Like so many other people, I decided to change my tires after seeing your video. Thanks man!! You are kind of saving lives 👏👏
Thanks for making this video.
Appreciate the calm rationale explanation and not just pumping fear and anxiety out there.
You're welcome. No need to be dramatic.👍
Excellent tip! Dry rot will definitely get you, and has gotten me in the past with a blow out. Now when i see any dry rot i change them immediately. Thumbs up!
Thanks Buggy, good advice is worth it's weight in gold.
Good to know. As I’m looking to replace one tire due to bad struts on one side. I noticed tiny small hairline cracks (nothing huge) in between the groove. Thinking replacing just one as other have 8/32 left but debating now since you warned me about potential blow out! Yikes.
Guess Costco going to earn my $980 this weekend lol
Even better. Get 303 protectant and spray on all components you don't want to fail, tires, cv axle, ball joint, suspension rubbers, belts, hoses, wiper plates, etc..
I buy it by the gallons.. saves huge $$$ and makes your car look like new, better for resale to..
Never go cheap on tires or brakes! You and your family ride on them! Awesome Amsoil sticker too!
Good advice!
THANK YOU BUD FOR TAKING YOUR TIME AND CONTRIBUTE WITH EXCELLENT SAFETY VIDEO.
Saw very similar cracking in the grooves on all 4 tires on my F150. Hesitant to switch out with what looks like another 2 years of tread still left and the price of replacing that much rubber. Watched your video and realized I'm putting my family's lives and possibly others on the road at an unnecessary, possible lethal risk. Yours is one of those youtube videos that save lives. Much appreciated! Going to the shop right now for the switch out.
Good choice! Nobody wants to spend the money but it's well worth it. Thanks Bob for the comment.
Must be a spray to protect the rubber from dry rot....without affecting the tyre grip etc...
Very well done, this all fell together so beautifully at the end! The time and energy you put into putting this exceptional work of art together was well worth it! Thank you so much, can not wait until your next adventure!
Thanks Jake.
Thank you. This was so much more informative than a tread test with a penny.
Glad you liked it. Stay safe!
Funny I came across this video. I'm a used car dealer, and I just sold a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500. I got it from auction with 40k miles. I don't know if they were the original tires or not, but I tried to decipher the date of manufacture, and I couldn't because I don't know how to decipher 3 digit date codes. Tires started using 4 digits in the year 2000, so by having 3 digits, the tires were from 1999 or older. But there was enough tire tread to pass state inspection, so I sold it.
23+ year old tires at highway speed is not a good idea. Have you considered the liability this puts on your business even if the vehicle is sold As Is?
@@ozzstars_cars, actually, that's what AS-IS does, disclaim liability, or rather the implied warranty of merchantability. UCC 2-314 explains that unless excluded or modified, consumer goods are to be merchantable, or of average fit and quality of comparable goods. In regards to used cars, that means that the car would provide safe and reliable transportation (American Suzuki Motor Co. v Carney, Skelton v General Motors, Carlson v General Motors). But like I said, it says "unless excluded or modified". That means that the implied warranty for merchantability can be disclaimed, and even points to the section that explains the process and what it means, UCC 2-316. It states that by disclaiming the merchantability, the consumer is buying goods without expectation that the goods are fit. In regards to a car, the car will not provide safe, and will not provide reliable transportation. And it explains that the seller must use language in common understanding that the merchantability has been disclaimed, and gives examples "with all faults", or "as-is". Not only that, I also won't sell unless the customer signs the FTC Used Car Buyer's Guide. It informs the customer that the car being purchased could have defects, such as a bad engine, bad transmission, a broken frame, and also damaged tires.
AS-IS means that the customer agrees, in writing, that the car is not fit for the road.
