Alex explaining the lyrics to Andy at the end was priceless! Also, yeah that is some grade A “deep in the sauce” to block out the lyrics to this one. They add so much to the sauce, though. Let this be a lesson, Young Andrew.
Andy really cracked me up when he finally got the story.😂😂😂 It's what makes this song so great. The lyrics and vocals of the music paints a great picture of a real life situation that some have actually found themselves in. You hear it and feel it, and can imagine yourself being there seeing it unfold.
I also enjoyed that part of video immensely. In Andy's defense, I often listen to new songs in the same way, i.e., I don't always pay attention to the lyrics first, but intake the vocals as part of the entire sound design. After that, I start to appreciate the lyrics, drum fills, guitar riffs and other components that make a song memorable.
According to Skynyrd: "This song is based on a true story. As Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington tells it, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, who was about 18 at the time, used a fake ID to get in a bar while his younger bandmates Rossington and Allen Collins waited for him in a truck. Van Zant danced with a girl named Linda, whose boyfriend, who was not too happy about it, came up to Ronnie and reached for something in his boot. Figuring he was going for a gun, Van Zant told him: "If you're going to shoot me it's going to be in the ass or the elbows... just gimme a few steps and I'll be gone." He ran to the truck, and he, Rossington, and Collins wrote this song that night."

Great song, but you’ve got to hear “Call Me The Breeze” which is one of their greatest hits and written by the infamous JJ Cale, which has a great solo by Gary Rossington and an unforgettable piano sole by the late Billy Powell! On another note you mentioned similarities of Joe Walsh, which I highly recommend a mid-80’s song he wrote (while dating Stevie Nicks) called “The Confessor”! An incredible song full of meaning in a time of a transition in his life and includes a powerful guitar solo which seems to release some anger he has built up inside (my two cents). The opening solo of "I Know a Little" was the first Skynyrd riff I learned when I got serious about playing guitar - it's a real bitch to master, but it's so damn fun to play once you do.
This song always makes me laugh a little. Besides being a good little ditty, theres some truth behind it. Guitarist Gary Rossington wrote the lyrics about being in a bar in Jacksonville. Ronnie was caught dancing with another man's woman, and had a gun pointed at him. Classic Skynyrd story. Classic Ronnie.🤤
yep, Gary Rossington and Allen Collins were waiting in the car, Ronnie came running out, and they tore out of there. He had been in a number of bar fights and was even shot in the chest once
Good one...they really hit their Southern roots with that one . When he talks about gathering pop bottles it takes me back to 3rd grade ( 1966 ) pulling a red western flyer wagon with my 4 year old brother and when we got it full we'd cash them in at the corner grocery store and buy penny candy . That was pure heaven back then . PK
"Call me the Breeze" is the next song you Boys gotta hit. It's a fun song too and has a ripping guitar solo just the way Andy likes it. Top 10 guitar solo in a song ever actually. But Hats off to your Subscribers for choosing "Gimme Three Steps." "SHOW ME THE BACK DOOR!" 😂 Cheers from the Past!
My vote is "I Know A Little" Hard to guess what they will play unless they wanna do the obvious and research their more popular songs. Edit: I'm going to amend the title. This is the Best LYNYRD SKYNRD Song Ever! (From what we've heard so far)
I think _Tuesday's Gone_ and _Simple Man_ are close. _Tuesday's Gone_ is probably the better composition, but it's wistful in a way that feels like it dilutes its emotional impact. _Simple Man_ is pretty consistent in how it mixes a little darkness, maybe even a little dread, into its wisdom. Given the choice between the two for a desert island disk, I think I'd pick _Simple Man_ .
"I Ain't The One" is one favorite of mine that rarely gets mentioned for some reason. Also "Call me the Breeze," "Poison Whiskey," "That Smell," "Simple Man," "Tuesday's Gone," "Ballad of Curtis Lowe," "Saturday Night Special," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Things Goin' On"... Can't really think of a bad Skynyrd song (pre-crash, that is), and no way I could pick one favorite. I had never really considered Freebird "the best Lynyrd Skynyrd song ever" as some do, though it's a great song with one of the greatest solos ever (same goes for Stairway to Heaven).
Old story I heard 'back then'... the band supposedly got its name from a *A* hole shop teacher at some of the band members' high school- his name was... Leonard Skinner!!
"Call me the Breeze" is a lot better. They did not write it. JJ Cale did. But the LS take is the definitive version. "You got that right" is another good banger.
