- I will soon be releasing my 2017 video on how to make an ULU knife.....In this video I explain the parts of the process that I now do differently. Make sure to check out the complete documentary "how to make an ULU knife".
Great job designing, and sharpening the Ulu's from old hand saw blades. Great video
Thanks
Absolutely feel and love your frank honesty, it's something that for some reason feels rare now in days! Throwing a big o bag of respect your way!
I have an Ulu from the first batch you made. I use it everyday and love it.
Fantastic! Brooke and I use ours all the time too. Actually I just "found" one in the basement from the first batch I made that I left on the bench and forgot about! So now we have 2.
I like the looks of those especially the dark wood ones. There must be a lot of those old saws at the flea markets down there.
Hey Lonnie. your spot on....they are a dime a dozen down here. I generally don't pay more than a few bucks a piece, at flee markets, for a good saw, but if one is really clean, I'll pay $5 or so......so I don't have to sand the tar out of it, LOL.
I definitely want to get one of your ulu's !
Your work is top notch !!!
Thanks WLBC! I'll have a batch ready soon.
BTW, just stumbled upon the channel, im about 4 videos in, this is the 4th one. Loved the run through video of your 20 year history in your cabin life chapters.
Looking forward to the next one. Great video.
Thanks TZ!
Hey My friend! Another Great video! Thanks for sharing stay Blessed!
Thanks
Planning on making one of these some day! I'll definitely use it for cooking.
Let me know how it turns out. They take a lot of time but are easy to make.
@@Bushradical hey Whip, hope you and your family are healthy and safe??? I have a question... In my day I've run across a lot of old circular blades that were fairly thin that reminded me of the thinness of a old crosscut saw like you use. Do you think those would be thin enough to use for these, and have you ever seen those sawblades I'm talking about??? My Grandpa had a bunch at one time, but I still see them from time to time at yard sales. Be Radical..Ayh!!!
Great. Can’t wait to buy one
Thanks !
I`ve been restoring, selling and collecting vintage saws for years, and have been looking for a way to use badly crimped or not so valuable ones. The etch you showed, if you look closely, you will see a 4 petaled flower...each petal has the profile of a woman`s face. Above that flower are the words "ALWAYS AHEAD" , which to my thinking is a way E.C. Atkins & Co showed they made that particular hardware store saw , without placing their name on it...Their logo was "ATKINS ALWAYS AHEAD". I forget the store, but it partially shows on yours saw. The handle from that saw was cool & unique as well.
Thanks for sharing.
Excellent work and information, thankyou! For the bevel, have you seen a UA-cam video about using a folded towel to get a consistent angle for filing a bevel on an axe blade? I wondered if it might be useful to you in your work on making Uluit.
Thanks Dave
Thanks enjoyed history. There working blade thats for sure.
Thanks
The Ulu knife looks like the kitchen tool used by chefs to clean up their work area, and cut up meat with. Cowboy Kent Rollins from Oklahoma uses a similar tool which he and his wife uses for cooking with also.
Ive seen that tool in restaurants before. It usually has a square bottom. Very similar to an Ulu for sure. Thanks Sidney.
Awesome! Sign me up for an Ulu!
Hey Chris, how you doing brother!
great advice
Thanks
Nice change to the wedge. I bet there is less work to finish the edges. Thanks for sharing. How will we know when the ulus are ready to buy?
I will put up a video to announce when they will be ready , It will be pretty soon
So the splitting wedge works better than say, a cold chisel? Must say I was amazed how well it cut that saw blade.
My son brought one back from Alaska with him for my wife, never heard of one til then, it is fantastic.
How much do you ask for the ULU's? I'm thinking cool Christmas gifts perhaps.
I'll probably have about 3 different options. I'll probably auction the ones with the etching because everyone likes those.
The standard Ulus will be about $67. And I will probably have some "seconds" that aren't as nice but very usable for about $55
As for the tools a big cold chisel will work fine, I just like the mass of the wedge and the wide bit area.
Doesn't have to be perfect looking because that is part of the allure of hand made.
You plan on a new batch of ulu s
I would love to buy one of your Ulu's were are they sold?
I think I might just have to build one, I've got 9 saw blades that belonged to my dad and not one of them have handles. Got a big oak bearl for the handle. Now I just need the time to build it.
Sounds like you are set right up for it!! Let me know how they turn out.
I picked up a couple old hand saw at a yard sale earlier this summer just for this project. I don't have a heavy duty vice, could the blanks be cut out with a cutoff wheel on an angle grinder? I was also wondering if the saw blade material would work well for a fillet knife.
Oh yea itll work, ive made a few knives that way. But when you cut the metal, make sure to clamp it down to the bench. And constantly cool the metal with a wet rag while cutting and grinding the profile so it doesnt lose its temper. Its not ideal knife steel, but it'll work decently
@@benjaminlockhart2792 Thanks for the tip.
You could cut out the sides and top with a cut off wheel, but I would be afraid to mess up the temper by cutting out the blade.......I would just keep an eye out for a good cheap vise.
@Dave Kibbey
No problem man. + 1 to what Dave said about not cutting the edge with it. You can do it, but you need to be really careful not to overheat. Take it very slow, cause once you lose the temper its gone.
A vise sure does make it easier to cut metal, but you dont need it.