So the question would be, how could I be expected to be liable if the customer, in writing, understood that the vehicle was unfit for the road? As far as I knew, I thought he was going to park it in his yard and use it as a lawn ornament. I never claim that any of my cars are fit for the road. I don't have time to disassemble each car down to the bare frame and inspect each and every bolt, nut and screw. I didn't even know about the tires on the truck until the customer came along and was nit-picking at every minor detail. People try that to get a deal. They want to pay less, and get free upgrades. I do neither. If they want to buy, that's great. If not, no problem, I sell to someone else.
I apologize for the long comment, it's just that some people try to tell me that AS IS means something else. I had one person tell me that AS-IS means that the car is perfect "as it is". I know what AS-IS means.
@John Davis it all comes down to the lawyers and a judge and in some cases a jury of one's peers. It best to disclose the issue before it gets ugly.
@@ozzstars_cars, absolutely. As a matter in fact, I am legally required to disclose material facts that I reasonably believe is pertinent to the consumer. But like I said earlier, I didn't know about the age of the tires until the guy started nit-picking over every little detail. I cannot be expected to disclose what I don't know.
Thanks for posting , makes it easier to show others that are not car people.
I was looking for tires and came across this very crack in-between the tread. You helped me to not make a bad choice and purchase those tires. Thank you
👍
I was on that same track @ Spring mountain, last October (awesome times)! Great job on this tire message, not many people know that.
I was there the first week of November, awesome two days! Take care Nick.
Great info Ozz. Had the same issue with my 87 Vette. It was tough discarding Goodyear Eagles when the tire depth was still good.
I have seen the damage exploding tires cause to Vettes. Fiberglass everywhere, it ain't pretty. Better safe than sorry.
Great video thanks brother. Lots of people never think about tires until it's to late. Great job showing the problem and explaining the problem. Nice race at the end of the video. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother
Thanks Scott! Appreciate your comment.
I had some questions and you just answered them. Thank you for taking the time to make the video.
Glad to help. Thanks for the comment.
This is the exact video I was looking for! I'm not kidding it couldn't be any better!🤗😇
Good news! -Glen (Ozz)
Thanks man for the info..I'm checking my tires now 👍
Great video. Thanks for the public service.
Thank you so much from the UK for explaining the tyre cracking issues. It makes it all the more obvious when seeing the tyre in cross section. I noticed some slightly lighter cracking in my tyres this morning and your video has make my mind up that its just not worth the risk. I will be getting some new tyres ASAP.
Good idea David replacing those dry rotted tires! Thanks for the comment mate!
I have the same thing on my tires!! I thought because it had a lot of the thread!! I would be good! But I just ordered new ones coming in next week!!
Thanks for the video!!
Got to be safe! Thanks for your comment.
Some very good info there Glen 👍🏻
Thank you sir.
Thanks, you video was just needed to understand my tire issue.
Great tips ozzstar bro
Thanks for your post! Much appreciated from Mike and Celeste in LA, California.
You're welcome!
Great warning video , safety first !
Glen great video brother. Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate you stopping by and thanks!
Hey,,Thanks much I have the same exact tires with same exact problem..I bought a new set this morning and was second guessing myself for it until I watched your video..Now I can clearly see I did the right thing
Absolute good decision!
Excellent Sir
Thanks
Thanks for the info. I'm obviously watching this video for the same reason many of us are. Because we have tire rot and or cracks and most of us are hoping to hear someone tell us that it's ok, put the wallet back in the pocket and save your money, lol. But no, it appears that I won't be let off that easy. I guess it's time for me to change my tires. Thanks for the video.
Stay safe Humberto!
Yup. I have 3 tires with dry rotting and didn’t even realize it was a terrible safety concern for tires. Immediately changing them after these holidays are over..
Thanks for sharing this information!
Your welcome, thanks for watching.
Great video. Thanks for the info!
Very helpful...thank you sir!
I had cracks along both treads on all 4 tyres, was hesitating to replace tires or drive little bit more, cos I made only 40k km’s in full 5 years period, was not driving so much last 1,5 years due to pandemic. But watching you video decided to replace tires as soon as possible. Thank you and greetings from Azerbaijan!