What I love about the lyrics to this song is that EVERY other song, particularly southern rock or country, is about how much of a badass I am. "Don't mess with me. I'll kick your ass. etc.".... This song is the opposite. Screw that... "Just give me 3 steps towards the door and I'm out" lol
These guys are the best. You can’t help but smile, sing along and air guitar. Such a FUN song that rocks. Can you tell they are one of my fave’s. Hahaha!
I never dreamed....on STreet survivors. The best underrated skynyrd song. The guitar solo at end by S. Gaines is so biting and haunting. Three days after album dropped....their plane went down.
They have so many great songs. "Cry for the Bad Man" and "I Need You" are my two favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd tracks both extremely underrated and both are bangers from beginning to end. Each have a different feel but, undeniably amazing classics.
It's so interesting watching people react to a song I've heard thousands of times since it was released. Nothing like a reaction to a song I grew up with to make me feel old.
Fun stuff. I had to play this every night back in 80's when I was still in a band playing bars. Like anything, it gets old. When I want a Skynyrd fix, I always go deep for songs that haven't been beaten to death. I Need You and Needle and the Spoon and On the Hunt are a good starting point.
So I am glad you all went back to Skynyrd. What you experienced was the difference in the band after Steve Gaines joined. They all said they were getting stagnant and needed something new. Along came Steve Gaines. If you want to enjoy more of his influence I would suggest 'You got that Right' where Ronny and Steve share vocals or 'I know a Little' which Ronnie and Steve changed from the original that Steve did with his band Crawdad.
My favorite part is when he says "Excuse me!" Perfect thing to say at a moment like that. Don't know if anyone else suggested it, but a good follow-up might be "Saturday Night Special," since it also involves a gun but is a more serious gun control song from 1974.
Hahahah! Andy, you are hysterical! You missed the whole thing! I suggest you listen to it again and it will become one of your favorites! Thank you for the laugh!
For songs with similar-ish stories check out: Jay and the Americans - "Come a Little Bit Closer" The Charlie Daniels Band - "Uneasy Rider" Tom T Hall - "Salute to a Switchblade" Marty Robbins - "El Paso" Bobby Bare - "The Winner"
One can only imagine the music that was still to come until that sad, sad day in 1977. To all band members who have departed us then and since then, continue to rest in peace.
Just for a good, down and dirty one that I haven't seen suggested, "Gimme Back My Bullets" is a cool, dyed-in-the-wool southern rock banger. I'll also put in my vote for "Tuesday's Gone", probably my favorite LS song, it's definitely their style in a ballad, but somehow, elevated.
Love, love, love this song. Clever take on the being with the wrong girl theme. Another one that rivals it in my mind is one way out by the Allman Brothers Band.
Some suggestions for the next one from these guys would be #1" Saturday night Special", #2" Mr. Breeze", #3 "That Smell" Classic southern rock at its best by one of the best Southern Rock Bands.
How do you call a favorite from this band? They’re all so good. I do like “I Need You” because it’s not one you hear very often and I just love his singing in that one. But really, I’ve never heard a bad Skynyrd song.
"On The Hunt", "The Ballad of Curtis Loew", and their cover of JJ Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" get my votes, though I'd say stick with JJ if you review that tune...In fact, JJ Cale is a "laid back" rabbit hole you need to check out, but do a deeper dive past all the tunes others (such as Clapton) have popularized. I recommend "I Got The Same Old Blues", "If You're Ever In Oklahoma", "Devil In Disguise", "Downtown LA", or "Thirteen Days".
Guys, Skynyrd has a lot of great songs you probably haven't heard yet -- "I Know a Little", "On The Hunt", "Working for MCA", Ballad of Curtis Loew" ... keep going.
I read or saw an interview with members of the band. They said in Jacksonville Fla, Ronnie Van Sant was dancing with some guys girls. The guy reached down to his boot and Ronnie thought he was reaching for a gun, so he told the guy, "if you're going to shoot me, it's going to be in the back or the elbow" ,something along that. He and his other band mates ran out and they wrote the song that night.
If you really want to hear this song you need to do it justice by listening to the live cut on the One More From the Road album. Amazing guitar work. Also Call Me The Breeze and T For Texas are absolute bangers from that double album.
These guys were the real deal. They were drinkin' playin' fightin' men of the south. What they sang about they lived. Those early albums rarely missed, and this is another one that was right on target. If you play guitar, this is great fun to play.
