So it's officially happening. I'm joining the Air National Guard. All my paperworks has been completed and physical is good to go. I'll be swearing in at the end of the week
Right on, Erik! I survived BMT and tech school, earlier this year, at 36, my 37th birthday was earlier this month; you'll be fine. NDI, that's super neat, I'm highly considering taking that course at my local tech college, I took the composites course last year, a lady in the NDI course got a job with Space X, right after completing her education! I've been on orders since mid July, for now they last until the end of September. Nice choice with the Guard, my dad retired from the Guard late last year. My son is near you, at Marine Corps boot camp, in San Diego, I'll be there in late October to see him graduate and bring him home for ten days, planning on a few Disney days prior to his graduation. I'm taking advantage of tuition assistance, I start working on my Bachelors in International Relations early next month, my class isn't costing me a cent, I'm going through American Military University.
Hey Lilly! Thats awesome! Yeah, it's an awesome benefit! Sounds like you guys are going to have a cool trip. What was BMT and tech school like? I'm slightly nervous haha
Great to hear, I'm prior Army but that was 15 years ago. I'm 36 now, 37 in Jan, and I am currently speaking with an AF recruiter. Now I dont feel so crazy! Thank you for sharing!👍
I am glad to find your channel. My spouse joined at 36 and left to BMT at 37. I have been looking for content exactly like yours. Older and ANG. Nice job. Thanks for documenting this.
Thank you! How are you hanging in? How long is his tech school for? He'll do awesome. Definitely the hardest part about all of this is the time away from family. Let me know how its going.
I’m 36 joining the Washington ANG. Went through MEPS 3/23/20 passed everything but got a 43 on the ASVAB. Didn’t want to settle on a job or that score so I studied hard using ASVAB for dummies book and some ASVAB apps, went to MEPS again on 5/5, retested on ASVAB and got a 63!! But they said my score was too high from the first time so I had to retest AGAIN on the spot and after my 3rd ASVAB, I got a 60. I was able to keep the 63!! I’m swearing in on Friday 5/22 for Cyber Transport Systems 3D1X2!
Hell yeah! Congrats Ryan! Nice work. So now it's on to Student Flight? Congrats again!
Erik - I appreciate it! I’m really excited for this. Yeah student flight and then hopefully off to BMT in Lackland at some point. But this COVID19 has changed so much in the process. May end up doing BMT & Tech school at Keesler AFB 🤷🏻 we’ll see..
Aloha Erik! I will be turning 39 in about a month, I just swore in this past Sunday, and will also be the "grandpa" when I head to tech school next year. Right on!!!
Hey thanks great! Congrats! Did you active or guard/reserve? Which job did you book?
@@erikminamihata 1C7X1, Airfield Management in the Hawaii Air National Guard
awesome! I actually spoke with a recruiter from HANG. Would have been too much of a commute though. We'll probably work together on a TDY though!
@@erikminamihata im looking forward to it, lets keep in touch sir!
Me too bruh. Ship out next winter.
Thanks for this Video I really need to see this! Same situation, I have a great career now, with a wife and kids oh and I am 34 approaching 35 in a few months. Currently overweight 5’9 228lbs started this journey weighting 247lbs. Recruiter told me to come back at 201lbs as I played football and will do a measurement.
Thanks Chris! You got this! I have a buddy who went through BMT 2 times. He made it through the second time around but yeah, he had to cut a substantial amount of weight. You totally got this. It's definitely worth the hard work.
Glad i found your videos because they had become very helpful thank you. Im 40yrs old with a mechanical engineer degree always wanted to serve but i was having too much fun. I'm really planning on joining the air national guard full time but I'm kind of afraid not of the physical part but mostly the mental part.
I swore in a few months ago down in Portland, Or at 28! I've really enjoyed following your story, it's great to see other older guys join up! Hoping to land one of those sweet ARG gigs :)
Oh nice!! Congrats!
So glad this is out there! I’m 33 about to join! Thanks for this! It’s not over until your dead if you want something go out there and get it!
Absolutely bro! How's the process going? Keep me updated!
My journey has been very similar to yours. I started my process with Air Force Reserves and Lasik surgery ultimately dis qualified me. So moved on to Air National Guard in Tennessee, and now I'm literally one month away from my 40th birthday I just got the green light trying to drop about 5 lb of muscle to get into maps how ridiculous is that excited though
awesome!! congrats!!
I'm seriously considering joining the Utah Air National Guard at 35. Thank you for your content. Should help me with knowing what to prepare for.
Awesome! Yea, glad these videos help! Definitely look into it
I'm prior military but it was 15 years ago, been raising my kids since but they are older now and I'm ready again @ 36 (37 in a month), and am speaking with a recruiter. I'm so nervous. I wanted to find content like this for encouragement, thank you!