You made a good decision. Thanks for your comment.
Well done video!
Thanks Roger!

This is so helpful visual information, to see the cracks open up for the metal threads.
So I saw some rot on my all seasons and thought nothing off it. I thought I'd look up videos about it and glad I came to yours. I'm going get them changed ASAP because the "savings" of $500-$800 CAD is not worth my life. Great advice and glad you showed the actual reason why it's a bad idea to drive on these kind of tires.
Hey Dunc, glad the video was helpful to you. Good decision spending your money wisely on new tires! -Glen
I'm a widow and I have some bad tires I want thank you for your great knowledge that you have given us
You're welcome, thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the video! Great info.
👍
Thanks for the video.
You are welcome!
Great video ozzstar
Thanks Antonio
I went and had my tyres changed on thr front and they said the rears were cracked. I wasn't sure if it's just to sell more tyres but this video has made me sure and prevented a safety issue for me, so thanks
Glad the video helped!
Very Informative... Thank you!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video that shows the deterioration of a good quality tire that has aged.
Pretty bad for only a few years old.
Dry rot will definitely screw you over if you're in the middle of nowhere. I've always wondered why the gauge cluster keeps giving me low tire pressure messages. Then I realized the tires had cracks and were dry.
There's tips you can use to find out if the tire is in the need of replacement due to dry rot:
1. Try moving the tires with one finger. Release the parking brake in order to check if the tire is movable with one finger. If the tire moves with one finger then the tire doesn't need to be replaced. If it doesn't move and you try moving it with 2 fingees or your even your entire hand then replace it.
2. Coloration of the tires. Check to see if it's gray. If it's gray then you may need to replace the tire.
3. Cracks (obviously). These things will get large when you drive fast. So it's best to replace them immediately because sometime in your life it'll get you.
Hello - what do you mean if the tires “moves?”
@markostertag1101 if the tire moves then the tire doesn't need to be replaced. What I mean that if the tire moves while trying to move it with 1 finger, the tire doesn't need to be replaced.
Just put your car in park without the parking brake on and try moving it with one finger with pressure. If it moves back and forth then the tire is fine. If it doesn't then the tire must be replaced since that's a sign the tire has lost grip or it's dry rotted.
I have noticed not all tires brands I've had over time experience the same cracking. Good vid bud I switch them out every 5 years. I let the tire shop dispose of them but I know they keep the ones that look good and sell them to resellers that ship them to countries where used tires are sold at a premium.
Yes used tires are in demand but not for guys like us. :-)
Thanks so much!!
Yuuuge! Thanks for this video
I did not know this so I checked my nice tires and sure enough I have a lot of dry rot on all my tires it looks dangerous cracks etc I’m upset but idk money lost life saved
Great info mate 👍, 5 months ago I replaced all my 4 tyres for the same reason, I think yours were ready to pop 😬... cheers
They were dangerous. New tires are nice and quiet and grip well. 😉
Perfect timing for me. I have a vehicle that I don't drive much. The rears have 5+mm of tread, but there is obvious cracking throughout the tread area. This answers my question. 4 new tires. Cha ching. Ouch.
Better safe than sorry. New tires are cheap compared to a blowout.
Very useful, thanks
You're welcome, thanks for stopping by the channel.
I was pondering swapping the tires on my truck out for others without cracks.
Now I understand completely what's happening to the tire. The pond story clinched the decision.
Making good choices.
Nice video, thanks!
You're welcome Josh
Had some small cracks in my rear, was super worried but you reassured me it can last 2 days till the my scheduled tire change. Tread height tho... 😬
I noticed cracks a coupe weeks ago just above the bead on my E150 van, matching set with lots of tread left. Put it off, but filed away as needed to be done. Yesterday front left blew out with no warning, lost all pressure instantly. Just 10 mins before I was on the highway doing 70 in rush hour traffic. Luckily was off the highway and only doing 30 when it blew. Lesson learned. Sitting at tire shop now getting a new set.
