I was listening to this song in my family room once, and my mom heard it and asked what it was because she really liked it. I then heard her listen to it every morning in the bathroom while she was getting ready for work and I was getting ready for school. It made me really happy that she like Jon and listened to him every day. Whenever I played it, she wouldn’t stop talking about how much she liked it. She passed away at 42 last year, and it kills me to listen to this song now. She was the most amazing, caring woman on this planet. We had thousands show up to her funeral because of how influential she was. I cry every time I listen to this song. I miss her so much and this song makes me feel like she’s still here with me. I love you mom and I love you Jon ❤️
I could be way off on this, but this is how I viewed the music video. He obviously is growing up throughout the short, but during each phase a new "monster" threatens to stifle his creativity. First there is lust/fame, then greed, then fear/self-doubt. Near the end he feels that there's no way to avoid these "monsters" and that he's trapped. However during the "lay with me, conversate with me" portion of the song he realizes that he's not the only one who wants him to continue blossoming as an artist, his family, friends, and fans are all there with their own separate candle, hanging out with him, talking to him, letting him know what he means to them, and that none of them will let his soul drown in Luxury. This is just my personal take on the song though. Absolutely loved the video and look forward to seeing his progression from here.
Thanks for this, I knew the first monster made sense but the second and 3rd I was confused as to what they represented but this made it very well clear.
I would also add that in the beginning when he step out of the door, the red light represents his ambitions and expectations of the music world and how it became a new passion in his life, and then when he steps out into darkness he is uncertain of his future and how to navigate his future career. He feels like he's alone and trying to succeed in music on his own without any guiding light except his own. And then near the end, the lights represent his fans and supporters who provide him with a sense of certainty and purpose which, in turn, lights up the uncertainty surrounding him.

He's running from the demons that come with living in luxury. This song is a cry for help, Jon is running from the devil but the devil is chasing him for his talents. They constantly throw themselves at him but also have detrimental motives. 2. The Green Goblin: Representation of Jealousy. "Beware my lord of jealousy, for tis the green eyed monster that doth mock the meat it feeds on." (Othello, Shakespeare). "Money the jealous type I always knew it" 3. The spider could represent a general evil that is sneaky like a spider and can trap you in its web, then consume you. Stating that if Jon falls of track and is consumed by the luxuries then we as fans will be his Adderall in helping him get focused and back on track. The basketball reference relates to his playing basketball with the fans which I believe he does from time to time. The outro has given me chill for the whole year I've known it, I haven't heard an artist with this much compassion for music and I don't think I'll ever find another one.
I know there is a real basis of the song but I think one angle of it is, ignoring the music and just focusing on the video is that, maybe the candle's flame is sanity and all the monsters are problems in life and his main goal is to keep the flame, therefore, keeping his sanity. Just a thought on the song.
Mr. Pineapples I feel like this is a really good analysis!! The only problem that I have with it is that I think that instead of the flame being his sanity, I think it’s his passion for music and creating. He’s trying to keep his passion, his “flame” if you will, but all of these distractions and complications come up as he progresses through his life/ career. I think that each of the “monsters” is symbolic of a problem that he’s faced in his career that took a toll on his desire to create
@@leoouellette88 I would tend to say that you and Mr. pineapples are BOTH right - both make sense. As a side note, this is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time :-)
It reminds me of trying to escape depression and anxiety. Running from it your whole life, all alone and then, feeling cold and numb just to finally realize... you’re not alone
What the visuals of the song are demonstrating is Jon Bellions constant struggle to maintain his spiritual focus before he gets lost in the luxuries of the world, the candle represents his spiritual side as he fights to keep it lit keeping it away from the demons, but most importantly he must keep the candle lit (focusing on spiritually) in order to see the demons in the first place. It’s a constant battle my friends, God Bless all of you 🙏🏻❤️
It reminds me of trying to escape depression and anxiety. Running from it your whole life, all alone. Trying to keep your candle lit and not give in. feeling cold and numb for so long, then to finally realize... you’re not alone
I can not express how much I love this song. It shows how famous people can rude and cruel and get caught up in their job. Jon Bellion deserves all the awards for music. I get literal goose bumps when I listen to this. If you haven't got awards for this Mr. Bellion, then let me tell you, you are a great inspiration to me.

