  • In 1997 I filmed Renee Fleming during a recording session of Schubert's music. She was accompanied on piano by Christop Eschenbach, who at the time was heading up the Houston Symphony Orchestra. He is now the music director of the National Symphony Orchestra. It was a privilege to work so closely with such great talent. This was the second film I did with Renee and she was a total pleasure to work with.

She is as beautifull as her voice. I also love to watch opera singers sing in their own clothes :P

Fleming was absolutely at her peak in this recording, it is an incredible disc. But Eschenbach is a superlative collaborator and supports her superbly well. I wish they'd gone on to record more lieder together. The Strauss Heroines disc they did together a year later is maybe the finest thing they have both recorded in their entire catalogues.

After all these years it has shown Fleming is a master in music!
Loving this disc, one of my first ones I bought.

Christiaan d'Hooghe It's funny that Renee says having Eschenbach work with her on this recording gives her credibility. I guess after all these years, she now has more than enough credibility!!

Schubert at the top of her form. No one has sung this more beautifully (and she was sitting down?!)

Even if you don't like the music, you will love the lady.

Hilarious that Fleming is creating the greatest sound ever at the end all folded up on the chair! It's not the same takes as made it to the final recording as she does the diminuendo on kuss as Eschenbach had suggested earlier, which isn't on the disc.

Who would have believed,at the time this video was recorded, that this cutie-patootie opera singer would become one of the most well known singers in the world??

Wonderful video. I have a question for the person who posted it. Is there also a video of the session for her legendary recording of the 4 last Songs with Eschenbach? I've seen one of the Mozart album and now the Schubert, so I was wondering if the Strauss one exists also. Thanks so much!

Wonderful music- but can I ask why so much camera movement and so many quick change shots and visual effects.
I know it is the fashion to run around with a Steadicam but am I alone in the world who actually can't watch it because it makes me feel slightly nauseous.
I honestly don't mean this to be rude - but just as the pianist and singer are there to support and translate Schubert's intentions for the listener shouldn't the film support that endeavour too and not distract? I suppose I am not so much having a go at this film but the general fashion in film making these days that if a shot lasts more than 5 seconds or doesn't have movement of visual effects then the audience get bored - can I put a vote in for the fact that in a lot of cases simpler is better.
