- The Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is conceivably one of the most celebrated and recognisable female artists that the world has yet known. Considered nowadays to be an icon that only continues to inspire millions around the world increasingly over time with the artwork she produced, most significantly within her many, surreal and colourful self-portraits.
Fascinatingly, her work would remain obscured and nearly completely forgotten until towards the end of the 20th century, when art historians would bring her work to the surface. Not only because of her unique style of painting, but due to her passionate, undying political and social beliefs throughout her adult life, she has long since been recognized as a crucial, inspirational figure within feminism, the LGBTQ community and of course, the history of Mexican peoples.
The many surprises that creep up in Kahlo’s life to those wanting to know more is nearly endless. From her sexuality to her disabilities, to her grotesque and abusive husband, there truly is so much to uncover. Which is why for this video series, we will be looking at not only her artwork in-depth, but also her life story, in hopes that we can leave no stone unturned. How exactly was Kahlo so ahead of her time? What was it about her that made her virtually an outcast during her lifetime, but a celebrated enigma for today’s current society long after her death?

As a physically disabled artist who has gone through 9 back surgeries and has suffered from ailments from childhood up into my 30s so far... fuck anybody that says Frida doesn't deserve praise. She is literally a voice and representation for people like me.
She is an absolute inspiration and overcame nothing but struggles.

I find this a particularly hard watch, I'm an artist who had life changing multiple injuries in 1977, and unbelievably more accidents later leading to a life of pain... I am currently working on a Triptych and on one panel I am featuring Frida. I admire her courage so much ❤❤
The movie Frida & the book on which it is based are far more accurate, having had some involvement/feedback from the family, when u are feeling up to going there. no disrespect to the makers intended.

The Broken Column brings water to my eyes every time I see it. The pain from the hands that painted this portrait are so tangible, looking into her eyes feels like an assault of screaming out in pain, quietly. It makes me cry, for her.

That painting is like her own crucifixion. Only people that have suffered that much can understand such painting.
On top of unspeakable physical problems, I'm disturbed with the emotional pain she also endured.
This video moved me. If anyone has suffered it was this woman. Using her art to express herself, I found it moving and beautiful. One of the paintings made me break down and cry.

This is beautiful! I now understand her paintings. As many of us can relate to certain aspects of her pain. I've had chronic back pain for decades and endure it while working and creating art. Plus, the trauma bond of her relationship(s), her political views and understanding of capitalism. She was/is remarkable. Thank you for sharing ❤🙏❤

What a fascinating story and lady. As a fellow disabled person, chronic pain sufferer. A woman who has is under going numerous health issues. Fellow artist related to Norfolk landscape artist, John Chrome. I would be delighted if you would consider telling his story. He is/ was responsible for opening the Norwich School of Art. Excuse my cheeky request but no harm in asking. He is also did pub signs and one of my interests is finding out which ones still exist. Thank you very for telling Frida Kahio's story. What a beautiful woman and an amazing story. I stopped solid tyres on the wheelchair, it must have been an horrendous experience for her. I spend a lot of time in bed and I also draw lying down. Xx

How Frida Kahlo managed to live a life suffering with chronic and emotional pain is beyond me. The inner strength she possessed came through her paintings that are beautiful, tragic and haunting. Her husband Diego only added to her agony.

Very touching
Intentionally getting preggers for monster of a man after having lived with the pelvic surgeries and nearly dying bringing forth life she knew had barely a chance to give birth to, I have after seeing countless docs on her lost alot of my worship and now just give her respect for still doing good and in end regaining her self worth outside of that man.

Very nicely done documentary! I am also an artist, and drawing Frida is one of my upcoming projects. I love the way you tied her paintings to the time and emotions she was experiencing. Seems like she had a very wrong impression of Love, because she never saw anyone around her being in love, that's what made her fall for the "Boy Frog".

Even though I don't agree with Frida's political ideas I do admire her very much. Her life story is very inspiring, it's almost unbelivable the amount of pain that she went trough all her life. In my opinion she is one of the greatest artists the world has ever known and deserves to be admired. This documentary is excelent, thank you for making this video, your channel is very underrated, this definently deserves more attention.♡

I recommend you do a video on Stephen Kasner, he was a famous artist from Cleveland known for his dark surrealism imagery and style.
His style is similar to that of Francisco Goya.
He killed himself in 2019 and no one knows exactly why.
He did many album covers for many musical artists and also made some paintings for the frontman of Korn (that he didn't give him any payment for supposedly)
Most of his artwork were also Tattoo art as well.
My mother has a tattoo of his artwork on her arm, it's an armless torso sitting on a chair around a wall of hooks and weapons.

I love your videos and I wanted to recommend you another two female artists that were revolutionary. Georgia O'Keeffe and Hilma af Klint. Thank you for doing such an amazing job!
FYI - Most people don't know Georgia O'Keeffe was a hardcore narcissist bully who made her sister, Ida, stop painting cuz she wanted to be the only painter in her family. Her family called her Peaches and were afraid of her tantrums.
( Pablo Picasso was a narcissist and a misogynist, too. )

I have always struggled with how to persuade art which I like that comes from artists that were not very good people but then I came across a quote from Nick Cave and it helped me to overcome it (sometimes :):
"I don’t think we can separate the art from the artist, nor should we need to. I think we can look at a piece of art as the transformed or redeemed aspect of an artist, and marvel at the miraculous journey that the work of art has taken to arrive at the better part of the artist’s nature. Perhaps beauty can be measured by the distance it has travelled to come into being.
That bad people make good art is a cause for hope. To be human is to transgress, of that we can be sure, yet we all have the opportunity for redemption, to rise above the more lamentable parts of our nature, to do good in spite of ourselves, to make beauty from the unbeautiful, and to have the courage to present our better selves to the world."
@@TheTarotDJ333Really? I never returned her coffee table style book to the library when in art school in 1975…and looked at her work constantly until throwing out the book in the 90’s. I never knew that about her.

I am also an artist with significant cervical spine problems...2 neck surgeries but continuing pain. It never occurred to me to paint numerous self portraits of my pain ala Frida Kahlo. They are beautiful, of course, but self indulgent. Personally I prefer her still lives snd and political illustrations. I enjoy painting other people's portraits. It's hard to get people to sit for you. I take their photos and then use them to create art. It actually gets me out of myself for a while.

Well that was an interesting rendition of Frida's strange life. She seemed to endure so much tragedy, unhappiness, unfaithfulness, stabbed in the back by so called friends and even her own sister. It appeared that she was always seeking comfort and inner peace but never really found it. I do not know why she married that awful philanderer who played around with anyone he so desired. He did bring her a little hapiness in the beginning of the relationship but it did not last long as both had other 'wants' sexually in their lives. Awful that she contracted syphillis towards the end and all those operations and sufferering. It makes me wonder how she was still able to paint so well right up to her departure of life. I really was intrigued how she mastered her paintings and portraits full of her mind, spirit and feelings deep within them. RIP forever Frida.

I think this is a very sensitive tribute to this artist and you are right...the eye of the beholder is always the judge of what is deemed as art
I have adored Frida since the 1970's before a lot of people knew about her. I did an illustrated report on her in my art history class. One of Rivera's huge murals hung in the theatre building of the college I was going to, San Francisco City CollI met one of Rivera's models who was quite a well&nown artist herself at a gathering...not that I got to lnow her, she was in her 80's I believe. Its terrible I can't remember her name. Kahlo's crotics are totally offbase. Its art that clutches at your heart.
