En 2017, sa population était estimée à 294 356 habitants et 401 499 pour la zone métropolitaine, ce qui en fait la ville la plus peuplée d'Alaska. Le nom complet d'origine est Knik Anchorage qui signifie « Knik Anchorage » (Knik était l'ancien village inuit dont le nom signifie « feu »). En 1914, lors de sa fondation, Anchorage n'était qu'un port, un point d'ancrage pour la construction de l'Alaska Railroad.

The original full name is Knik Anchorage meaning "Knik Anchorage" (Knik was the ancient Inuit village there whose name means "fire"). In 1914, when it was founded, Anchorage was only a port, an anchorage for the construction of the Alaska Railroad.
