  • The beach may be a place of wonder, beauty, relaxation and fun, but there are also some dangers. However, with our beach safety tips, you can help protect your family and have a great day playing in the sand and surf. So, before you head out, Dr. Peter Wernicki, a member of the American Red Cross Science Advisory Council, offers up these simple tips for beach safety:
    • Because swimming in the ocean isn't the same as swimming at a pool, try to choose a beach where there's a lifeguard on duty. This way, you can get information on what to expect before you head out, like details on high and low tide, sandbars, dangerous marine life in the area, etc. And he or she will be on scene to provide care or rescue assistance if you need it.
    • Always be realistic about your swimming abilities and don't push yourself or your friends or children to do something they're not ready or able to do.
    • Be aware of where your kids are at all times. Even if they have safety equipment with them, that equipment can be lost, which could put them in a dangerous situation. That's why we believe the most important beach safety tip for kids is to be accompanied by an engaged adult or parent who will not only help protect them as they have fun, but who can help them make good decisions along the way.