I used C-clamps and vise grips to hold metal down to cut it before I bought a vise. Make sure you use 2 clamps or it will rotate and bind the cutoff wheel.
Good vid as I am interested in buying one so how do I go about the info to make sure it is in my price range??? thanks for any help....Good stuff....
Sorry. I sell them from time to time in batches. They sell out very quick. I don't have any right now.
@@Bushradical Thanks for the info....
Bushradical, Please expand on your answer that it is not a ideal knife steel .Not that I would want to give up my Rapala filet knife ,, which I think would be hard to beat after half century of using them.
Other than using epoxy....I make these knives the traditional way, and old hand saws were the material of choice from probably the mid 1800's
Dave, in your opinion, would I be risking the temper if I just scored my pattern line with a Dremel tool before I make the actual break with hammer and chisel? Just wondering if it would make for a more accurate break. Thanks
I dont "think" it would. You can break one out really quick when you get the hang of it.
Dave. Can I buy one of these from you sir?
Have you thought of using circular saw blades instead of regular saw? They are thicker with better steel and you can make at least 4 ulus out of one blade.
great vid, and good information in the comments.
do you know roughly when the shift from fully tool steel handsaw blades to hardened only at the teeth happened? it seems pretty rational, a sort of katana approach, but i did not realize that had occurred. anyway, it would be cool to be able to sort of date the switch, or have some visible identifier if purchasing an old saw at a flea market. i have some saws with the temper zone evident, but i also question if that's real, or some flashy marketing tool.
anyway, you and your girl are doing great work... and i say, "your girl" with full grasp of the greater likelihood that you are "her boy", and that you will be spanked for my semantic malfeasance. good luck, buddy!
thanks for the awesome and informative videos.
LOL. Thanks. As for the saw steel, any saw with brass handle nuts is going to be all the same temper through and through. If you go buy a new saw and the teeth are all a different color than the blade....well they are hardened teeth only.
copy that, brass hardware, and definitely avoid the obvious temper zone... thanks, i'll be eyes open for old ulu stock.
far out. if i actually end up with any cool brand script, i'll send you photos. probably never happen, but here on the east coast old crap has a way of occasionally unearthing itself

Tin snips work too
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Dave, been following you and Brook for quite a while now, love y’alls stuff. I’d be interested in buying one of your ulus. How can i go about doing so?
I may make a few more before Christmas, but I had made about 40 units and they all sold when i listed them on eBay. Took just a few hours to sell out. when I make more I will announce it here on the channel.
Ok, sounds good. When you do announce it, be sure and let us know how your listed on eBay. Thanks again for all the content!
Thanks
I'm definately interested in getting an ulu from you if your still making them.
I'll make some in the fall. Thanks
The one you made that I purchased just fell apart. The wood on one side just fell off. Not sure what glue you used, but it didn’t hold!
How do you go about getting one of you ulus?
Hey Thad, I'll have some ready to ship here shortly. When I do, I'll post an announcement video. They will either be for sale on Ebay or on my website Bushradical.com.
Cool bushman
Thanks
Do you still have ulus for sale?
I was thinking no way but the splitting wedge did a prodigious
job who would have thought that
......
Its my new favorite way!
Are you still selling them? I am interested in purchasing one of yours. (Sorry just found your video today)
I'll make some more in the fall
Hey Dave how are things at the homestead
enjoying fall! Cutting wood and fixing broken stuff, LOL.
please put me in on the bidding for one. thank you bob.
Sorry bob, they all sold the night they were listed.
Very cool. I would definitely buy a few of those from you.
I see there’s 5 miserable and jealous twats giving you a thumbs down.
Seeing that there’s absolutely nothing in this video that would offend a normal person they have to be living a miserable life.
Yeah, there is always someone who cant be happy
If I can’t find an old saw, can I just go to HD and buy a new one?
Unfortunately, No, typically the new ones are only tool steel on the tips and soft steel everywhere else. The old ones are entirely tool steel.
.....no you can't. The new saws are only tempered in the teeth area...the rest of the saw is softer. But you can find an old handsaw at any antique store.
I want one of yours
There will be some ready soon
Just let me know and how to get it
I'll have a few ready soon.
i am so second i missed out last time Please let me know why?/?
I'll have more for sale soon. I'll post a video letting everyone know. Thanks.
Are you still selling?
I have a few. I'll be selling some again soon
How much r they
Not sure yet. I was selling them for around $50 last spring but they will be a bit more than that because they take so long to make.
how do I get one of these from you .
I may make a few more before Christmas, but I'm totally sold out.
@@BushradicalI would like one of them, could I get the one w/the stamp on it if so please tell me the total w/shipping to me. @950 vintage ave, st.helena, cal 94574. thank you bob.
Hey Dave. You still selling those Ulu knives?
I'll be making a batch of Ulus this fall.
Bushradical oh I’m so glad......I’ll be putting in an order as soon as you say they are ready to put on sale.....I have one I use all the time, but love everything you do and your attitude in life.....so I just gotta have one that you’ve put your hands to makin’
I use a dremel
I am so first.
Dave to a Dave, may I ask how much?
Probably around $65
You talked more about other things than How to make the knife!
This is NOT the video on how to make an ULU but the video on what I do different now...its an addendum to the other vid