Glad it wasn't worse. Replacing those tires are nothing compared to what could have been. Thanks for sharing your story. -Glen
I just picked up 4 rims with tires from the salvage yard and all 4 tires had the same dry rot as yours. I was almost going to use one of them on the rear until I saw your video....wow and I drive the explorer SUV. Thanks for stopping me from the same fate as the suv in the pond! Love the cut tires, I was looking for a cut away, and the bolt cutters, good idea.
Glad the video was helpful Andrew. It's not worth taking a chance driving with defective tires. Stay safe!
Thanks very much
You're welcome Carlos
Great video pal 👍 very informative
Thank you Sir Samson!
Greetings from England. Thanks for the video. The first job tomorrow is a new tire.
Stay safe mate!
@@ozzstars_cars Cheers.
I agree that safety is important of course especially if you have children. Very good advice.
Unfortunately for some of us drive on cracked tires because I can't afford the new tire high prices that are ridiculously marked up and they're mostly poor quality unless you spend a lot more on Michelin.
And trucks and vans destroy the front end tires. New or old they get destroyed anyways.
Great job
Appreciate your comment, thanks.
Nice thought buddy, did a good job.. 👍
Thanks
Nice crackalaka vid Glen. We send all of our old tires to Magnus Environmental in New Castle. They shred 'em
That's good to know, thanks man.
Good video Ozz. I've got some trailer tires that are dry rotted but I don't think they're as bad as those!
Change them if you can, it's not worth the risk.
Great video, been wanting to see what dry rot looks like cut open
Not a good sight to see?
Thank u for your help… I was thinking about getting too used tires but it was cracks similar to what do you have in two of the treads between the treads on the status of the tire and I was wondering if I should buy them so now I’m watching your video I guess I’m not going to because I don’t want to get into an accident thank you very much for taking the time to help me
Excellent decision. Keep in mind when the tires have pressure in them those cracks get even bigger! No good. Buy new tires if you can.
Thankyou bro
A public service announcement and track time! Great visual by cutting up the tires. Bummer that you only got 25k out of them though, tires aren’t cheap. Good ones anyway.
Yeah I usually get 7-9 years and more mileage, kind of sucks cause they aren't inexpensive.
Tread depth is important only because it is measurable and good for legal inspection. Rubber is rubber so it needs to be flexible. Assume u waste 1 tire in every set and change a bit early. Be safe. Maybe 20 years ago, rear left tire exploded going 100 kmh 60 mph. a station wagon. Old tires. We were 5 people in the car. It was terrifying. If it had been the front tire or a bit faster, could be fatal. I always change the tires every 3 4 years or after 40 50 k kms 30k miles. Some of the tires still have half of the tread or are good for 1 more year. I dont care
Always better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks! Super useful. I have a motorcycle with 13 year old tire on the front of all places, 10 year old tire on the rear. But the cracking is almost undetectable, very very tiny sort of crackling that I bet is on the less than a millimeter deep, actually far less than that I could probably sand it to test, anyway it was great to see that cut away and learn what the dangerous cracks are! Pretty sure these were garaged and I so they're probably fine for me to relearn, I'll just assume that I can't go all Indy 500 on them, so the next 10,000 miles will be perfect for me to take 'er easy and be extra cautious while I get back into the swing of riding, then get new tires-and make sure to break them in this time (learned the hard way :)-then have some fun!
If I were you I'd replace those motorcycle tires asap. Not only are they old and dry rotted but the rubber is hard and brittle. Motorcycles need traction when leaning. New tires will be soft and pliable sticking to the road. Don't risk your health or someone else's life over $500.
Very true Glen. Tires are a cheap insurance policy.
