point
Thanks from Turkey. I loved your videos and I'll share
Thx very much for your help. I can ride again without kneepain!!
Excellent explanation! Thank you
Great overview of knee issues, I appreciated the level of detail you discussed the anatomy. Thumbs up!!
That was so helpful! Thank you and great job on the English!
Excellent explanation. Thank you
Very well explained.
Awesome video mate. Thank you.
thanks for the information brother! mabuhay from philippines! Ride safe!
Your channel is great, keep up the good work. Hope you can answer this question, when making adjustments to seat hight and positioning should one go 1 mm at a time until the perfect spot is reached? I think I'm close but in the last few days I've started feeling pain on the outside front of my right knee so probably need to lower seat hight and push is back a bit?
Straight to the point information! Great video!
"Just put the saddle in the right position" is a very easy thing to say. But how do u know if its in the right position?
Great videos. thanks from Canada
my right foot toes point to the right and still knee hurts on the outside
Is there some way, to measure your leg's length by yourself? I guess, that it can't be done too easily with just measuring with a measure tape.. because there isn't clear axles where to measure between.. Is it more like a feel like thing. Like if you feel that you need to have one shoe cleat further forward than other, then it might be different length of femur, or something like that.
I should do more exercises and stretching. But so often it's difficult to find time for it, and to do it effectively.. To know what exercises to do and to do the ones that really needed.. to use time effectively.
Hey really informative video man. Had a long ride on my mountain bike .. haven't switched to clipless pedals yet.. so i have flat pedals it was like 100 miles i only anticipated around 80 last 20 miles on the way back the outside of my knee started hurting. Barely made it home. No real pain now I do 5\7 miles a day just stretching since the last few days. Barely swollen knee cap. Feels like some tissue under the cap and when I bend my knee on the upper outer corner of the knee I can feel it preclicking.
I'm trying to kinda give myself probable cause any suggestions?
Thinking ITD, Patellar tendon or patellar ligament.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated as well as some recovery suggestions.
Thank you! Stay strong

Can riding a mountain bike with 2.2 tires on road be a reason for knee pain because of the high rolling resistance of the wide tires?
Such a good video thank you
Great video. 👍
I cycle all the time but I am having to take a break while my knee gets sorted, I have a bakers cyst and have just had an MRI scan to see what the next move will be, has anyone experienced this through cycling or do you know of anyone else..
Thanks for the video, good knowledge experience!
Thanks for great video
Buenas tardes no lo tienen en Español gracias
Thank you for the great videos! I have a problem with my right knee though and I can't seem to find a solution. The thing is that my right leg is not straight, but "bent" inwards just a little bit. I got a bike fit done by a professional but I still get right knee pain and lower back pain sometimes, just at the beginning of my rides. After 15km or so everything seems to be fine though, but I never rode more than a 50k. I am new to the sport but I really love it and I don't want to get injured.. Any advice?
You've given us very little info and I certainly don't see you on the bike. Factors to consider: left / right leg length comparison, muscle strength (especially quadriceps heads), any injuries in the past?
SickBiker thank you for the answer! I have never been injured on the knee, but I broke a small bone in my right foot 12 years ago. The right knee hasn't been straight since birth, so I guess it's slightly shorter than the other one (I'll measure). There is a side to side movement on the right knee while pedaling. How much strength should I have? The best I did produce has been 400w, in the saddle, according to Strava (I know it's not accurate but that's all I have..). I am 28, 77kg and 172cm, I can squat my body weight no problem. I know it's super hard to give advice without seeing a person but any tips would be greatly appreciated! I have booked a sport physician visit too
how about the pain in the uper part of the knee, what its cause? and how to avoid it?
thank you
Awesome help
Thank you!!
Really true mate!
Great vid,really good info.thanx
Thanks man, this was very helpful.
Very good video !!
Wouldn't crank length also be a factor?
thanks dude !!
Hi
I am new to bike riding , recently I have been getting pain on my right knee on the outside,
I use to have normal flat pastels with trainers but recently moved over to cleats with lock-in panels, and I have had bike fit done from my local shop and I am still getting same pane, any advise ?
I don't know whether you will still be looking at comments on this video but I have a question.
When i got my first road bike, when I hadn't cycled before, I got a bike fit from Giant. Since then, only recently, I have started riding on the drops a lot more. As a consequence of riding on the drops I have twice developed swelling over/under the knee cap (twice in the space of a week, typically it will take 4 days for swelling and pain to stop).
Would you advise a refit as I will probably have changed my riding position since I started?
Hello. At 5:23 in your video you are touching your knee. I get pain right there after i have been cycling. But i can get my toes to point more out. Any tips?
excellent 👍
Thanks.
so simple... GREAT THANKS!
Thanks for watching!
Helpful thank you
Great!
I have some pretty bad inner knee pain, and I've noticed that I point my toes away from the bike naturally due to some traumatic injuries to my left leg and hip. I think I'm supposed to point the cleat more straight forward, but I have trouble lining up my knee with the ball of my foot. Anything I can do?
What's up Brian! Forcing your toes to a certain position may not be the idea, but your injury may be the key factor here and I would work my position on the bike around that factor. So, is it only one or both knees that hurt? How did your hip injury affected the LENGTH of your leg (super important!)? How does your flexibility look like? The muscles around the injury area get tight can cause many pain issues. So I would definitely start by finding out, whether you need any spacers for under the cleat on one side and I recommend lots of stretching exercises.