Hey Iris! Thank you for your service. That's great! Its definitely natural to feel nervous when talking with a recruiter. I still get nervous when I walk into a recruiters' office! Definitely don't worry about your age too much. It all pretty much goes right out the door once you're in. Let me know how things are going.
@@erikminamihata thanks, I will!
Hey dude thank you for all your videos because it inspire me a lot. I'm 35 years old and i want to join the air force.
Hey Armando, for sure! Glad they help Bro. That's awesome! Where are you at in the process? Have you thought about any of the jobs yet?
You got some good genes ! I’m 23 hoping that I still look young asf like you at almost 40.
Just don't get married until your late 30s! That should help a lot haha
This is dope bro congrats. I'm 29 turning 30 and I want to join the air force myself. I have a family and I wanted to see more info about older guys joining the military so seeing this video just motivated me to keep pushing forward. Best of luck to you bro.
Hey that's Xavier. You'll do awesome! Keep me updated on your progress!
36 here, took ASVAB and MEPS, waiting for age waiver, recruiter said next step is OCS, I am excited for the opportunity!
Im 36. In puerto rico. Just took the asvab. Did great. Now going to meps. My main worry is that they consider me under weight. Trying to work out, put muscle and EAT! Love reading/seeing about older recruits and women experiences.
Right on congrats!!!! You'll do awesome. Keep me updated on what happens next!
Hey Erik,
Good to see you are staying motivated. Being in a MX career field (whichever AFSC), there’s a camaraderie that only we understand even with other Military branches foreign and domestic.
Definitely take advantage of the SCRA benefit. It drops interest rates on loans/credit cards and maybe even your spouse’s while you’re on orders, it also protects you from a lot of other things.
If you have any kinds of questions, feel free to ask. This goes out to anyone also.
Keep up the great attitude. Thanks for wanting to serve.
Ralph
Ralph, thanks for the comment! I actually had no idea there that there was a benefit. Thanks for sharing! How are things going with you? Sounds like the AF really helped with your career? Thank you for your service!
Erik, definitely make sure you get a copy of your orders before you head to BMT. You’ll actually send that document to all the Credit Card/Loan/Mortgage companies.
My Active Duty/Reserve time did help my career. I actually work for the Department of Navy as a civilian dealing with munitions and related equipment/Logistics. It’s an interesting dynamic being affiliated with both branches but helps in certain situations.
I just got my approved retirement papers from the AF Reserves. I’m retiring because I want my troop to have a chance of wearing the rank I have currently. I’m not one to block people’s progress. I’ve reached as far as I could with the Air Force in total also the traveling with both careers takes a toll with my family.
I keep thinking about doing vlogs about my travels/situations to help people’s curiosity for both my Military and Civilian careers but too scared I guess.
Hope all is well with you and I wish you the best. Looking forward to seeing you as an Airman. By the way, Air Force is going to authorize OCPs during your time. Keep us posted. Take care!
Right on Ralph. Yeah, I'd be awesome to see you post some stuff up. I was searching high and low for information on careers with the government after the military. A lot of my friends have great jobs specifically because they're prior service history. It would definitely be good to hear from your experiences.
Thanks for all the info I really do appreciate it! Mahalo!
Morning Erik! Great video, I got excited and motivated to see you joined the A.N.G. at 39 yr old. I'm myself 33, and I'm thinking of joining reserved. One of the reasons is I'm a CDL a operator and I would like to sort do some similar in the branch so yeah man I'm really excited to follow through with your videos see how things turn out for you. Wishing you all the best✌😎
Hey Rudy. Good to meet you Brother. Nice to hear. 33 is a really good age. If I could go back and do it all over again, I would have went in around 30~33. Keep me updated on your progress!! Let me know if you need any help.
Wisp Rudy....any update?
I'm in the same boat as you man. 38 now and shipping to lackland at 39. Gonna be a crazy experience.
Hey Awesome! You'll do great. Congrats on getting past the hardest part! Keep me updated!
@@erikminamihata You got it man.
Crazy how many people are joining late, I just took the ASVAB at 39…can’t wait!
Congrats Erik. I’m turning 38 the end of this month. I almost enlisted in the Army when I was 18 but backed out. I too thought I was past the age limit of 35. I have a new found sense of responsibility to serve in military after this past week watching & reading about John McCain’s service. I’m married with two kids in grade school though. I was looking at the Navy but found your videos. Now I’m thinking of looking into a similar path your on except maybe up here in Washington state. You said you didn’t have to move is that right? Stationed close to where you live.