this video made me cry. the animation is flawless and the message in the video is so intense and powerful. ive watched it many times over the years but it makes more sense to me now than it ever has.
The animation is not the best, the song is good though. Times you can see the animation faltering is when a character goes from one animation streight to another, without really doing anything. This is shown in the start when the kids trips over something but then immediately stands up to the door.
Could you lay with me Underneath the stars, just conversate with me? My plane is boarding soon and it's so plain to see That one could lose his way So could you pray with me? As someone who isn’t religious at all this song still makes me super emotional listening to it and it’s been years since I’ve listened to it for the first time
Words cannot describe how much I love this song oh my word Jon is amazing. That trumpet line is so iconic and that mixed with the drums is ahhhhh perfect.
This song perfectly demonstrates a Christian’s struggle with sin. The lamp/candle being our faith; the light we give off that not only provides hope bur gives the enemy a target to aim at. As we are chased by our sins, sometimes we drop the candle, sometimes it seems like we’re trapped. But as the Bible says “You will not be tempted beyond what you can bear”, and with faith, strength, and hope, we grow into stronger individuals founded in Christ. As the music video starts, we are weak, ill-equipped to deal with our sinful nature and the threatening existence that permeates life. But as we grow older, we grow surer. Our legs are used to running, our faith is strong, we struggle a little less in leaning on God, and in the end we find ourselves surrounded by those whose candles also did not die out. I watch this video to remind myself that sins are visible and my mission is much clearer than sometimes it seems. Keep the faith, stay strong, don’t lose hope, and have confidence that God will deliver you in the face of any and all opposition. Thank you Jon, this is my favorite song and favorite music video. It has impacted me and strengthened me at my weakest and when I needed it most. You’re doing God’s work!
It reminds me of trying to escape depression and anxiety. Running from it your whole life, all alone. Trying to keep your candle lit and not give in. feeling cold and numb for so long, then to finally realize... you’re not alone
I feel like this is song is a little kid growing up. But over the years he has problems, demons that follow him throughout his life. He runs from hims demons some bigger some smaller. Some from the beginning and some from the end. so he doesn't have to confront them. But in the end he confronts them all. And he ends up realizing he's not alone and he feels at peace with himself and others.
+sasuke84612 He said in the behind the scenes that it's about his success. "Don't let my soul drown in Luxury", "Money was the jealous type, I always knew it", "It's so plain to see, that one could lose his way," He's telling the people in his life to not let him become absorbed in the Luxury, and to not change who he is just because he is famous.
Um all you are wrong it's about his success and that he would want his family and friends to"conversate" with him and keep him from changing and becoming a different person
Something I love about JB besides everything that he is, his incredible talent, his brains and genuine personality is the fact that he shared with the world how he makes his music. I can’t appreciate that more ❤. I know he would’ve been as popular as Post Malone if not more because his music is just superb! This video is incredible the musical work he put into it to make it all prefect as usual, and this lady with her angelical voice, the way they worked together, the musicians collaborating, everything about Jon is so special. I wish we saw more of his great fun talent! ❤
The thing I love most about Jon's music is that I can carry different songs through different parts of my life. Stupid deep was exactly what I needed to hear for years and now I've been carrying luxury with me for this past year. "Please don't let my soul drown in luxury" I don't think luxury has to be associated with money; for me its anything that pulls me away from real connection in my life. I love the moment in this video where Jon is looking around at all the lights being held up with his. And Audra's voice gives me chills every time.
Hey Jon! I remember meeting you way back at fivetowns. It's so good to see you succeed, like we all knew you would. I always loved that cover you did of Maroon 5, my niece and I loved to listen to it. You were so kind to offer to send it to me and I refused out of politeness. I regret it so much now! Keep doing you and may you continue being blessed. I love your music!
Purple Urge same, it’s verging on 6 years since I heard the first song from him. I started listening to him, and several years later when I wasn’t as consistently listening to it, I get a friend sending me links to this “brand new artist”. This was, is, a great club/ bar song. I had almost reached happiness with a group of friends when they played this during a drinking phase. It was missing coca, and better life decisions. It often feels like i made the wrong choices. Like this whole life was a misteak.
This is my favorite song. Not in Jon bellions, this is my most favorite song ever. Its beautifully written as well as the lyrics and beat. Job Bellion is one of the only song artist that can make most of his songs catchy at the same time upbeat and just plain beautiful. Most people can only make 1-3 good songs like this in an album. However Jon here manages to make almost every single one of his songs good. Only a few others can be gifted this talent (Twenty-One Pilots, Lukas graham, etc...).
I'm not even into pop or anything like that, but Jon Bellion is different. He makes his songs meaningful, beautiful, unique. He is a man who writes about emotions and not just love songs. He can create the perfect melodies and combinations of instruments. I really think this person deserves more recognition. He combines different genres at times, which is what a like about an artist
I think it's a lot of religious imagery. He's running from his demons and as he gets older and more successful there are more and more of them (greed and all that bad stuff that comes with fame). But through it all he's carrying the light which is a symbol for God and in the end he's on stage carrying the light of God and faith in general and everyone else (his audience) is too and he's so amazed and feeling so blessed. It's really beautiful!
i remember looking out the window in the night time while in the car driving back to home from a trip and just having my headphones in and just loseing myself in the sky, its like when you listen to this you just think of ur future. i was seven at the time and i lost this song for 4 years and now i have found it. lovely.
jon has a dream to becoming famous but fame comes with corruption aka dont let my soul drown in luxury, and the demons are the ones that want to corrupt him and as he grows the number of demons grow all of them surrounding him but that light is what humbles him or its his faith in god that keeps him from drowning ( i copied and pasted this but the meaning is so absolutely beautiful. i aspire to be everything Jon is.)
i’m here after 4 years and remembering the first time i listened to this when i was 9, bring back all the memories of me and my mates playing destiny on the ps4. Theses songs where a big part of my life
I never feel so much tranquility in a song as when I start this one with the end in mind. I forget all things when Jon lays down his lyrics. When the end surprises me because I'm doing something else, I stop. When I hear that first "pray with me, lay with me," I'm just entranced. I love feeling the weight of the ending lyrics. Thanks Jon, I too get emotional when the chorus drops, but I melt at the message.

