    Did you know that more people die from caterpillars than sharks, lions, and bears combined every year? Coyote, Mario, Trent and Jim venture deep into the Costa Rican wilderness again to illustrate just how strong the stinging bristles from these tiny creatures can be. In this episode, Coyote debuts the brand new CATERPILLAR STING PAIN INDEX! You know what that means, Coyote Pack... This may be the first caterpillar sting, but it won't be the last 👀
    Special thanks to Jim Cordoba finding this caterpillar, inspiring the caterpillar sting pain index, and sharing his knowledge about moths and caterpillars for this episode! Hullo, big lepidoptera enthusiast here. You referred to this species as simply the "silkmoth caterpillar" but there's a bunch of silkmoths. The one we farm for silk is Bombyx mori, the domesticated silkmoth, but the Lonomia electra in this video belongs to the family Saturniidae, or the "giant silkmoths" family, which includes iconic moths like the luna moth. Most Saturniid moths aren't venomous as caterpillars, such as the luna moth, cecropia moth, polyphemus moth, emperor moth, imperial moth, etc which are all completely harmless. Even the "hickory horned devil," the regal moth caterpillar which is covered in dangerous looking spines, is completely harmless. However, Saturniids in the genuses Lonomia and Automeris do tend to be venomous.

      @AshLilyNeko 14 днів тому +2

      just wanted to add that in my personal experience you can develop a reaction to the secretions of silk moth caterpillars even if they aren't venomous so they should be handled in moderation. I raised calleta moths for a while and from the little orbs on the caterpillars they secrete this liquid that I assume is to deter predators. I now can’t touch the caterpillars without gloves or I get a rash :( c'est la vie I supposed but it sucks

      that would be amazing but sadly thats not how our bodies work :s
      technically with every sting, his chances of reacting even to one he had an absolute benign "reaction" to previously could be worse if taken again, plus ontop of that being normalized to venom doesnt mean your body can grab viruses n bacteria by the collar and feed em into the biological woodchipper, they still gotta fight for our lives full force no buffs or benefits (maybe besides a better fear/stress response but thats more you conscious choice not molecular level automatic)
      12/10 though i really wish it worked that way

    I may be mistaken, but one of the reasons that the Brazilian caterpillar is deadly is that it lives in groups, and when a person puts a hand on one, it is never just one, it is dozens of them, magnifying the amount of venom injection. They did have people dying from them, but the symptoms were so like some snakebites that physicians kept saying these people encountered a fer-de-lance or a bushmaster. But no, the people that were stung were saying there was no snake involved. The riddle was solved when one girl came in from a citrus grove and they asked if a snake had bitten her, and she said no, and said the Spanish name for the caterpillar. the night something. The light was on. Do not touch an entire pad of these caterpillars. However, you can separate out one, and that might give a much less deadly envenomation. Plus showing what these deadly critters look like so they can be avoided. Here in the US we have IO moth caterpillars and puss moth caterpillars. Both of those are good candidates for the sting insect. Also do handle the harmless but beautiful zebra longwing caterpillar and the gulf fritillary caterpillar, so that people are less frightened of them. They live here in Florida, and people are certain they are poisonous because of their black spines; they are not.

    Last year a friend of mine was stung by an Io moth caterpillar. It latched on to her leg and she was stung multiple times. She had an allergic reaction to it and when she went to the emergency room, they had no clue that caterpillars could sting.

    as a hungarian i always find it fascinating when a big youtuber or celebrity is hungarian, as its a small country and not a lot of people know about it