Thank you! Right on, yeah his career and service is definitely inspiring. I would talk to one of the local Air National Guard recruiters to see what they would have to say as well. There are a few units up there. You'll definitely won't have to move. Just know that you will spend some time away from home. But the good thing is your family won't have to move around. But yeah, definitely look to see what they have to say. Let me know how it goes!
You just inspired me sir. Thanks a lot .
Hey thanks! I'm literally one of many that join at this age. Are you going for it too?
still rooting for you bro, you got this
Thanks, Brother. I appreciate the support! I was actually feeling a little nervous. This comment helped. Thank you. Hope all is well
You got in with your tattoos? I got disqualified by above the collar on the back of my neck and also sleeves.
Hey man this is great! I’ve been debating about branch! Ross definitely helps
Glad it was helpful! I love being an Airman. You will too! Let me know which route you take.
I’m wanting to join sounds great I love serving ❤thx I’m 39
this is an awesome vid! I'm 37 and considering....
Thanks Chris. Go for it!!
I read that you need to ship by your 39th birthday. Is this true?
Hey Jason, when I went through I had to have been sworn in by my 39th birthday. After that it's all good. It may have changed but that's how it was for me a couple of years ago. Let me know what happens!
Bro your my inspiration, I definitely have to passed this asvab in August and join the army before Im 32 in September!
Coiwill 86 you got this! I’ll make a study video this week for you.
Great man truly appreciated it man thanks
👍
This is super insightful. In FL and debating enlisting in NG or AG for school and housing purposes. Howsb8t been for you? Also gotta school me where you got the irezumi on you arms at
Right on! It's been great. No regrets on my end. I do kind of of wish I started younger and kicked off my career Active duty first but all good. I got my tattoos from Jiro Yaguchi at Onizuka Tattoo in Los Angeles. Keep me updated on your progress!
Thats amazing. I actually found out about Onizuka not long ago when I looked up what places in the US actually utilize tebori. Would consider flying out there for that experience. I definitely wish I'd considered it while younger. Is it possible to have a full time job and still sign up and do AG? I know some companies such as the one I'm at now support military leave which I'm sure would cover drill weekends and BMT but I was wondering if AG would allow that. Big, big thanks for the response!
Hi Erik, I am 38 years old, could you give me the information about of recruiter's name and phone number. I have a few questions. The local recruiter is not answering me back. I'm in northern California. Thank you so much!! Good luck!
Sandra Fallas for sure! Can you email me at irezumierik@gmail.com? I’ll send over his contact info for you. Let me know how it goes!
I'm headed to a recruiter in October. I'm 39 and I tried to join at 38 but had to lose weight first so I went from 185 to 152 for now . Still need 3 more pounds almost there. Well worth it. Thanks for the vedio its motivated me to keep going.
What’s goin on bro. I’m 29 and in the process of joining the ANG unit here in ATL. I’m scheduled for MEPS on the 28th of this month. Any tips?
Hey Bro! Awesome! Best advice I could give you man is just ride the ride. Try to keep a good sense of humor while going through MEPS too. Take a lot of what's happening in the beginning in as a positive learning experience. Network a ton and make a lot of great connections. But yeah, just try to enjoy the experience for what it is. You'll do great! Let me know how it goes.
Hey Erik after you get sweared in how long till you go to basic training? Did you ever get that info for me?
Hey Bro, average time is about 5~6 months. I'm crossing my fingers it happens way sooner haha. I actually asked him yesterday, he said they are available depending in the situation. You may want to contact him on that one. I'ma have him on the channel sometime next week. If you want you can email me the specifics and I can ask him. irezumierik@gmail.com. Thanks bro!
Thank so much for all your help and knowledge Erik I appreciate so much. I know you’ll kick ass at Basic Training and I’ll email you asap
How is everything going. Im 39 and thinking of joining?
Hey Gabe! It's going great! It's been a crazy adventure! You'll dig it. Have you looked into and of the AFSCs yet?
I recently got accepted into nursing school and I have two children, will the ANG grant me the opportunity to attend nursing school? My goal is to be a flight nurse. Thank you! And awesome content!!
Awesome! Congrats! I'm not familiar with the Med side but I would definitely give them a call. Sorry I wasn't much help on this. But yeah, congrats on nursing school! Let me know what they say!
His video is a bit dated but I’m definitely getting back in.. prior service in school.. going that officer route
Hi,
It seems you were going to join the AF active duty a year ago but now your in the air national guard. What changed your mind?
Hi Julie! I wanted to take a shot at active duty 01 but it didn't work out. I ended up having a really good connection with the local ANG recruiters in my area and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse! That 01 slot is still possible with them. Are you trying to decide between active or reserve? How far are you in the process? Talk soon!