I agree that this is better than free bird, but I like "call me the breeze" even better. It's the only Lynyrd Skynyrd song that isn't s*** kicker music. (Love the piano)
Not even close for me, Simple Man has the best sound and great leads that are not as manic as Free Bird but for 9 out of 10 times when I get an itch for just one of their songs, it is Simple Man. That was the best song when I saw them live, Free Bird is often an exercise in excess, though still a great song.
Andy and Alex- from the comments here I think you have figured out that you have barely dipped your toe in the catalog of great tunes from such a great band. Every song mentioned in these comments is fabulous and worth a look on your channel.
One of my favorite slash most frustrating things to do is to watch Alex’s face as he reacts to lyrics and looks over at Andy for a reaction, and Andy has completely missed it. 😂 I personally think lyrics are a huge piece of what makes a great song great, and can’t imagine not hearing them, but I think it’s a case of engineer brain vs writer brain.
You're spot on. My room mate in college hooked up his cassette player to his analog alarm clock and this was his alarm music every morning. No doubt their best song!
You young boys have THE BEST reaction videos! I’m 60 years old and I picked this song for my 11th grade English class to play for them and tell them about the parts of speech. Thanks for the memories!♥️
Ugh these comments show what cantankerous sticks in the mud a lot of y’all are. RE-LAAAAX we’re talking Skynyrd not whether the Fed is practicing sound fiscal policy🙄
One of my favorite vacations ever (and I've done it 4 times now) is going to Jacksonville and walking in the footsteps of Skynyrd! Best band ever! When they were on, there has never been, or ever will be, a band that kicked so much ass.
Skynyrd is still my favorite band even after all these years. You guys should do the entire One More From the Road album in one pop. Gems like T For Texas and Crossroads that arenn't recorded elsewhere, and live versions of Freebird, Call me the Breeze, Needle and the Spoon are all even better live than in the studio.
They are touring again and will be here in Fresno soon. Can't wait to go. I last saw them when they were first touring in 1972. Wish my friend from the first concert was still alive to see it. I will have a cold one for him.

If you want to enjoy more of his influence I would suggest 'You got that Right' where Ronny and Steve share vocals or 'I know a Little' which Ronnie and Steve changed from the original that Steve did with his band Crawdad.
Ballad of Curtis Loew or Call Me The Breeze needs to be next up…
My favorite part is when he says "Excuse me!" Perfect thing to say at a moment like that. Don't know if anyone else suggested it, but a good follow-up might be "Saturday Night Special," since it also involves a gun but is a more serious gun control song from 1974.
You should hear the live version on the album “one more from the road” Extended lead break and all around band jam.
Hahahah! Andy, you are hysterical! You missed the whole thing! I suggest you listen to it again and it will become one of your favorites! Thank you for the laugh!
For songs with similar-ish stories check out:
Jay and the Americans - "Come a Little Bit Closer"
The Charlie Daniels Band - "Uneasy Rider"
Tom T Hall - "Salute to a Switchblade"
Marty Robbins - "El Paso"
Bobby Bare - "The Winner"
Come a little bit closer...thanks. Couldn't remember the name of that one.
the water fell on the floor is when the guy pissed his pants lol
For me, it gets no better than That Smell. But this song is right up there. Definitely S tier.
One can only imagine the music that was still to come until that sad, sad day in 1977. To all band members who have departed us then and since then, continue to rest in peace.
This song kicks harder than my memory of it. Still, try the Stones "Bitch" from the same poll at some point and see how it compares...
That is a SERIOUS banger! Great horns too!
GOOOOOOOD MORNING A&A FAMILY!!!
☮️💟♾️
If you like this song, you will probably like "Uneasy Rider," a 1970s story song by The Charlie Daniels Band.
Probably Tuesday’s Gone
Great song. Pride of Jacksonville!🔥❤️
Coming home, Give me back my bullets, Needle or the spoon
My favorite is “ You got that right” . I think it captures the soul of this band.
Love, love, love this song. Clever take on the being with the wrong girl theme.
Another one that rivals it in my mind is one way out by the Allman Brothers Band.
Some suggestions for the next one from these guys would be #1" Saturday night Special", #2" Mr. Breeze", #3 "That Smell"
Classic southern rock at its best by one of the best Southern Rock Bands.
