    Dude, excellent video. Just recently, I had a John Deere x380 (in great condition) given to me; friends are moving and didn't want to take it. Anyway, I decided to give it a whirl. I already have a couple riding mowers, so I was thinking of just selling it and donating the proceeds to charity. So I cut my yard with it and parked it. It ran great. I went to move it into my shed a while later and it wouldn't start. I jumped it, but it died almost immediately. I read the manual and saw that the battery charging area of the console indicated that it would not charge correctly. It indicates this before actually starting the mower. So I did a search and here I am. I swapped in another batter that I had on one of the other mowers and, prior to trying to turn it over, the indicator on the console showed that it would charge correctly. The funny thing is that the battery that was in the system before showed higher cold voltage than this one that I'd just put in. The old battery showed 12.6 whereas the new one showed 12.3. My guess is that there's a bad cell in the old battery and that prevents it from starting at all. So... I cranked it up with the swapped battery and checked voltage at the battery. It was showing slightly over 14 so I guess it's charging just fine. With your instructions, I stopped right there and I'll just get a new battery.
    Anyway, I really appreciate your video. Instructions are very clear and straight forward. Thanks a bunch!!

    Awesome. I just confirmed that my stator is good on my 2003 John Deere SST15 lawnmower. Must be the v. regulator. Thanks!

    There are a lot of videos, on a lot of subjects, imparting a good deal of information. Too many lack good production, organization and planning. My PTO was cutting out so I watch your one on PTOs, then this one. My battery is relatively new, three months old, but was constantly dead and I needed to jump the system. I've replaced a voltage regulator on another mower, and it looks like I'll be replacing it on this mower. Thank you for great videos, as @DougDobak said, "clear and concise"!

    Great advice. I have an older Simplicity and thought I had 2 separate problems, low charging and blades not engaging. It turns out that a newer, heathy battery and a charging system that is working, fixed both issues. Thanks for videos.

    I can’t get the mower to turn over. Sounded like a weak batter so I put a brand new one. Sounded way better but couldn’t turn over. Next day, ZERO. Not even clicking.

      @@Mechanical_Mind You are making my life at home a lot easier, I mow 20 acres and this is the start of the wet season in the tropical north of Australia, left unchecked some of our spear grasses grow to 10-12 ft easily, which then brings in a huge fuel load during bushfire season, so i aim to keep it short. Your tip about the fuel pump was passed on to a mate who had just noticed his mower beginning to blow smoke so I reckon you saved his engine! Cheers

      Yeah its not too bad. The stator will be under the flywheel. Just kinda time consuming. I drive a few chisels under the flywheel to apply pressure to lift it up then tap the crankshaft with a hammer ( after removing the nut) and that usually will remove the flywheel.

    • @Mechanical_Mind

      If your stator is making 40 volts AC but your battery is not getting 14 volts DC the only thing it could be is a bad voltage regulator or a loose connection. If the wires are burned that is most likely also from a faulty voltage regulator or loose connection. Also make sure your ground connections are not loose or corroded.

    @mechanicalmind my husqvarna yth2348 blade disengaged while mowing then the motor stalled out like it was running out of gas. Once the engine shut off, nothing worked, will not crank. I installed a new battery but still nothing, no lights or hour meter working. All the grounds appear to be secure. Any suggestions?

    • @Mechanical_Mind
      @Mechanical_Mind  2 місяці тому

      I bet it's the charging system is not working. You should have a 20 amp fuse close to the battery. It's probably blown. If that is the case then after you put in a new fuse it should crank up and then you need to use a multimeter to check if the charging system is working.
      At half to full throttle you should get close to 14 volts from the battery while the engine is running. If it's just 12v or less while the engine is running then your charging system isn't working.
      Here is a video showing how to diagnose the charging system.

      If it blows a new fuse instantly then you have a short somewhere. Let me know you find. It's probably something simple. Hopefully the electric clutch isn't bad

    • @wendellwarr
      @wendellwarr 2 місяці тому

      @@Mechanical_Mind Fuse was blown, changed it and it cranked without any issues. Charging system appears to be working, 13.56 volts. What do you suppose could have caused the fuse to blow? I did find 2 wires going to one of the headlights were just bare laying inside of the hood but the lights were not on. Could it have shorted with the switch off?

    • @wendellwarr

      The mower has 300+ hours on it.

    • @Mechanical_Mind
      @Mechanical_Mind  2 місяці тому +1

      @wendellwarr I'm going to guess that your clutch got too hot. It might blow the fuse again after you cut a while.
      At 300 hours, I would expect the clutch bearings to be almost done. They start getting hotter and faster the more they wear. So check your clutch.
      Also give a good inspection to the all the wire connections. Make sure they are clean and tight. Just loosening and tightening them back will usally clean them enough to make a bad connection good again
      I spray wd40 on the connections and plug and blow them out with compressed air. Wd40 will not hurt anything and will help loosen dirt and rust.

    • @Mechanical_Mind

      That makes no sense. There is no way it could legitimately stay at 14v if nothing is charging it. 🤔 I have no clue