I sworn in last month and I chose NDI how has your experience been? Im super nervous
Awesome! Congrats! NDI is a great job. You'll dig it. Best job in maintenance. You made a good choice. Did you get a ship date or anything yet? Active or reserve?
What’s your day job? Cool vids!
E GD thanks! I’m a data analyst for an automotive research site. Thanks again for checking out the vids! I do appreciate it
So you can't join after 39? I suppose at this point military in general is no longer an option.
How old are you now, Steven? What's your background? In some states the National Guard will take you till 41. It just depends. If you're older than that you'll have to see if your state has a State Military Reserve. They work side-by-side with the National Guard. LMK. Talk soon.
@@erikminamihata thanks man. 38 now. Have my ba in sports marketing and business administration.
@@sshumkaer you still have time I think. Get to a recruiter. I swore in after my 39th birthday but you definitely have to be sworn in while you’re 39. I believe you’ll need to be 39 when you ship to BMT (not 100% on this part)
How fast did the process take you to get into the reserves
I would say about 6 months from Meps to Basic. Went by really fast!
Congrats dude, I’m 36yr old. U had motivated me to join, l live in South Bay, can u give me the recruiters information
Hey Kim! Hey that's awesome! Here's his email jeremy.newsome.1@us.af.mil . Tell him Erik sent you! Let me know how it goes! GL!!
Hi Erick, i tried that email but for some reason its says server not found? Just curious if you have is direct contact number thanks.
Welcome to NDI!
I'm 20 years old, Active Duty, currently working over in Moody as an Inspector. Tell me how things go! I know a lot and I can answer any questions you might have.
Thank you!! Do you mind sending me your personal email. ?I'm at irezumierik@gmail.com? I have a ton of questions hahah. Thanks again! I really do appreciate it.
I sworn in last month as NDI im so excited what was your experience with NDI?
I will be 32 when leaving for BMT for the AF reserve.
Awesome! You'll do great at 32. The hardest part really is being away from home. Everything else is something you just have to go through. Keep me updated!
@@erikminamihata I will for sure! I am apart of the Facebook group, so we can connect there.
Im 29 but I can't seem to pass the asvab 😭😭buy i really want to join the guard.
Jerel Lee Alcantara - how’s everything going for you? I’d definitely recommend the ASVAB for Dummies book (I borrowed one from my local library for free multiple times the past year before I tested) and the free ASVAB apps on iOS or Android.
If you put in the time to study even one hour per day it really pays off. When I was going through the book I realized I completely forgot everything I learned in high school 20 years ago and the book helped tremendously. Especially in math, general science, electronics and even word knowledge.
You got this!! Study up and retest!
Just curious why you went guard vs reserve?
Hey Jon, well two things. There are a lot of great paying opportunities for full time ARG Active Guard Reserve positions that pop up in our state. I've been on usajobs.gov following them for a while and everything looked pretty good. The other is I really dig the state mission. I'd really love the opportunity to help our community out. Seemed like a win win hah. How are things going for you?
Erik oh that's cool. I haven't even spoke with a recruiter to be honest. I'm currently in a doctorate program. I'm going to school to be a Chiropractor. I also have 3 kids. Anyway I still in the back of my mind want to serve so I've been doing research.
Oh nice! That's awesome. You'll have an awesome career lined up for the family. But yeah, I would definitely look into the guard units around you. When you do talk to a recruiter see if they'll take you to visit them too.
Hey bro. Congrats! I passed meps last December, then I started the background check (as greencard holder), but it expired. I kind had a step back on USAF because of a plan of getting in to nursing school first, and with all the delays and second guessing whether I go to school first or join USAF first?. but the program is still next year. Im planning now to complete my BI and joining at 36. Did you go in as officer? Good to hear from you again bro. Your Active? How does Air National Guard work for active?
Hey thanks! Honestly, if I could do everything all over again, I would have went the ROTC route. You'll get the benefit of getting your degree paid for and when you're done you'd have you commission. Definitely look into that if you can. I'm going enlisted. My timeline basically dried up. I'm good with that, I just wish I worked on this sooner haha. I was a state reservists so it was an easy transition. But yeah, see if you can find an ROTC program. Might work out well.
So you may it great! when you ship out?
Coiwill 86 recruiter said hopefully within 5 months. Crossing my fingers on that one ha
Nice man, that's great, hope everything goes well.
whats your job?
Why not active?
Didn't want to move my wife away from her family. Guard worked out best for the both of us
o yayyy
Wtf you do not look 39 😩
HA! It's catching up to me now! lol