Since you mentioned Joe Walsh, I think it's time to hit Joe Walsh again. My vote is for "The Confessor". BTW, another great review, gents.
good call. never gets any play but is a gem
Have you guys listened to the studio version of Free Bird? I know you did the live version, but you need to hear the original version.
Yup Gimme Three Steps, son! 😂
I recommend "I Got The Same Old Blues", "If You're Ever In Oklahoma", "Devil In Disguise", "Downtown LA", or "Thirteen Days".
definitely 'thirteen days'
“City Girls” is my all time favorite from JJ.
@@JKTritt, oooh, that's a good one, too! He really doesn't have a bad song...
Tuesdays Gone is another great one!
Oh so y’all got around to Tuesday’s Gone. Mazel.
You are going to eat that video title when you hear Call Me the Breeze.
Andy - Are you saying you need more cowbell?
Cyndy Lou here. Yes, with 2 Ys... Loved your reaction and Andy not even realizing the lyrics. haha! MY favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song! Thanks!
Guys, Skynyrd has a lot of great songs you probably haven't heard yet -- "I Know a Little", "On The Hunt", "Working for MCA", Ballad of Curtis Loew" ... keep going.
I Know a Little definitely shows off their technical skills on the instruments!
Andy, "I don't need no stinking lyrics!". Ha!
Simple Man is their best in my opinion= or Call Me the Breeze which is their own southern kind of Highway Star
They already did Simple Man.
" Tuesday's Gone"
I read or saw an interview with members of the band. They said in Jacksonville Fla, Ronnie Van Sant was dancing with some guys girls. The guy reached down to his boot and Ronnie thought he was reaching for a gun, so he told the guy, "if you're going to shoot me, it's going to be in the back or the elbow" ,something along that. He and his other band mates ran out and they wrote the song that night.
Pateron Film?
Oscar winning " Summer of Soul "
of course!!!
You guys have to check out CALL ME THE BREEZE. A truely over looked classic. That demonstrates their multiple musical talents.
You dym ryte brothyr!
I agree that this is better than free bird, but I like "call me the breeze" even better. It's the only Lynyrd Skynyrd song that isn't s*** kicker music. (Love the piano)
S**t kicker? Maybe dig a little deeper into their catalog before you say dumb s**t
T For Texas has the guitars "talking" back and forth, with a great piano solo in there too.
I began to pray and the water fell on the floor. One of the best lyrics ever. He pissed his pants.
You are the first poster to explain that line in the whole comment section, most people just think that is a throwaway line.
@@ratroute8238 i dont know how anyone misses it.
So many Skynyrd greats, you have a long way to go, a little premature to label this their best. Try "Was I Right or Wrong" or "On the Hunt"
Ballad of Curtis Leow, Preacher's Daughter, Swamp Music, Gimme back my bullets.
Skynyrd's treasure trove is DEEP
It was fun watching you (Alex) explain to him (Andy) what the song lyrics were about.
Call me the Breeze, also check out Swamp Music
Gotta check out “you got that right” the only song Ronnie shared lead vocals with
Sorry fellas but it's not even close...Simple Man. Checkmate, game over, end 'O' frggin story.
Yep. I knew it! What a total underrated classic, down home grooves and a great story told well. And this song is S tier, all the way.
Give me three steps
Yup.
My very favorite song by them and maybe all time!! Brings back memories of good time dancing at the Rec center and just being young
Saturday night special.... way better than freebird imo
You young boys have THE BEST reaction videos! I’m 60 years old and I picked this song for my 11th grade English class to play for them and tell them about the parts of speech. Thanks for the memories!♥️
Nah, Tuesdays Gone and Simple Man are the best tracks.
Loved those guys. I'm forever grateful that I got to see them in their prime playing live.
Ugh these comments show what cantankerous sticks in the mud a lot of y’all are.
RE-LAAAAX we’re talking Skynyrd not whether the Fed is practicing sound fiscal policy🙄
Nobody is a fan of the Fed. :)
One of my favorite vacations ever (and I've done it 4 times now) is going to Jacksonville and walking in the footsteps of Skynyrd! Best band ever! When they were on, there has never been, or ever will be, a band that kicked so much ass.
Best Skynrd song?
This is a typical Skynrd song.
They have dozens easily as good .
Fun fun song. Just a cool radio tune. Call Me the Breeze, Saturday Night Special, and anything suggested. Thanks guys, this one was fun.
