Years ago I had a two story that had those shingles. I was able to line up a certified contractor to remove and dispose at a reasonable cost. Given the time it would have taken me I considered it a bargain.
As long as the siding is not crumbling and it is not disturbed in anyway that would cause the fibers to be air born, the siding is not considered to be a hazard. Any peeling lead paint should be a concern.

We own a hone from the 1800 and supposedly has asbestos siding is it unsafe to live here?
