Greetings back at 'ja from U.S. I actually tried to scratch design and build a small RC flying wing glider (including the airfoil) as a kid, and I did know enough to reflex the airfoil, at least. I just drew something that looked pretty to the eye (a semi-symmetrical reflex), 30% or so max thickness chord positioning, with reasonable aspect ratio, then drew out a tapered swept plan-form, etc.
It flew, after a fashion, actually didn't glide half bad, but the breakaway at stall, when you traversed the positive angle of attack just a BIT too far, was well BEYOND brutal...it would basically do an almost half forward somersault in one point in the sky. Fun (and funny) when up at altitude, however, on landing, not so much. Probably why I tagged the F.W. on this vid. as on of my favorites.
They generally aren't that stable when everything is done RIGHT, and CG location at LEAST far enough rearward is CRUCIAL. Do something even a bit wrong (or several things, probably, in my case), and I can verify first hand, they are a handful and a half. I'll bet if I had iterated it a few times, and at least done some rudimentary airfoil L/D and stall profiles in a makeshift "tunnel" (moving car and instrumented stand, probably) I could have gotten it a good bit better, but working in scratch built balsa built-ups that is time consuming (and costly, for a kid). Also betting I would know a LOT more about them if I had, there is no better teacher than the hammer over the head of a re-kitted (re-scratched, actually) model to "teach" you quickly.
And yeah, I became an engineer later in life, electrical though...not sure why...probably because I wanted to take on an area I knew practically nothing about...not sure that was the wisest choice, even now, in retirement. My brother, who SUCKED at mechanical things, so to speak, (he once hammered all the bearings into a four speed tranny he was rebuilding ACROSS the balls, ie block hammering the inside race to seat the outside of the bearing, and vise-versa...(all he had to do was ASK), and if i know him, hammering it in several more good SOLID whacks with the cases standing on something virtually non-compressible, on concrete, to make sure each one was "really seated" after it long since WAS... and that was just one of many cluster***s that ensued) and that tranny whined like a baby), went, you guessed it, mechanical, thermal actually. My dad, also an engineer who did VERY well (trained in physics), used to shake his head and he had no idea why we both went contrary to our early leanings and strengths...he was likely correct.
Far better mostly large scale RC show than I ever witnessed here, I'll say that, too. I was happy to see that nothing cratered. If I owned some of those very large planes, I think I'd literally be shaking every time I flew it (cost and time invested), but maybe not, after SEVERAL uneventful flying hours...maybe. I did build a full sized LongEZ, with the old man, but we only got it about half way (unfinished almost totally completed air frame) before he ran into medical problems and I FINALLY went back to school (been married and working at a fun, but crappy paying job, for about five years). I'm virtually certain flying that would not have made me nervous at all, after just a couple of flights (it flew great after the guy we sold it to, a friend of dad's from work, finished it, for many years, until he finally sold it, and we lost track). Weird how the ACTUAL reality of the risk of a situation has little bearing on REAL risk, like getting into a car and taking off into traffic filled with idiots invokes zero fear and trepidation, as it REALLY SHOULD, when you look at the actual data. I'll leave you with that uplifting thought...sorry. Cheers.

Hi Colt 4570, At that time before 2.4 MHz we used 35 MHz equipment in Europe
for planes and 40 MHz for boats. 72 was not permitted for RC

Outstanding video, excellent music in background. Very well run event and the camera work and editing are superb. One of the nicest flying fields I've seen, grass nicely cut and the soil base seems to be very flat with almost no bumps or snags. Even the small wheeled planes did well on that surface. Thank you for this vid.

F-86 Sabre is CLICK BAIT, it dosen't fly. However it does offer a huge assortment of RC Aircraft. Otherwise it's a waste of time. If you want see the F86, it's around 1:13:35

ScaleJetFred oh yeah, Ive loves models since the 70’s with my dad. I wasn’t being critical. I only noticed it and commented because it was the only mistake I think I saw. Plus the Corsair is my favorite war bird. I can’t believe how big the models and even the controllers are getting. Great show.

If these toys get any larger the FAA will require licenses to put those things in the air. Or lest existing flying fields will be shutdown.

You are of cause correct with your comment. For your information: any model Plane over 25 kg weight needs to have a special license to get of the ground. in addition, the pilots also ned to pass an exam to operate those.
Since this year, every operator of model planes and also Drones have to pass an exam to fly. Depending of weight this is more difficult to obtain for operating heavier than 25 kg weight.

I know that these models are perfectly happy and capable of taking off on fields etc like this but with the amount of money involved I'd want a lovely smooth tarmac runway to take off and just landing on the grass maybe? In fact I saw a Bush plane with a parachute that explodes out the top if things get out of hand. Have wondered why they're not installed in some models too. Would save a lot of work and money probably.
Hi Rupert! LaFerte Alais is a light aeroplane - mainly historical -airport and in this case used because those very large models nee plenty of runway length for safe Take Off and Landings.
Traditionally Model Flying field in Europe are grass fields and the modellers are used to fly like this.
In principal you are correct with your observation.

1999 Wren company from England presented a working test Turbo Prop at the German Top Gun event. I alsso took some video of this.
To day there are two types: one specificly for RC Helicopters and the more poular in-line one for Large

To day with even stricter regulations such large models and their operators / pilots have to pass very strict tests before they can pu these in to the air!