Actually they are expensive insurance. lol
I noticed that on my excursion, i was heading out of town in 2 days. I immediately went to the shop soon as kt opened before I left town
Wise investment.
Nice channel!!! Thanks for sharing !!! Thumbs up!!!
Thank you for taking the time to comment. -Glen
I have some 17’s Toyo tires that I bought in 2018 i left them on a firebird and never drove it till rightnow. Since then the rain and sun cracked them. They got multiple minor cracks not on the side, only on the grips. I was told Toyo tires are a good brand and good heavy duty tires. They will last on a road trip.
If they are that new they may be covered under warranty. Check with the manufacturer.
Hola long time don’t see ,good video I have that issue with Cooper ADVENTURE omg need some asap 😢gracias
You got it Moses! Throw away those dangerous tires.
Thanks for showing us your crack!
LOL 😁
I have those cracks in the tread too and have been looking at new ones. Yikes!
New tires make a big difference!
Thanks for the video... I checked my tires and guess what... I have cracks in all 4 of my tires... and I'm supposed to tow my brand new RV this weekend... Guess I'm gonna go get some new tires!!! Thanks again!
Glad the video was helpful. Enjoy the new RV!
Don't be cheap on tires, it's more expensive to get towed if you get a blow out and cause an accident. Years ago I saw a mini truck of some handyman (overloaded with tools and whatnot) blow out a rear tire and swerve left 3 lanes to the center divider taking out a motorcycle. I also see many clunker cars on the shoulder with a blownout tire still wrapped around the rim. Luckily they could drive off the travel lanes.
That accident with the motorcycle must have been bad. Good advice, don't be cheap and replace those tires!
All I saw was 2 legs in the air, he might of just landed on the hood or on top of a car. It was in Montclair CA I-210 in morning traffic average speed was 50 mph. I think the mini truck was also towing a trailer, it was weird how a rear blowout caused the swerve.
@@stoundingresults wow
Shop says my tires are splitting but they look fine to me they were made in 2021. Still have plenty of tread. It's hard to find USA tires. I will look closer at my tires.
Ask the shop to show you where the cracks and splits are. Dry rot is a safety issue.
@@ozzstars_carsI looked and i do see some minor cracking around the tread area.
I just noticed the Autel MaxiSys Pro MS908P in your "Check out some cool tools that Ozzstar likes to use" link. I searched your videos... I'm looking for the video you have on it (or review). Did I miss it or you haven't made one yet?
I haven't made a vid on that but I do use the silicone grease in a few vids.😂
That is a massive crack between the tread
Oh yeah it is. Look out! haha
The title is HILARIOUS. Don't drive on Crack
😁🤭😁
Thank you, will get them changed, as you say not worth risking life to save some money
Good call Emerald. 👍💯
I did notice some cracking on the tread of my left tire and i did get it changed i was very lucky because there was a Bulge in the tread of my tire. Guess the seller who sold me the car was full of it when he said the tires had 40% tread left and they were 3 years old.
The budgeting can happen at anytime. Usually from a hard impact running something over or a pot hole. Good that you found it.
around these parts you'd see cracking around 7-10 years
I thought you would say about 21+. lol
Those are young tires for having that bad of cracking. I used to swear by BFGs but they crack as bad as the Yokohamas you took off in the video. I have some TSL Super Swampers I paid $300-$400 a piece for nearly 20years ago that don't have any cracks(I don't run them anymore/offroad spare only). I've had cheap Chinese tires hold up better than some of the Name Brands. I think it has to do with the amount of UV protectants the manufactures put into the rubber when they make it. I started years ago only using Mequires #40 as it is one of the few water based and UV protecting tire shines, but I've also heard good things about the 303 Aerospace.
Yes I agree the quality of rubber is skeptical. The amount of oil used during the manufacturing process has a lot to do with it, and how long it lasts.
