I have an excellent tax vehicle which means I don’t pay income tax. I don’t earn enough. Before I quit my job aged 55 and retired, I paid off my mortgage and saved every penny I had. 10 years of frugality. I now live on my savings and a pension that is too small to tax. No point in leaving anything to my kids as the government wants to take a chunk of it.

Working people are massively worse off now compared with decades ago. Life was basic back then but they could afford their rent or could get a mortgage on an ordinary wage and bills and food were affordable plus they didn't have anywhere near the personally debt they have now. The parents also pay national and local taxes, each thereby funding at least one place other than their own child's private schooling. This will be in PPE textbooks for as long as our country exists.
