    (more items to be released during the week, so make sure you follow me on Depop if you had your eye on anything from the video!)
    I am so excited to share this episode with you, I have put A LOT of work into this, and I really hope it helps to inspire you to declutter your own wardrobe properly and with a plan!
    Honestly, having a plan made this declutter so easy! Every time I picked up a sentimental item, or an item I had spent a lot of money on, I didn't waste time going back and forth in my mind about whether to keep it or not. The planning I did before this #wardrobedeclutter made my decisions so much easier to make.
    This is episode 4 of "Finding My Personal Style again" series #FMPSA

      I love this series and how careful and thoughtful you are with taking the time to really decide what you love! It's interesting to see how many of my friends here on UA-cam are doing this too, myself included. I haven't done it yet but have a video in the works. I'm inspired by your methods to get clear on your syle! Great work sister. FYI: I would keep your grandma's floral blouse! I love it and it's sentimental.

    I also find that since I have changed my clothes hangers to all the same ... it has really helped with the visual clutter and sense of disorder I faced when opening my wardrobe. Having all my clothes hanging at the same colour hanger at the same level really helped to reduce my sense of overwhelm of feeling my wardrobe was unplanned and disorganised. 🍓

      I so agree with this tip. I did the same and could not believe what a difference it made, seeing everything on the one level and not being distracted by different colour/style of hangers, who would have thought it would make such an impact? 😃

    This is the best decluttering video, like everything is so intentional !! And love what you re doing with your maybe pile, instead of just trying the items on again and décide you are going to give them à real shot !! So excited to watch your next vidéos 🤍

    Loved watching you go through the blazers bc you really captured the emotional stuff about letting things go. Talking through is helpful to show how to come to a good decision even if you're still feeling the feelings.

    Love 2 tips.. The jeans and cardigan tip and the maybe pile. I tend to keep some of the things I love that don't quite get worn,in hopes that it will expand my horizons a bit. I think the older we grow the more we reach for comfort.

    I did the same decluttering through my no buy year - turned out it wasnt a no buy but a "buy what you need - sell the rest" year😁🌞
    Its amazing how having a little shopping breather can reset your feelings.
    For me at least.
    Now its more clear for me what colors, cuts and fabrics I like and now my secondhand shopping is not just me impulse buying everything I like because it is "inexpensive" ☺
    Would you ever do a pant/jeans guide?
    It is the thing I find the hardest to find.
    And maybe how you get your tailored?
    Your channel brings me a lot of joy🥀

    I just turned 65 and I have to declutter, downsize, and really take a good look as to why it is in my wardrobe.
    Thank you for your inspiration and honesty.

    I find it hard to throw anything. On other hand my mom loves to declutter and she easily throws things. Her way of doing it is taking pictures of it, if it's a bill of the restaurant we loved she clicks a photo and throw it out, if it is a dress she takes pictures of her wearing it and then throw or give it away. Other tips from my mom would be she finds other way to remember the memory attached to it. Rather keeping the bills of the restaurant we went she remembers the laughter we had in it or the food. I don't know if it helps but just try to replace the memories and sentiment with other quantities.
    P.S. This method doesnot help me but it could help you. I grew up in a flat, we often moved our house so I didnot had a fixed place to call home or childhood neighborhood. When you feel nothing is fixed in your life you tend to hold onto things so that you can have something permanent.

    One thing that you said that really stood out for me was that there were items that you LOVED but you were letting them go because you just don’t wear them. Thank you for that! I think that is going to be quite helpful for me.

    I loved this series, great job Emily! Personal style is something that evolves, and adapts with our lifestyle. I think there are always basics that stick with us, but age, career, children, location, body changes, comfort, are factors that influence our style over the years. A personal tip is to take a bit of time twice a year to go through our wardrobe and refer to our planning. This keeps the process easier and quicker 😊

    I'm such a softie and esp since both my parents have passed, I won't ever be parting with the sentimental clothes I have of theirs. That said, they take up a lot of space. I'm considering sending those clothes to be made into a blanket/quilt. You can do the same with t-shirts (which I did with all my college shirts), and I've been looking for a seamstress who's willing to patch together a bunch of random clothes in different fabrics. That way I'm not contributing to waste, I gain some much needed storage space, and I get to keep my sentimental items.

    Your wardrobe & style is different than mine but I relate so much with the thought process you describe and I find it so helpful to hear it and see how you apply it to your own personal situation as I’m preparing to do my own decluttering soon. I didn’t realise the frustration I felt actually came from the anxiety I too feel over having too many pieces in my wardrobe that no longer represent my current lifestyle needs or wishes and that asking yourself the right questions will help provide the needed clarity. I love how you explain that just because you love a piece or because you spent a lot of money on it, still doesn’t justify keeping it if it doesn’t serve your lifestyle anymore.

