I've watched that movie so many times and it still makes my heart beat fast. Agree with you. One of the best movies ever. And one of the best soundtracks.

      Waving back!!!
Story. Back in the day, I was looking for an agent for a screenplay. It got a fair amount of attention and I had 7 offers of representation. One of the agents I turned down, turned into one of my best friends. Turned out that he had always wanted to write a screenplay himself about the surrender at Appomattox after he had seen the movie Gettysburg, so asked me to find the movie and make a copy for him. So I did, and sat down to watch Gettysburg while it copied. My mouth dropped open in astonishment at the incredible beauty and, when it ended, I went back to the beginning and immediately watched it again. Sad to say, though I tried very hard to help him, I never found the right structure to suggest to him of a parallel for the end of the war.
I have done passionate research into the Civil War because my 2nd great uncle captured the first Confederate cannon of the war and my great grandfather was brought to DC by Stanton to lead the investigation into Lincoln's assassination. During the trial, he was one of the special judge advocates and afterwards put the records together for the Library of Congress.
One of the best things that came out of watching Gettysburg was my obsession with Col Joshua Chamberlain. Went to visit his grave in Maine and the house where he lived. Have read all of his books and his writing sends chills down your back.
Waving and thanks for reminding me of this wonderful movie. Mary

One of my fascinations with this movie is its connection to my great grandfather. General Hancock, seen shot in the movie, was finally relieved of the bullet by the Surgeon General who had come to say goodbye to him. Hancock agreed to let the doctor try one more time to get the bullet out and the doctor placed Hancock on a chair on a table and operated from below to try to follow the angle of the bullet wound he'd received while horsed. The doctor succeeded and Hancock lived. He was in charge of the prisoners in DC after Lincoln's assassination. My great grandfather had been brought to DC by Secretary Stanton to lead the assassination investigation. Afterwards, he was one of the special judge advocates at the trial, Colonel Henry L. Burnett. Hancock denied the attempt by Johnson to free the only woman convicted, and she was hung. Later attacks on Hancock were answered by my great grandfather, then General Burnett, as he toured the country giving speeches defending both Hancock and Judge Holt. The first I learned about great grandfather was the paper he published in their defense. The library of congress records of the assassination were put together by great grandfather and I was thrilled to get copies of the microfilm showing his handwriting and the nitties of the event. This theme is among the most haunting and moving I have ever heard. It is specially poignant in the final scene, when the Chamberlain brothers meet -- both shell-shocked - and embrace. And military discipline be damned, as they might have said.

A friend asked me to get him a copy of the video and I watched it. When it ended, I started it over again. Bought the soundtrack and the audio book and was completely hooked. Played it continuously as I drove. If there was one music video I HAD to do, it was this one. I actually traveled to Colonel Chamberlain's grave. Extremely moving.

@@MaryVanDeusenFanVids I remember when I first watched the movie (I was doing "Research" really more inspiration for my stop motion film about the Civil War) It was a long road trip to Chicago and I popped the DVD in. I was immediately hooked and did not stop watching till the end. I hold this film responsible for making me such a history buff and eventually a Civil War reenactor.

THAT is exciting! My great grandfather was one of the special judge advocates at the Lincoln Assassination Trial and I found his grave had almost disappeared into the forest. A Civil War reenactors group took over the grave and got an historical marker made. They are the absolute greatest!

Me, too. A friend wanted to write a matching screenplay for the end of the war, since Chamberlain was also there - read Chamberlain's books, if you haven't already; I visited his grave in Maine - and my friend wanted me to find a buddy connection like they used for Gettysburg, but I just couldn't find one as good. He never wrote the screenplay, but that was what got me watching and rewatching Gettysburg.