Great Video! I learned a lot today... I have tread, but the service guy said "you gotta change them!" I have dry rot! I had no idea that my tires were rotting. So, Ok, I learned a lot today, and now doing some research before I plunk down some moolah to fix the problem. So, yes, thank you for your video. It confirms what I saw today at the shop. Now.... any ideas on the best tires? Firestone v. Michelin... or is that even a fair comparison? ...I'd appreciate some thoughts - thank you in advance!
The best tire is a name brand with the lowest price that fits your vehicle. Glad the video was helpful!
My tires were made in 2018 and they have 26,000 miles on them, I just noticed a bunch of cracks today. theyre smaller cracks but it does look like they’re getting deeper. I need to replace them. Costco has really good promotions on Michelins right now so that’s probably what I’ll do.
Good idea for safety plus the car will ride smoother and quieter.
Good video ! I am about to travel from Miami to Daytona and my Firestone tires have some rot, little veins not on the side but on the top and inside the tread they are not too big, tires are like 4 years already and the two on front are almost flush to the tread indicator, firestone did not wanted to rotate them due to the rot, should I change them? Specially if going 5 hours away on the highways... thanks again!
If in doubt change them out.
They don't make 'em like they used to that's for sure, my decades old spare shows no cracks yet 4-5 year old tires are all cracked up with plenty of tread left. It's the quality of rubber and synthetic additives, they say it's "eco" but I think they do it just to sell more tires.
💯%
I just replaced the tires on my daughter's RAV4 yesterday. The old tires were 6 years old with plenty tread left (5/32 to 6/32). But I saw minor cracks forming due to exposure to weather and the elements. So the old tires must go.
Good call.
@@ozzstars_cars Exposure to the elements here in CO really affects the tire condition noticeably. At the same time I bought those tires for my daughter's RAV4 in 2014, I also bought a new set of tires for my wife's Camry. For the first 4 years, both cars were parked in the garage. But the RAV4 pretty much stays outside the garage for the last 2 years since my daughter took it to college where she has no garage facility. The difference in amount and severity of cracks between the tires on the RAV4 and Camry is quite significant. The same 6-yr old tires on the Camry barely show any crack at all. Regardless, I plan to replace the tires soon as well. I don't want my family to drive on tires older than 8 yrs old, regardless of tread depth and absence of crack.
I periodically spray the outside wall of my tires with 303 Protectant and as much of the tread as I can . Now I'm going to spray the inside , since I have access to a mechanics lift .
Doesn't do much for the tread though does it?
@@ozzstars_cars I doubt it , I found the use of 303 protectant on UA-cam Channel , Sweet Project Cars . It didn't made sense to me , as friction between rubber and asphalt / concrete . He even suggested to let in soak inside new tires before installing . Though the things he said I don't agree with . But it does protect against UV rays and makes rubber supple .
@@peterrudy9207 is your informant's name Scotty?
good video man I have 35s for my truck and they have cracks and are very dry but the side wall is good and the cracks are not that bad not too too deep but they are all over the 4 tires is it something I have to worry about ?
Cracks in tires are not good, dry rotted and dangerous.
Here in California most people run the tires until they exploded. LOL
I believe it!
There just so expensive I understand safety but at the same time it’s almost worth risking. And I know that’s bad but people don’t have money all the time
In NYS we have some of the toughest and stupidest laws but allow 2/32” of Tire tread. Last weekend we had 24+ inches of snow and guess who was going off the roads, couldn’t make it up hills and made it unsafe for the rest of us? But don’t you dare have tinted windows !
The laws are crazy sometimes. Drive safe man, more snow is coming!
Very wise words, and well illustrated, thanks! But....were you one of the Zombie Actors on Walking Dead???
You spotted me huh? lol Thanks
Here in england it is an m.o.t fail "partial seperation of material" lots of testers do not know this and always think they know better with the response of "can you see ply/cord?" Nothing to do with partial seperation!!!!! Different r.f.r reason for refusal!
Damn bro that beard and stache are incredible.
Yeah man! haha 👍
