Coati Mundi served as one of the Music Supervisors for the Miramax film “54”. For the role of street-savvy “Anita,” they wanted an actress who could also sing and dance. The production asked me to conduct the auditions for this role.
One of the people auditioning was the mega-talented Taral Hicks who at that time was mainly known for her role as Jane, the girlfriend of Rober De Niro’s son in “A Bronx Tale”, played by Lillo Brancato. Jr.
At one point, I surprised her by joining her for a Disco Hustle. To her credit, she did not lose a beat and went with it. Taral did well, however, the role was eventually given to Salma Hayek. I did campaign for them to find a spot for Taral but all the roles were filled.
BONUS TIDBIT
Salma ended up lip-synching "The Night I Fly", a disco song written for the film by Bunny Hull and Thelma Houston, sung by Nayobe Gomez, and produced by Coati Mundi. Unfortunately, it was not included on the soundtrack album.