Oja, das hat auch einen Grund. Ich habe Videobearbeitung ganz am Anfang des Videofilmens (1987) bereits betrieben. Damals, analog, bis heute, digital, schnippele ich noch an den Aufnahmen(die heute meine Frau macht) herum. Ich habe sogar ein Gewerbe betrieben und das über 20 Jahre. Hauptsächlich habe ich im Auftrag die Spiele von Eintracht Braunschweig und später vom VfL Wolfsburg gefilmt. Unter meinem Synonym "PitBoomer" kannst du hier bei UA-cam einige wenige Videos ansehen. Die besten Grüße aus Sachsen/Anhalt, wo ich seit 2 Jahren lebe. Übrigens, mein Name ist Peter (62)
Da freue ich mich um so mehr! meine erste Filmkamera war eine Boulieu,
musste diese abgeben da die Ratenzahlungen zu hoch waren. Spaeter ging es weiter mit einer Nizzo 560 un 800 die ich noch immer habe.
Digital erst mit einer Sony 8, dann Sony Hi8 und sofort auf DV umgestellt als es angeboten wurde. Editiert wurde erst wie bei Euch, dann mit HAMA und mit den Vorgaengern von Grass Valley Edius das ich in Version 7.5 verwende. Ich wuensche Euch noch viel Spass und Erfolge.
Hallo Peter, Ich komme aus Bad Muskau/Lausitz (Sachsen) von wo ich 1959 nach Berlin ohne Erlaubnis gereist bin um am 8.8.59 mit eine Super Constellation der PanAm von Tempelhof nach Frankfurt geflogen bin.
Der Rest ist Geschichte! Obwohl seit 1970 in Dublin lebend, war ich laufend im Ausland- USA, Mexico Central Amerika, Japan Indonesien e.t.z. und reise noch immer, aber jetzt privat, Die Lufthansa liebt mich!!!

Na, das freut mich wenn mancchmal ein Lob als Kommentar gesendet wird Lothar! Ich filme schon seit 1963, damals mit eine Nizzo 8mm Filmkamera. Das war noch In Darmstadt und ab 1970 in Irland.
Sobald es das Video 8 von Sony gab wurde umgestellt, obwohl das editieren (mit HAMA) auch sehr langsam ging.
Erst als editieren professionel wurde habe ich auf den Vorgaenger von EDIUS umgestellt un habe jeden Fortschritt mitgemacht.
Aehnlich bei Kameras, einige stehen noch immer bei mir herum - alles Sony.
Obwohl seit 50 Jahren in Dublin, habe ich doch viel in Deutschland und auch 2 mal LaFerte Alais in Frankreich und auch 2 Mal in Las Vegas (TOC) mitgemacht.
So sind jetzt 145 videos aauf mene, UA-cam ScaleJetFred Kanal.

Yes Daveapplemotors! RC models of different weight groups may need a special licence issued by the countries authorities.
The maximum in Europw is 250 kg. With weight above this it is NOT classified as model and can not be dislayed using standard RC equipment!

Great Planes & show but the filming was rough and the editing was flat out terrible. I mean, that B52, and soooooo many others like the WW I planes and modern jets, were all edited in the worst way.
The sound recording could have been greatly improved in the editing but instead, they chopped out the best and often, most important moments of almost all these flights.
That Connie was beautiful but the video, sound, and of course, the editing, (the editing will make or break any video) were all below the most basic amateur level, at best. Still, the planes were excellent and even with poorly edited video and sound, one could still get a good idea of the scale, detail, and precision of these RC builds.

@@ScaleJetFred Thanks Fred! I don't need crashes... I used to build and fly RC from 1980 to about 1988 and I preferred stick-building my planes. In fact, I liked building them at least as much as I liked flying them. Around 1988 the RC world started seeing a real jet-engine compressor introduced into the hobby and unfortunately, I just started going through a divorce around then.
I wound up selling all my equipment and I never did reach my goal to build a 1/4-scale model. Since then, I've been married twice, (my 3rd wife died from cancer a few months ago), but I never stopped watching the great advances that are made in the RC aircraft world.
In 2010, I started getting into flight simulation for home PCs. Since I started that hobby, I've dropped at least $15K+ on high-res, 3rd party, flight sim scenery, mesh, aircraft, atmosphere, etc. In addition to that, I had to learn how to build and overclock my desktop computers so that they'd be able to keep up a decent frame rate.
I'm 63 and if I start back into RC, I know I'll be spending a bundle in a short period of time because I won't be able to resist building a 1/4 scale jet with all the 'trimmings' (flaps, lights, gear etc., etc.). BTW that big WW I German biplane, (I can't recall the name of that plane), was just beautiful!
In fact, I don't remember the name of the plane but I actually own it as a flight-sim model in the "Rise of Flight" flight-sim platform. My 'main' flight simulator platform is Microsoft FSX but I do own the ROF sim and I bought that model for ROF about a year ago.
I'll check out that website when I get a chance,

I am 77 and gegun RC flying in Germany 1963 after 18 month in the Luftwaffe.
Working in many countries worldwide I setteled in Ireland 1970, but continued my work in Ireland and other countries. after retierement 1998 I took a lat job in Shannghai for 5 years, but traveled twice a month home because my wife has MS and ...
RC flying never stopped and 2005 ten flyers spend 15 000 Dollar each to purchase 19 acre swomp and forrest. This was converted in a flying field. A short video is on my channel about this.

It became a active club with 10 owners and 30 members!

That's a big model plane and I always wondered what the scale of that model was. Is it a 1/12th scale? Probably not, I think it's maybe bigger than 1/12th... Maybe 1/5th scale? Those 4 engines at T/O sounded absolutely great and that landing was PERFECT!

PS One of my favorite jet RC models that always amazed me was the SR-72. If you browse for the SR-72 RC (I think it was 1/12th scale), and check it out, I think you'll like it. You probably already have seen it. However, the B29 still is one of my favorite RC's in prop-driven planes.