Kings Must Rise Bird man! ✨😱
im pretty sure its supposed to be PLAIN to SEE
his music is different and should be more widely known
Maybe the candle is his Faith, or his innocence.
Mr. Pineapples at first I forgot sanity meant sanity and I thought it meant sanitary........

Successful people don't become that way overnight. What most people see at a glance-wealth, a great career, purpose-is the result of hard work and hustle over time.

I'm literally obsessed 😍
this video made me cry. the animation is flawless and the message in the video is so intense and powerful. ive watched it many times over the years but it makes more sense to me now than it ever has.
The animation is not the best, the song is good though. Times you can see the animation faltering is when a character goes from one animation streight to another, without really doing anything. This is shown in the start when the kids trips over something but then immediately stands up to the door.
Is it just me or when in any awesome song, (Not just this one) when the chorus drops you HONESTLY get emotional because its so good?

Could you lay with me
Underneath the stars, just conversate with me?
My plane is boarding soon and it's so plain to see
That one could lose his way
So could you pray with me?
That I don't lose my soul in the luxury
[Bridge: Jon Bellion]
Money the jealous type, I always knew it
I knew she'd come around if I only sweat the music
But I'm starting to believe that it's a problem to my health
Cause the size of half these checks
Could make me vomit on myself
But I give it up to heaven cause it isn't Jon
The chorus an instrumental, oh you think it's odd?

[Verse 2: Jon Bellion]
We're not sad at all
We know you have to leave and we're not mad at all
You'll be back in town and we'll play basketball
And if you fall off track, we'll be your Adderall
We won't let your soul drown in luxury
[Bridge: Jon Bellion]
Money the jealous type, I always knew it
I knew she'd come around if I only sweat the music

It's about his depression in 8th grade then him dropping out at 19 then him being successful at 22
+sasuke84612 He said in the behind the scenes that it's about his success. "Don't let my soul drown in Luxury", "Money was the jealous type, I always knew it", "It's so plain to see, that one could lose his way," He's telling the people in his life to not let him become absorbed in the Luxury, and to not change who he is just because he is famous.
smart and clever thinking
Um all you are wrong it's about his success and that he would want his family and friends to"conversate" with him and keep him from changing and becoming a different person
+RubADubTub that's why we said that it's what we feel like it's about. Not what it is about, calm yourself.
"Please don't let my soul drown in luxury"
I don't think luxury has to be associated with money; for me its anything that pulls me away from real connection in my life. I love the moment in this video where Jon is looking around at all the lights being held up with his. And Audra's voice gives me chills every time.

This was, is, a great club/ bar song. I had almost reached happiness with a group of friends when they played this during a drinking phase. It was missing coca, and better life decisions. It often feels like i made the wrong choices. Like this whole life was a misteak.
im in love with the lyrics of this. a little deep if you really listen to it
This is my favorite song.
My 20; year old son has seen twenty one pilots 3 times. He showed me this guy ....I love it. Real shit. Jon Bellion you rock❤️

It's really beautiful!
its really beautiful it tears me up every time in the last part with the lady

jon has a dream to becoming famous but fame comes with corruption aka dont let my soul drown in luxury, and the demons are the ones that want to corrupt him and as he grows the number of demons grow all of them surrounding him but that light is what humbles him or its his faith in god that keeps him from drowning
( i copied and pasted this but the meaning is so absolutely beautiful. i aspire to be everything Jon is.)