    I decluttered my wardrobe 3 times at 3 months intervals. I purchased some new clothes then realised that I always seem to wear the same few favorite items. I don't have many items in my wardrobe any more but all the new items haven't been worn.
    This was a huge learning curve. Carry on with your declutter, new style videos. I could have learnt more sooner. Xx

    Great video!
    My wardrobe is so similar. I have so many items I love - however they fit the more "fantasy" Emily and I just don't wear them. If I've learnt anything it's to invest in classic pieces and think very carefully if I can see myself wearing a "trend" piece long term and if it will age well (see: Trigger trackies circa 2007)

    Great video. I am working on a wardrobe inventory and going through my summer things. I have sold a heap of t-shirts, tops and skirts that my 'fantasy' me liked. As we head into autumn, I am looking at my jackets(many are thrited)..so many, but I rarely pick them. Just looking at them brings me joy! I have decided to take them to the dry cleaner and get them in tip top shape to be ready in my closet. Come spring, anything that didn't get out and about, will be sold!

    This is the best declutter video I have watched. I really like your lists and that you had your inspiration Pinterest board for reference. Also the things you learn was brilliant. I need to do a bit of declutter as well. I no longer work and do not need all those nice things as I really have no place to wear them. I just need a small collection of event pieces as there are those events I go to on occasion. My life really is soooooo casual. I usually go to my shop where I quilt my quilts and sew for my brother's business and do not need anything fancy, mostly just want to be comfortable. Dressing up only to go grocery shopping and maybe out for a casual dinner.
    All that said I do have a small collection of vintage things I will never declutter because when there is a place to wear them they are so unique and awesome I feel great in them. I do need to let go of the fantasy self though and embrace the jeans and t-shirt more as the real me.

    This is so helpful! Thank you. Emily I would love you to do a video on knowing the difference between your fantasy self and your real ideal. I have clothes in my closet that I have not worn in 1.5 years because I tell myself that due to Covid I don't have places to wear them - those clothes I love represent my work life before Covid. Now people are dressing much more informally and I am not sure those lovely suits and jackets will come back into the norm. Do I let them go or hang on to them in anticipation of when they do come back? I've been following the "if it sparks joy, keep it" thinking but maybe that is past joy and not something I need now? How do I make this determination? Thank you for your excellent videos! So glad I found you!

    I can so relate to hanging on to things because they are an item that other people wear well,yet on our own self they don't feel right. That said, I have a few odd things that I reach for constantly, even though they are missing things. Case in point, a flattering but pocketless denim jacket - it just looks good on me and works so well with floaty dresses. Can't part with it even though I have two others (with pockets).

      @EmilyElizabethMay  3 роки тому

      Yes this is a good idea, I’ve actually worn that together before! However it wasn’t my favourite outfit. The camisole is very cropped and doesn’t stay in the skirt well enough, and the skirt is a little big on me as well. It just didn’t look great. I’d also love to move away from so much black and I think a black silky dress gives off a different look to a coloured one. Xx

    One comment is that I think you should sell your greyish blazers because you have such a lovely tawny look and I don't think the grey plays to those strengths. But I must say I did like that black velvet blazer because I like anything artistic or boho leaning...

    • @EmilyElizabethMay
      @EmilyElizabethMay  3 роки тому +2

      This is a great observation and it’s funny you say this.... over the past few years I’ve slowly got rid of all my grey clothes because they didn’t feel quite right on me. I always watched “essentials” videos and say “grey t-shirt” or “grey jumper” as an essential and thought I needed it, but truth is, these videos can be dangerous if we don’t think about our own personal colouring etc. thanks for bringing this to my attention because I’ll make sure to never push colours on people in my future videos 🥰♥️🙏🏽

    For an item that is so sentimental but I need to let it go, if its like a color of fabric I love, I like to cut it to make it into a little hair scarf or other accessory so I can still enjoy it

      Hi lovely! I sell a lot on Depop! I find it a really easy platform to use and lots of people using it where I am. Otherwise I donate my clothes to charities that I know will make sure they don't end up in landfill. One here in Australia is called Upparel. xx 💗

    Funny again, my silk skirts and tops are the backbone of my wardrobe! But, I am very much a skirt and dress gal. What is more personal than a wardrobe?

    Why u will sell it if you can donate what you dont need😅

    • @EmilyElizabethMay
      @EmilyElizabethMay  Рік тому

      Good question. I don’t like to overwhelm donations shops. I sell a few items and donate others. Not everything that gets donated ends up getting sold in store and a lot ends up in landfill. So I prefer to try sell some things first where I know they’re getting used 😊❤️ x

    I wanted to enjoy this but the anti-KonMari mentions (even thumbnail!) gave it an uncomfortable vibe.

      I’m sorry you feel this way. I love Marie Kondo, I mentioned that in the thumbnail and the video. Her method is so popular, I just wanted to offer an alternative for people seeking a different approach. It was by no means meant to offend, my intentions were to be helpful.

    Interesting, I hate jeans. I never found a single pair I like, I’m 61 years old. So, I’ve finally decided to stop wasting money on them. If that’s your whole wardrobe, that’s not very much. I have rail after rail.
