In a matter of minutes, Metric singer Emily Haines and guitarist James Shaw went from rocking in front of thousands of fans on the main stage of the Sasquatch Music Festival to hiking through a rumored thicket of rattlesnakes overlooking the Columbia River. The duo gamely made the trek for an acoustic performance of "Synthetica," the title track from Metric's new record.
Stripped of an electric guitar and moody reverb, Haines and Shaw performed a version of the song pretty enough to challenge the sweeping sunset behind them. There couldn't have been a more appropriate backdrop for Haines' refrain, "Hey, I'm not synthetica."

Her voice is unbelievable.
One of the most underrated bands IMO. Love listening to them. That's the true test of a band is that their tunes pass the test of time, and they do.
Reeeeeeeeee
I’ve been a fan for YEARSSS and they always come out with hit after hit! Always something new. Just saw them live last night and it was KILLER!
Her voice is stronger than ever, i'm just in awe.
I like the way the sun shines thru her heels. But most of all, I love this song.
one of the most beautiful voices i've heard in a long time. amazing music, amazing landscape..
A Canadian bird turned me onto these guys. This was back in 2006, she was like "do you like Metric?" I was like bitch, this is the USA we use the Imperial system. And she was like no no you fucking idiot, the band!
bst cnverstion ever
haha too funny!
Ok I lol'd in French
Voice of an angel. The kind of voice that if it told me everything is gonna be OK, I would believe it.
Expensive mic's go along way. Plus Emily's voice is el natural, along with that handsome guitarist.
the song, the chords, her voice, the landscape... this video makes me feel renewed
This is an amazing recording for being outside on a windy, noisy hill.
I just found this song but I believe I could listen to this everyday.
I keep coming back to this field recording. Best one ever. Great work, NPR Music!
I'm loving this song and her voice is beautiful
One of my favorite voices :)
Field Recording (Unplugged) is one of the only true ways to tell if musicians are "Musicians" :)
synthetica is in my top 5 favourite albums of all time. SO good
If you haven't seen them play live... Go, now! They're the only band I will travel out of the country for. When they riff on "Dead Disco" live it's otherworldly.
Ever since I clicked on Dry The River at SXSW, Field Recordings are my new favorite thing.
So good. That voice though. Give me chills.
Beautiful setting, love the song, very pretty singing and a lovely sounding Gibson...reallty like the lyrics..I am not "synthetcia"....I would go and see them live!
Sounds beautiful it's awesome
her voice is so beautiful
That's one hell of a microphone and zeppelin.
I saw them two days ago. They are awesome!
holy crap this is cool
Soooo pretty!
What a voice!
can't
stop
listening!!!!
keep replay this song
amazingly beautiful
That song is pure gold
Don't we all love her...and he watches her to time his chord changes :D I think...
This voice!!!
EXCELENT CHOICE OF ENVIROMENT, Siento la suave brisa sobre esos acordes, me encanta!
song and video is first class.
superb idea !!
this video is soo o sooo great.
perfect connection between music perform and a sunset
amazing :) They were so good. I remember that motorized hang glider steal the spotlight during The Shins haha
Beautiful bareness, beautiful shots.
I forgot about this gem 🫶🙌
Emily's voice sounds incredible on this recording. Crisp af.
I love how a lot of the video is the flying motorcycle
I liked it, good voice & a nice song.
Oh, the voice. The voice...like melting chocolate.
Some of us are wild ones, ever under wanted,
I believe
Lining up in the background,
Waiting for the crap shot to be seen
In the shadow of the big screen,
Everybody begs to be redeemed
Hey, I'm not Synthetica
I'll keep the life that I've got
We were never meant to crawl in for the bait,
We never will
I can think for myself,
I've got something no pill could ever kill
Hey, I'm not Synthetica, oh
I'll keep the life that I've got, oh
So hard, hard to resist Synthetica, oh
No drug is stronger than me, Synthetica
We're all the time confined to fit the mold
But I won't ever let them make a loser of my soul
Hey, I'm not Synthetica, oh
I'll keep the life that I've got, oh
I'll keep the life that I've got
I'll keep the life that I've got
I'll keep the life that I've got
How does this not have more views!
Her shoes are beautiful haha
Starts at 1:19
i love the metric
This should have at least 20 million views. I hate the world.
❤️❤️❤️
She is so cool.
This video is sensational. Oooohhhhh...
speechless...
Love the closing comment:
"That's one fluffy little dude...man.."
Hope he was talking about the mic
better than their full accompanied stuff; would kill to see an all acoustic set from these guys...(do it)!
sweet
Dude looks like Mat Kearney :)
Like this much! :)
The reverb sounds like they're in a small room, like a studio. It doesn't sound like they're outside at all. I could be wrong, but it's still great either way.
Outstanding! What mic are they using for this Field recoding?
@hereitgosagain12 I think that's just great micing. I talked to the mixer.
"It's a motorcycle."
thats the work of very good mic, a good portable recorder and a great sound tech guy in charge
I can't get over that ONE note he messes up near the beginning.
1:24 dont mind me just a bookmark for myself
What they need is a bush to run the mic thru and a Mic cover shaped like a squirrel. LOL
Field recorder? You can get great sound on a stage in a field (e.g. any outdoor music festival ever) do they sound shitty because they are outside? No, right? Whatever you use to record live inside also works outside too :)
she's beautiful. I don't really dig the rest of the band Metric music...but this recording was fantastic
Is this dubbed? Sound seems too good to be true.
you really can get this quality from a field recorder?
I thought i was going to be big shot music guy and say no, but i honestly can't tell.
I didn't even notice it was DIed. That would explain it.
lol
I guess they just had really fancy mics and amps...
you see that mic in front of her face? the fuzzy compressor mic? yea... that's the kind of sound quality you get
AM F C HOLY FUCK
It kind of sounds like poli from zoe.
maybe he loves her
What a stupid thing to say, I didn't comment on the Gorge so that has no relevance what so ever. He did in fact claim that its fake so i was telling him why it sounds so good.
of course its real, its recorded with a shotgun microphone and his guitar is DI'd. If you don't know what any of that means you shouldn't have commented in the first place.
ok so we're all here now?
Emily, I must have you.
Sweet voice. The mic looks like an angry muppet. Yay Canada.
The guitar is DI'ed, if you look.
Doubtful. NPR is legit. Also Metric is always super tight so they sound just as good live as in person.
i dont believe that theyre that good, this is crazy
Just because its a field recording doesnt mean it hasnt been enhanced in a studio.
The way he looks at her during the whole song is a kinda creepy, but the song is great.
endeavorband no, your creepy to project that on him and obviously not a musician.
He's doing that to help keep time and make sure that they're on the same page.
I hope they arrested that guy. What if he crashed into the stage and killed The Shins? That would've sucked.
Pretty weak Cat Powers knock off.
