I agree that 20 years is along time. We live 60-100 years unless you are one of the people with the best gene pool out there. This means out of someone's lifetime even if they make it to 100 (Most do not) you only have to replace the trees around 5 times and that is assuming you inherit the house and land from when you were born. The reality is at the rate of 20 years you will only replace it 1-3 times. People have also chimed in with the comment section stating peaches have a shorter life span. Tipping is easily fixed with stakes.
They are also MORE prolific. They pack MORE density of crop per size compared to a full size standard. Having 10 dwarf trees vs 1 big apple, think about it, not all trees live their lifespan either. They can get disease, all sorts. I've seen 40 year old full sized apple trees give up the ghost because of either damage or disease. If you have 10 or so dwarf ones you are spreading out your chances of success over 15-20 years. Also someone did mention that they have grafted apple trees from the 1960s, dwarf kinds, that are still doing fine. I think with some care in the first 3-4 years, they will last a very long time.

I've seen cases before where someone used air layering techniques to mound up soil around the bottom of the grafted tree and convert it from a dwarf to a standard. I'm tempted to try my hand at that strategy deliberately. Start with dwarfs for a rapid harvest and transition to standard about ten years in.
Good point Tom! I didn't think about it, but often the branch systems and root systems will mirror each other. It may be a good idea to plant the dwarf fruit trees in a closer zone, because they may need more attention and getting replaced more often.

We currently only have one pear tree that is probably semi-dwarf and is old enough that we are planning to remove it soon...we have put off removal the last couple years because it keeps surprising us with a larger crop of fruit than it had been giving previously.

That's why you see ppl mounding mulch oddly high in "dwarf orchards", to stabilize the structural integrity given the shallow roots. Sometimes something isn't a downside if you know how to deal with it. Also just because the roots run shallow doesn't mean you can't build up the surface out pretty Darby mulching the whole area each year aside from the mounding

If you have the extra space burry the graft. Trees grow so much better on their own roots. They will be much healthier, require less attention, produce large yields and live longer 👍

Hello, I am just seeing this May 25th of 2023 as I am considering the possibility of dwarf fruit trees. I don't have a whole lot of room but I do have room for maybe three trees I would like an apple, cherry and I already have an apricot. However, I am seeing in some information where you have to have more than one of the same tree for them to pollinate and get fruit? Is that the case with all dwarf fruit trees or are there some exceptions to the rule

What I am finding with apple tree is you need a pollinator for best production but you need to Google your current growing zone and it will you to decide what will work best for you
Those dwarf trees are grafted. The "dwarf rootstock" is usually from a "dwarf" tree branch, which was air layered. Once the air layer roots are sprouted, they graft on the cultivar. So you don't really have a "real" tree, grown from a seed, with a root ball and a tap root. Those air layer developed roots, without a true root ball and taproot, just aren't going to be that strong or live that long.

There actually are no dwarfing rootstocks for peaches or nectarines commercially available, the only true dwarf peaches are the bonfire and bonanza because they are genetic dwarf. The only rootstocks for peaches currently available are, Lovell, Bailey, nemaguard, halford, and guardian. Some of the experimental dwarf peach rootstocks have poor survival but they aren’t released to the public or available to nurseries.
I did learn a few things. I thought dwarf fruit trees only lived a maximum of 15 years, so that was interesting. I was wondering are dwarf fruit trees self pollinating?

I knew that they only lasted about 2 years. I figure, if you plant new trees every 3 years, you'll keep a good cycle going. Of course, you can also graft on to those trees and have multiple stone fruit variety on one tree to offset space taking by having so many generations of trees. I tried 2 cherry dwarf trees, but I picked a bad spot and they died. I need to raise the cash to chop down all of my extremely tall shady but not very useful to me trees in my yard so I can have a postage stamp orchard.

For every full size standard, you can have 10 dwarf varieties and they will always produce WAY MORE every year when you combine them vs the standard. Pruning becomes easier, as you said, and you can literally control exactly how they grow with MINIMAL effort.
Fruit tree get more delicious the older they are, I have 30 years old water apple tree and it was the most delicious rich taste ever, no 2 years can compete with it.

We have replaced it with a cherry and two apple trees.

Standard dewarf trees with g11 root stock for apples are improved. Fox11 root are improved as well .

You might be able to if it was a big enough tub. I would try w/ 1 or 2 and see how it goes!
What about semi dwarf? Same issues? Same between all of them or peaches just have more problems?
Semi dwarfs are in the middle as far as age wise and root structures
I planted a wind barrier around my food forest. I used Cedar in Cypress trees.
Make sure the cedar isn't close to apples. Cedar trees carry a disease deadly to apples and contract it easily

Yes that is probably to close, but there is the espalier method you could use to grow an apple tree along a fence or building.

Dwarf trees last about 15-20 years, unfortunately that’s about how old mine all are! Yes a fruit cocktail tree is great for a small yard.
